Just read the review "Whatever happened to that fine old tradition of tarring and feathering?" and "The self-satisfied gurning seems to last for centuries" omg D:
@TheMegaAppleJuice I'm not surprised he wrote it, but the review was pretty accurate. He definitely has a few hilarious songs, but it's too often lost in crap - like this.
"The bards were feared. They were respected, but more than that, they were feared... If you pissed off some witch, then what's she gonna do? She's gonna put a curse on you....no big deal. You piss off a bard, and forget about putting a curse on you, he might put a satire on you... And if it's a particularly good bard, and he's written a particularly good satire, then even years after your dead, people are still gonna be laughing at what a twat you were."
Whenever I think of what my 'ex-best friend' and all her little cock sucking bitches did to me and said about me behind my back, I watch this video and makes me feel a little bit better. I suck at writing songs, so this one does the trick.

I read the review, since going into this I didn't know who Phil Dauoust was. Phil had this coming to him...I hope it was cathartic for Minchin, as well, LOL!
I actually read this review by Daoust, and honestly it's one of the most stupid & ignorant things I've ever read in my life... He is so unbelievably wrong about - well - everything, it almost hurts. Tim, you're the one!
@Keytaster I know, i looked it up last night after listening to this, and I was like wow, this guy is chatting pure bollocks...lol. It's like he assumes that only HIS idea of entertainment is worth watching by everybody, what a cunt, thats all im saying about him, lol.
@HaistaPaska92 If you add the alphabetical positions of O, C & D together, you get 22. Which is a palindrome, and twice the value of the 5th prime...*and* the number of negative comments in this thread!
"but i still wanna cut big chunks of flesh out of your stupid face, and make your children watch while i force you to eat them, yeah i wanna make you children watch you eat your own face meeeeeeeaaat!" like if there is someone you want to do that to...
Wooohooo! 'Tis true - I read the thing Phil Daoust wrote and it's absolute shite. Clearly he was just a bitter, closed-minded man when he saw Minchin perform. Just sayin'.
When you type "phil daoust" into google, the top hits are "phil daoust", "phil daoust review tim minchin", "phil daoust song" and "phil daoust tim minchin". I bet he regrets that review now...
Is it just me, or did nobody else understand '...and I know that you're a smart man, and with such a fine mind it has to be hard to resist narcissistic intellectual tantrums in the supermarket aisles of your self-regard'? I mean, first of all, tantrums tend to be narcissistic, and since he is already in the aisles of his won self-regard 'narcissistic' is doubly redundant. Secondly, why would he throw tantrums in the aisles which are his own? Who is holding him back? Morality?
Knowledge of his own fallability and imperfection? If so, Tim is describing the human condition, rather than that of Doust, since I find it likely that all of us share the desire to regard ourselves in increasingly favorable light, but are checked in place by our knowledge of how obnoxious people who do tend to be (and how little friends they have), as well as the awareness of our own imperfection.
'...watch out, because I’m better at that job. I’ve stopped playing it. I should stress it’s about how pathetic and hyper-sensitive artists are. The contentious bit is I used his real name. If you call for a comedian to be tarred and feathered in a newspaper in the first year of their career, I don’t feel guilty.'
So yeah, I think we can all think about a person we would direct thing song too haha!
Tim Minchin was asked why he wrote this song in the Metro, November 2011- 'I wrote it two years after the review appeared because it had comic potential. It’s over the top and hysterical. The review really upset me at the time because it was my first year of doing comedy and this guy really went to town. I’ve since discovered he’s one of those journos who tries to be witty and clever at the cost of people. If you try to be witty and clever by being scathing and mean about a comic...'
Tim can be really hard to read sometimes. The intro sounds so honest, but then he launches into a song that is either painfully harsh or hyperbole. If the lyrics really are how Tim feels, this is disturbing and very sad. If this is mostly hyperbole, it is merely disturbing.
@andy4an If you don't like harsh shit you probably shouldn't watch any more Tim Minchin. His whole act is about taking the piss out of everything. Haven't read Phil Daoust's review, but it may have been brutal. Some "reviewers" have the tact and grace of youtube commenters. Just ripping people to shreds for no other reason than "it really feels good to destroy someone, tiihii." If Tim vents that shit through song.. Fine by me.
@ronnysoeberg "Strip away Minchin's fretful porpentine hair, white piano and willingness to fall off the stage for a laugh, and you're left with a bog-standard stand-up with a silly voice and a few good songs, most of whose material would have seemed dated in the last millennium.... Whatever happened to that fine old tradition of tarring and feathering?"
-Phil Daoust, The Guardian 2005. Editted for length.
@bareakon WTF, he doesn't even make sense! "...would have seemed dated...." Then "What ever happened to that fine old tradition...." WHAT????? Phil Daoust is just jelly.
