  • I hate it when young people say I hate classic music, even when they don't even know it..

  • @NadiaLodewijk There is so much more to classical music then what's popular today. There's so much more hidden in the notes in classical music. And even though we're the "minorities", I'm glad I can be a part of classical music, to be able to understand it.

  • @mario91551 You're so right. The problem is that there is no good or wrong music, everyone likes the music he/she likes.. But I think it's totally wrong to judge about music (like classic) you do not even know.. S:

  • Her playing is so beautiful, so clean and pure! She is probably my favorite violinist to listen to..the way she plays the beginning of this piece is absolutely hypnotizing. No extra movements, no show, just genuine involvement in the music, which is what makes her such a natural performer. Exquisite technique, and such a sweet sound. Beautiful!!!

  • I think I saw Benjamin Franklin on Timpani

  • she is so incredible, even at this age! she looks so young, maybe 15, it's amazing!

  • Wonderful !!!

  • Simply amazing

  • 59 people have no taste in music.

  • @amagos18 60

  • hei guys,she is perfect player,so young...

  • Great, but what a pity of the lousy compression.

  • I just played the backup violin 2 for this song and our violin soloist was Dustin Wilkes-Kim who is 15 and dang this girl can play!!!!!

  • Why does Lady Gaga get more plays than this???

  • @fiddlestar3 Yes you can really wonder. Where is class, where is style, where is musical competence. All, that makes music something very special has for so many years been distroyed, by Pop artists.

  • @fiddlestar3 It is sad, but I would prefer people listening to her than some other artists. At least she went to Julliard on voice and piano while others didn't even attend college.

  • @fiddlestar3 a matter of taste i guess. Jedem es Seine...

  • @fiddlestar3 that lady gaga fuck to your mother a later upload the video to youtube ;)

  • Does anyone know what stage this is?

  • @DalViolin2014 Münchner Philharmonie, Germany

  • Wonder how old Hilary Hahn was here, she looks about 16 to me at the time of this recording, anyone know for sure ? She was a fine Violinist even at this young age.

  • she is not a queen of emotion - why bother recording this when Oistrakh and Haedal have done so much better?

  • Comment removed

  • she has a subtle passion that shows itself if you listen

  • @Imbetterthanmost listen to Oistrakh again

  • (he is on a different level)

  • @Sim882 I just think people are way to visual. If you truly listened to this piece you would hear the minute differences that make it so special.

  • @Imbetterthanmost i will give it ago - but i'm not influenced by visuals. janine jansen displays a lot of facial emotion but none in her playing for example. Hahn is obviously more emotional in playing than her. I just think Oistrakh owns this piece (as he does most of them)

  • I know she is lacking a little bit of phrasing, but to be honest if I was that young playing Sibelius my nerves would take over some of my phrasing! lol Good job overall though.

  • As much as I like this work, my favorite part is the orchestral part starting at 6:00 and especially the part for bass at 7:10 -- I mean damn what power in a few simple phrases.

  • @TheDystopiaInside Sweety, those aint basses you know -.-'

I really like basses, and I totally agree that they sound beautiful, but still, I can't help but feel insulted by being thought of as a bassist. That beautiful (xD) Instrument you hear there is a Cello <3

  • @TheRosan49 I meant bass as a general register, in that part there are several instruments playing, although emphasis is on the cellos.

  • @seltzerization i agree about sarah but not hilary. hilary is wayy above sarah

  • Her phrasing is amazing, every time I heard about her music i always astouned by the sound quality. Sometimes I cant actually believe that the sound is played by human being. Absolutely beautiful...

  • must be my fav. piece, and played amazingly by, must be my fav. young violinist...one of the few with "the voice" imo...tanx to uploader...:-)

  • Hillary hahn is a classical example of a musician that has a silent passion. She may not show it, but every step of the way through this concerto she is analyzing, and contemplating every little note in hopes that it be unique and beautiful.

  • Good, but lack of phrasing is kind of leaving me feeling like gasping...

  • I don't have time to read all the comments so forgive me if I am uninformed. However, I don't mind saying that if there are those who are knowledgeable regarding music who take exception to this performance then fine. However, anyone who just summarily gives this a thumbs down because they 'don't like classical music' is an idiot. For the life of me, I can't imagine what there is to not like about this beautiful music.

  • In my opinion this concerto should be more dramatic! She plays it a little less dramatic...

  • Not bad, but even Jascha's better! ;-)

  • That chick has skills. Wow.

  • @seltzerization that is the biggest bullshit I have ever heard..

  • Hilary Hahn (along with Sarah Chang and co.) will always be a symbol of everything that went wrong with classical music in the 90s - they shamelessly sold out, and this pushed classical music into further irrelevance. Even pop music has more integrity now.

  • @seltzerization Care to elaborate on that one? Don't all musicians have to "sell out" in order to make money?

