  • Whenever I hear it start out with that dumb Moses Hogan chanting nonsense, I leave. That isn't how the song goes, nor is it good.

  • The sops do sound good, but tempo is too slow.

  • i love this version ... they made the soprano part look way easier than it is... trust i had to sing this in my choral group

  • @5irobot I had the freaking high part! Its so hard to sing and it takes so much energy! I know too its not an easy piece!

  • this is the best one i herd they are really good

  • One of the best performances of this song I've heard yet. I think the basses tried running away a bit in the beginning with the tempo.

Dynamics were pretty amazing here. There are some spots that could have still been worked out but they're not too bad. Very very nice

  • The chamber choir I'm in is going to sing that song! I cant wait!!

  • The basses at the beginning are way out of tune. and the vowels need real work because they are not consistent a but really great sound.

  • omg their wearing our outfit...that was fine,,,nead vowels....GO BOYTON high school yeay us

  • Probably second best version I've heard since Moses Hogan choir In my opinion.

Only notes I have, is everyone didn't seem to follow dynamic markings so well...

And it seems that EVERYONE messes the end of the song up which is the MOST POWERFUL moment of the entire song.

I'm not saying they didn't follow the markings well, it's more like... it wasn't dramatic... Like how Moses Hogan choir held some of the notes Longer. It just made everything sound even better.

  • Im going to sing this song in choir for the FALL CONCERT AT CY FALLS HIGH SCHOOL !!

im in LABAY middle school now in 7th grade.

  • Hmm, there were some shaky moments, but also some very choice moments. The sopranos nailed the high C, which that U of Utah competition choir everyone loves didn't, but then one of them passed the cutoff, lol. I'm also confused why the beginning wasn't very staccato...

  • I think being staccato would have made it more interesting but it was a good performance over all. I really liked it. I am singing this song in my choir this year and I am scared and also very excited. i hope we do a good job. Cutoffs are the hardest part to get, that and tuning.

  • I think it's more authentic as well.

    O. E. li-jah.

    *digs out the music*

Hey look at that! the music says staccato, marcatto.

It's not that bad if everyone learns their parts well. I was in an honors show choir in high school and we did this my senior year after seeing it performed by a college group. . . I should really post that recording on the tube.

Anyway, don't let your choir skip on the staccato, it's in Moses Hogan's arrangement, and break a leg!

  • too slow,it should be a little bit faster....

  • I agree, but I think it's better than being rushed.

  • WOW AMAZING, some places were funny but really good job.

  • Some tuing problems. Soloist on the end little out of tune. Very good job over all. Keep Singing

  • great song...my high school sung that song...great job

  • ugh im nervous im singin this song this year im tenor

  • it's not that bad.

  • .......wow is all i can say.......this is SO GOOD!!!!!! great job guys and girls, i know this song is hard as ever. we were going to do it in our choir but we didn't have enough people to do all the different solos and such and you couldn't hear all the parts that well

  • lol the recording lady laughed at the tenors high A

  • I think she jsut laughed because it was a funny series of words. They were calling satan names and then they said Halelujia Lord

  • That happens sometimes, it's an unexpected moment. I think if the audience laughs at that part, it means the tenors nailed it. :D

  • I love how they did this! i like the tempo they took it :)

  • ahh:) i love BYU-hawaii:)

  • REALLY GOOD

  • OMG!!!!!

we ended up preforming just after this group at this festival. and actually i think we did it the next year in Seattle!

  • my high school choir did this a few years back, i love this arrangement. You guys rocked it though!

  • dude im not used to this song being like this we do a simpler version since i guess we r in 6th grade... i think its better

  • Smoky Hill High School did it slow and it was amazing. this one is not slow at all

  • i love the tune to this song.....i heard for the first time when i went to my sisers concert n i was like bouncing in my seat

  • those tenors rock....... I should know I sing tenor...... awsome

  • lol they're not as good as they should be but still, tenors rock!

  • PS. and dont be fooled cause a lot of the choir are VETS. they tear this song apart!