@bareakon Hehe, thanks for posting :) I guess I can see why he'd take offense to that. Most reviewers have no idea what it's like to be onstage. Have to take their reviews for what they are. Opinions made by people with little insight into what they're writing about. Much of the time the reviewers aren't even proper reviewers. You see the same with photographers at concerts. Just some news paper dude been given a camera by the editor. "go.. do an article on whatever this band is.."
I love many of his song. I am ambivalent about many of them. And I dislike two (the other one made a joke about child sex slavery). If he ever came to my city I would jump at the chance to hear him live. Do you think I got my first exposure to Tim though this song? In fact, I found this one while engaging in a brute force search of his work because I wanted to hear everything.
/rant
But yeah, this kind of song makes me wonder if I should stop listening to him.
Of course. Irony simply means it happens in a different way than expected. We thought we were getting a heat forgiveness song, but what actually happened was quite disturbing. The irony increases the shock value to be sure, but even if you ignore that part of the intro, this is quite a severe response to a very mean review (thanks for posting it whoever that was).
Humans are a product of their DNA (no control) and their experiences. There is nothing of value here.
@andy4an No no, what I mean is, it's ironic in that he's singing all these horrible things in the song, but he doesn't actually mean them. He's not being serious; it's meant to be taken as irony.
"I've written you this special song, to show how far I've come along in my efforts to be more mature in the face of negative feedback."
Obviously he doesn't think it's mature; he's joking.
Even if I grant you that he is 100% kidding (and I don't), I contend that "I want to cut chunks out of your face and make your children watch as I force you to eat them" and "I hope one of your family members dies" are disturbing. I don't ever want to be so jaded that this doesn't phase me.
@andy4an He doesn't actually mean it you know. The whole reason he wrote this is because Phil Daoust is, and I quote Tim on this, "One of those journos who tries to be witty and clever at the cost of people. If you try to be witty and clever by being scathing and mean about a comic..."
The end of the song stands as proof that he's joking, because he says he's more mature and can take criticism, then ends it with "you fucking pooface"
It's all in good fun, seriously, learn to smile a little.
@RidersWhoRide because he's brilliant, hilarious and actually seems like quite a nice person. guessing he doesn't ACTUALLY want to force phil's children to watch their dad eat his own face meat. what with being a "comedian" i imagine it is a "joke"
@sidisnanners ...I have since seen more of his stuff and have seen the real tim behind the stage persona, and yeah, I was probably being a closed minded dick... all I had seen was this, pope song, and ten foot cock and he came accross as a rude twat but I have more recently opened my eyes to the rest of his stuff+ interviews, and yeah... i think i got th wrong impression...
@RidersWhoRide It took 5 hours for your revelation to occur??? This is just proof that Tim is awesome... too turn someone from being AWESOME to AWESOMER XD
@izzyGO52 yup... haha, i saw one thing, then sometime in the day I saw a good vid, and it inspired me to look at more stuff, and i went a bit crazy... haha am slowly working my way through all of the vids...:\ haha
@RidersWhoRide Tim's good XD i like him mainly cause he's funny and is a good singer and writes really meaningful and logical stuff... i'm not completely Atheist but i definitely don't believe in Religion XD if i were to, it would definitely be Buddhism :) Are you religious???
@izzyGO52 yeah, I'm a christian, but I still love this guy and though it pains me to admit it, he makes some pretty good, thought provoking points...:\
@RidersWhoRide lol not everything in the bible is wrong, in my opinion, and some things it preaches is seriously how we should all act :) i hope i'm not offending you :/ lol :D TIM FTW ~ Rhymes XD
@RidersWhoRide that's fair, he does make some rather provocative comments haha. which naturally only makes me love him more.. i met him in june and, granted, we only chatted for about five minutes, but he was a total sweetheart. : D glad you are liking his work more now!.
(A good rule is to never piss off a comedian OR a musician. The former will make you a punchline, and the latter will write a song to deride you. Tim is both. Phil Daoust clearly lacks critical reasoning skills :P )
@MorbidlyObesePenguin True! All you have to do is remember all the vowels in order, stick them between D and st, and then remember to remove the e and the i. Simple!
(I'm not actually being facetious, though it sounds that way.)
so yh just looked up a load of other reveiws on tim and there all really positive for him, mhmm wonder why, apart from him being an all time legend of course
The self-satisfied gurning seems to last for centuries. Then Minchin makes the unilateral decision to give us an encore, the last thing you need in a festival where acts stack up in the wings like jets over an airport. He even congratulates himself for keeping the next performers waiting. Whatever happened to that fine old tradition of tarring and feathering?
@ShayTims1995 on mine Daoust it comes up with douse. But oh well your iPhone must be pretty weird! Also Phil has made 2 more accounts since you posted that...
i was going to complain about how he shouldn't rhyme with words, especially in the chorus (not things like "ding dang dong")
but then he said "pooface" and all was forgiven.