  • @seltzerization how is mastering an art and performing it selling out?

  • @phlexonance aah - sorry. i don't mean hilary hahn sold out. the classical music industry did. the 90s saw a dramatic shift towards marketing child prodigies and pretty faces, in a cynical response to a decline in classical music sales. hilary hahn has great technique, but she employs pretty stock interpretations and lacks original phrasing skills. she was very good FOR HER AGE - a master (even now), def. not. if you're gaga about prodigy, sure. but a lot of us just care about the music.

  • @seltzerization ah ok, I get what you mean

I got that impression from Vanessa Mae and David Garret but didn't connect it to Hilary Hahn since she doesn't do flashy performances but seems to go a rather conventional road

  • @seltzerization I agree on romantic and classical concertos, but Hilary Hahn Bach is unique, and her modern concerti are refreshingly precise in both technique and interpretation. I respectfully disagree on this regard, but I do agree in terms of the "standards" she plays. They're fine and they fit right in with every other great violinist--but they do just that. They don't stand out to me in any way.

  • @seltzerization I agree in part. Hilary Hahn plays beautifully but often doesn't have much to say (musical interpretation), just like Midori Goto, in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with either of their playing; they play everything on the page, not a single note missed. However, they don't really take it far off of the page.

  • @empoleon9999 She's playing this well at this age, so I imagine she'll become more expressive with more life experience.

  • @empoleon9999 I agree with neither you or seltzer. I think—if one attended any of Hahn's recent concerts, they'd be hard-pressed to deny how far she pushes the music off the page. It's true that she was, and is, a young and beautiful woman, but it's absurd to dismiss her work because of this. I wonder if you've heard her recently? Also, I think that neither her recording of Schoenberg, or her current project with contemporary composers can be considered the work of a wind-up pretty face. IMHO.

  • 4;25 makes me melt every time.

  • so is this Violin Concerto, Op. 47: in D minor? im really confused

  • @thekingmoss yes. the one and only. ;)

  • 5:50 <3

  • This piece and performance is just too incredible!

  • i'm a huge huge fan. i absolutely love how she's so poised while keeping all the intensity flowing through her fingers. and technically, she OWNS. and she was young when she played this. insane much?

  • nice one. Hilary shows her best. Of course, I prefer much more "powerful" interpretations, but this is also very good. I remember one my coursemate, she was playing the same concerto, and she told me: "Each time I start playing it, I'm thinking myself "I'm a man, I'm a man.......". Weird, but she played it really powerfully. Oh music! What are you doing to poor girls!

  • that chick is a beast

  • Erratum: the Oistrakh perfomance I refer to was not with Kondrashin, but with Gennady Rozhdestvensky conducting.

  • Technically fine playing, but in a held-back, over-refined, too lady-like a manner not appropriate for this work. To be convincing and not merely impressive in this concerto, it appears this rather cool and over-confident young lady needs some years of raw and real living such as Ida Haendel and Ginette Neveu had had at similar stages of their careers. As--to stop comparing ladies--Oistrakh's breath-taking performance with Kondrashin and the Moscow Radio Orchestra also grandly exemplifies.

  • 49 people have no clue...

  • What an incredibly ethereal piece of music played by such a consummate violinist!!

What a talented composer! An incredible combination of composer, orchestra and soloist! Classical music - a great redeeming feature in a world of turmoil!

    Harry E W Smith, E.D., A.D.M.

  • this is so good it's killing me

  • Beautiful, and she was only 15!!! WOW!

  • i just want to close my eyes and sleep with this beatiful song.

    amazing

  • amazing finger

  • How old was she then?

  • which year did this year take place?

  • How old is this girl?

  • Nice one Hilary!

  • Hahn has very long fingers, esp. the third and fourth!

  • @mizzothify how do you think they grew so long?????? :O

  • @MrPawelLisowski

Simple genetics, probably? But of course it serves her playing (fingered octaves, chord playing, vibrato with the fourth finger etc.)

  • I've never noticed her hand span.

  • A great presentation by Hilary Hahn, welldone

  • What does "alot" mean?? It's not in any dictionary I've seen.

  • how old was she when she played this?

  • Oh. There is ALWAYS that one clarinet who plays too musically. :)

  • @gottagowitdaflo we clarinetists are a melodramatic bunch. ;)

    How old is Hahn here?

Also in response to all the noise about her being a symbol for "everything that went wrong with classical music in the 90s": let's all move forward maybe? We need to spend less time griping about former glories/the blame game and try to enthuse young people, entice them into the concert halls. I want everyone to be as thrilled by classical music as I am: how can we do that? Surely not by griping.

  • hilary han d job is what they should call her cause she whacks off as a person. respect your fans hilary or don't offer to sign autographps. be real or go home

  • I MET HER

  • @TheSaxyBandGeek good for you do you want a prize?