  • ummmm this will get 3.5 stars from me. those sopranos were VERY shakey. and like one user said.... it has no emotion. if you wanna see the REAL Elijah Rock.... youtube Moses Hogans chorale sing it. now THATS 10 stars! and my high school choir performed this back in 99. we would have killed this choir in a competition lol

  • well, that soprano part is faaarrrr from easy.. that is a high A at the end of that ascending run. not easy to hit by any standards..

and these sopranos are really the only ones that i have seen on youtube (other than moses') that have hit it.

but yes, there certainly is no beating moses hogan. they destroy.

  • The University of Utah's clip of it certainly has the high notes.

  • its too slow for my taste, but other than that its good.

  • the ending was off but 4/5

  • This is absolutely amazing! I love you BYU! Cant wait to be part of you! haha! GREAT JOB!

  • you haven't heard anything until you hear SJSU's Concert Choir sing this. it's like when you hear something soooo amazing, that no matter what, you'll never hear anything as good. i WISH there was a youtube video of it, but i barely heard them sing it on friday, and it wasn't a school concert, it was an invitational Choral Festival, but wow. it was amazing.

  • wow these are the first people who match up to RHS very nice sopranos

  • hehe, tis the best ever! xD

  • I love this song. .they did a great job.. I heard it for the first time last week at a prayer conference.. amazing..

  • My choir was no where near as good as this when we sang this.

  • this was done very good but theres no feelings or emotions. i know how hard it is to put emotions into a song uve sung thousands of times but u still gotta do it! if u go type in my choir jlhs chamber choir ud see that we cant really do that ourselves! check out ukranian alleluia

  • So i have been listening to all of the choirs on you tube that sing Elijah Rock, and you sound perfect you should be proud and honored to sing in that choir

  • they did a good job!

  • I absolutely love this song! I also heard for the first time yesterday at a choir concert.

  • i heard this piece for the first time yesterday..& i loved it..

the soprano 1s are so controlled. very pretty first sopranos. & everyone else too

  • my M.S.N messenger is in my profile.

can you two pls stop arguing?? Thanks! oY

  • That was a decent performance. For the most part, the choir was together. I didn't like how the tenors swung "Elijah rock, oh, Elijah rock, Elijah." This will always be a show-stopping number.

  • that is soooo good!!!

  • Well Bass's need to work on the Jah Part of elijah in the begining girls Good! all of them need to bring in the cornner of thier mouths.

    1.AIR SUPPORT

the solo scared me a bit lol but good

    and Tenor's AWSOME!

    thats all lol

  • Wooow! I finally see a choir traling RIGHT behind the MoTab! I've heard the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on CD do this...and, I just can't believe how well this was done! The only real difference is that these voices are obviously much younger, but that's it!

Soprano descants & solo were RIGHT ON THE BALL!!!

The acoustic setting REALLY helped! That is always crutial to a choral performance!

I used to think BYU-I was the place to go, but if ppl r this good @ BYU-H maybe I'll be a Rainbow!

  • i flipping love this song! its awsome!

  • I love it!!!!

  • i meant 2:40

    haha

  • around 2:35 where the sopranos break off into a duet type of style..it gave me chills, i've never heard this part sung so well!

  • porterville high totally got a superior at the fresno state festival for this piece. it wasn't as hard as everyone said it would be. being a 1st tenor was the hardest part, let me tell you haha.

  • the highschool i will be attending in a few years sang this song at our last spring concert and they did outstanding!!!!

  • This is one of the most difficult choir pieces to sing. Anyone who can pull it off to make the audience not familiar with Moses Hogan's work is doing well. Ha.

  • GLORIUS!

  • Very good. im gonna say something, but only because i've heard this choir sing other songs and they are really good. This was a very good overall performance, but you all need to work on cut offs and entrances. The entrance at 2:18 was not all together. Then the cut off for the high sopranos at the end was off. The director cut you off and 2 of you didnt cut off quick enough. Great performance overall though, Basses were fantastic!

  • I was taught by same professor that Moses Hogan was taught by and all of Moses hogan styles and mine are simular. I think the choir did a great job but the beggining should start a little faster.

  • The tempo was iffy. Sometime's too fast; sometimes too slow. Check out UST's tempo. The girl solo near the end was okay.

  • UST tuning is iffy. UST's Altos push the choir sharp almost a full semi-tone.