@RidersWhoRide Tim's good XD i like him mainly cause he's funny and is a good singer and writes really meaningful and logical stuff... i'm not completely Atheist but i definitely don't believe in Religion XD if i were to, it would definitely be Buddhism :) Are you religious???
izzyGO52 3 months ago
@izzyGO52 yeah, I'm a christian, but I still love this guy and though it pains me to admit it, he makes some pretty good, thought provoking points...:\

@RidersWhoRide that's fair, he does make some rather provocative comments haha. which naturally only makes me love him more.. i met him in june and, granted, we only chatted for about five minutes, but he was a total sweetheart. : D glad you are liking his work more now!.

Tim Minchin - You either love him or you're Phil Daoust :)

What was the piece he mentions in the beginning? (around 0:05) "extraordinary piece"
worldunturning 3 months ago
It's a good thing Phil is a journaloust, or this song would have been very hard to write.

Lols, I thought the 'pooface' comment was referring to the glitchy stuff stuck on him in the first few seconds.

Fucking brilliant, such an amazing comedian and musician. Slightly under-appreciated even.
LeDeliciousBread 3 months ago
I love Tim...
(A good rule is to never piss off a comedian OR a musician. The former will make you a punchline, and the latter will write a song to deride you. Tim is both. Phil Daoust clearly lacks critical reasoning skills :P )

Yeahhh I wanna make your children watch you eat your own face meat...
gymnutter89 3 months ago
the 15 dislikes must be from Phil Daoust.
evilsam227 3 months ago 6
I find it fairly sad that even though his name is in the title, most people fail to spell "Phil Daoust" correctly...
MorbidlyObesePenguin 4 months ago
@MorbidlyObesePenguin True! All you have to do is remember all the vowels in order, stick them between D and st, and then remember to remove the e and the i. Simple!
(I'm not actually being facetious, though it sounds that way.)
queensugirl10 3 months ago
Am I the only one who googled this guy afterwards?
kazkanata 4 months ago 2
It's amazing how many comments contain misspellings of 'Daoust'. I know it's a difficult name to spell, but it says it right in the title.

lukela1993 4 months ago 4
part of the review:
The self-satisfied gurning seems to last for centuries. Then Minchin makes the unilateral decision to give us an encore, the last thing you need in a festival where acts stack up in the wings like jets over an airport. He even congratulates himself for keeping the next performers waiting. Whatever happened to that fine old tradition of tarring and feathering?
phil daoust- you fucking cunt!!!
lukela1993 4 months ago
@ShayTims1995 on mine Daoust it comes up with douse. But oh well your iPhone must be pretty weird! Also Phil has made 2 more accounts since you posted that...