  • In Spiritual, The tempo is not suppose to always be the same time.

  • Some are swinging and others aren't... Moses Hogan's choir did this stragith, not swung... it kind of detracts from the piece to swing it, methinks.... but still awesome for a HS choir.

  • Ur contraltos are abosolutely amazing ...the rest of the choir was ok too.

  • Hmm, the part where it's "Come on sister help me to pray, tell me my lord done passed this way," are the tenors singing that along with the altos?

  • I heard that too. What? the director didn't think altos could handle it? Us altos are strong. :)

  • Well, in my choir, a couple of the tenors sing that part along with the altos, But they only do it to be showing off, lol.

  • yall werent dat good...everglades legacy choir is better... yall cut offs were awful [[Legacy Choir]] in miramar florida is amazing

  • WOW ! the end was intensssssse ! i liked the pause right before "lord" wow it sounds so much better than just going straight to it . you guys are really good !

  • Good job, they performed well for a highschool chior. But the song is supposed to have a little more feeling in it. this could be because the dynamics weren't stressed. and I think there were too many sopranos on the high notes. There should only be maybe two.

  • How can you guys stand stock still while performing this?!

When I did this in district choir, the director told us to move with the music. It's so hard not to with a peice like this.

Other than that, pretty good jub. I agree with most of the other comments here, Sops too powerful, basses a little weak, but not bad overall.

  • Hey, our choir director has us standing still too. But I must admit, this song does make you wanna move.

  • i've never seen choral performance dresses like the ones the women were wearing...

pitch was great, but they need to round out their vowels...

  • ABSADAMLUTELY AMAZING!!!!!!!

  • im glad the sopranos could actually hit the high d, but the cut off after it was horrible

  • It was good. The sopranos were a little bit overpowering. The whole choir was too loud through out the whole thing. Needs to be faster and the tenors need to look when they come back in for the fast part.

  • The sopranos are way too overpowering. The poor altos are barely heard. And the basses sound flat. And where are they dynamics!? I heard a sforzando and like 2 accents. The rest is all fortississimo. My choir is doing this right now but we get 41 inutes every day to practice. Maybe that's why we're more clean cut. Who knows.

  • ladies slid up to the octave on the first page of the slow page after 1:37...

sopranos need to back off, and control

altos sound good when you can hear them, which is hardly ever.

men sound okay, they need more depth to their sound.

  • Hmm.. 3 of 6 stars .. Not very precise in their "entries", the tenors have a tendency of running. The sopranos are too dominating. Its almost like the whole piece is sung Forte Fortissimo ... No dynamics.

    Cheers

  • It wasn't bad, but then again not great. Some parts were shaky. Bad balanced the girls way over powered the guys. The guys struggled in a few places. But overall ok.

  • the basses need to breathe deeper and sing taller as they tend to become pitchless when they sing.

  • The soprano are overpowering the alto, mainly the second alto. I could barely hear the second alto at 1:36 - 2:10

  • As a choir singer.. The blend of the choir is a bit unbalanced. Work on your entrances, diction, and your vowels. It was a good try, but try a little harder next time.

  • The way they sing the song does not reflect the way it was suppose to sang... the word is SISTA and SISTER.. and places that they didnt need to hold the note they did.. change the whole meaning of the song

  • i am gonna record my school's version...it's like faster...haha

  • this performance lacked dynamics. their timing was off in some places. however, their notes are pretty good for the most part. I don't understand why there was a pause at the end and it would have been better if they put a crescendo on Lord.

  • AMAZING...love it.

  • luv this song but its so much better listenin 2 it in person

  • there was no energy or excitement in the performance. almost sounded boring.

  • o come on!!! there's no such thing as "sistER", i mean seriously... this is a black song, for god's sake puh-lease put the "er"s away... it sounds terrible... same thing with "lord", it's "laWD"... and put on a vowel, it's "rock el-AH jah", not "rock el-AI jah"... lastly, when getting to the end, needs more crescendo when blooming into that gimongous chord...

  • Very well done!

The ONLY thing I didn't like was the breath at the very end before "Up". I know some of the lower parts have been holding forever. It's just a phrasing thing.

    Still, awesome job.

  • Nice, gotta love Moses Hogan.