  • Thats a really pure violin sound, so relaxing to listen to.

  • Do you feel the icy chills crawling up your spine?

  • @Jadeismycolor

no i feel the spoiled brat crawling up my ass

  • @claytondolive

    haha

  • People criticize rather extraordinary violinists, like Hahn, because she has been asked to play this and many concertos by many orchestras around the entire world; whereas, those who sit down and try and talk badly about someone probably does not have much going for them.

As a side note, I love her double stops on that one part at around 3:30. It makes me feel like- just I dunno.. it sounds brilliant, and it's really haunting.

  • uummmmm i honestly think hilary hahn kicks butt in this and everything else she plays because she plays so cleanly and beautiful that it sounds like a recording....but honestly if there're haters, i think they're entitled to their opinions without people bashing them for that. i read alot of the comments and i'm wondering what's with people being downright assholes to people who didn't like this version of hilary hahn's sibelius....? people need to take chill pills.

  • She plays with a beauty that matches both that of the concerto and the artist.

  • With people like Hahn around, the classical music world has a good future.

  • @freecheesepizza - you realize, don't you, that you have a tin ear, and are devoid of all judgement and taste? Tell me, does your mother call your father 'dad'? Why don't you go take some music courses, and get lost. You are a fool.

  • @7777Scion , relax. Over-criticism is usually just a way some people have of trying to sound all-knowing. The guy has a little knowledge of classical music and is acting like a know it all, self righteous idiot. That's all. If you enoyed this video, that's all that matters.

P.S. I mean over criticism of things that are good in the first place. I don't see anything wrong with voicing your dislike of things that are unquestionably BAD.

  • Her interpretation is actually very good for modern work like this actually.

  • Kamio is better...

  • her technique is sooo perfect!

  • If you don't like her interpretation, it's okay, I'm fine with that. But I hate to see people saying like her playing is horrible and you can't listen to it. This cannot be true! You can't deny that she hit every note and just because of that she HAS to be a good violinist! It's okay when you like another interpretation better and it's okay that I reaally like this one!

  • She'd get it. What's a sibelius?

  • I have a Hillary Hahn-signed copy of the first page of the score on the wall behind me right now!!! I love her and this piece!

  • I think the conductor is giving the orchestra the inner beats(the quarter notes).

  • lol...what is the conductor doing at 4:30?

I love Hilary! Makes me want to practice!!

  • Unless I am very much mistaken, the performance dates from 1955, Hilary's international début in Munich, Germany, at the age of 15.

Lorin Maazel and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

    Go Hilary <3

  • @giammira My bad: I meant 19*9*5 (@_@)

Check her out on Wikipedia for information on her debut(s) Sorry, I can't post links here.

    Well spotted ;-)

  • @youtubister @youtubister I love this bit and others, my elder brother played it all the time when I was a kid. I am no expert. however I wonder: are you sure it is so dated back to 1955? 1955?!! It would be already old enough if it was 1985. I mean, back then there was hardly the TV colour, I think there wasn't at all as a matter of fact, and look at the definition, it's even a sharp one.. . And the lady, Hillary, how old is she? I am no expert but yes I think you're...very much mistaken...

  • @youtubister it's 1995, not 1955!! ;)

  • @youtubister you're probably right, but i swear that looks like the gewandhaus

  • @sockmaister

It was (just) an educated guess based upon the information I could find on the net.

  • @freecheesepizza

Dude. No one is listening to you. I don't get what point you're trying to make- you're just ridiculous and full of BS. Proof of your stupidity?

Everyone flagged your comments as either spam or removed whatever you said. So shut up. No one's listening to you. Get a life bro, seriously. Listen to the music and if you're gonna hate, go hate some place else.

  • @freecheesepizza

I listen to youngsters all the time. I live in a very competitive city-I know what's out there. I don't think you know what you're talking about. Stop bashing artists who don't suit your taste. When you really know how to play the violin well, then you will start respecting these concert artists. You still have a long way to go. Good luck to you....

  • Comment removed

  • @freecheesepizza - 1) you need to calm down. Instead of getting your frustration out on people from Youtube. You need to seek for professional help. 2)Why are you talking about college graduates now? I thought we're talking about only on 16 years old teens?! I have heard fantasitic young players all the time. 3) I said concert artiststs have extra something in PLAYING than most people. 4)There's always a place for every violinist especially the ones with good attitute.

  • @violindr ... uh... maybe you need to calm down, lol. all i did was call you out on your BS - something that you didn't technically deny, lol. your comments seem to reveal further that you don't understand that Juilliard, Curtis, CCM and Indiana have pre-college programs that nurture future violin stars - not just college graduates. if you didn't know this (and apparently you don't), then you REALLY don't know what yo'ure talking about at all.

  • @freecheesepizza - I've heard a lot of kids from Juliard & Curtis pre-college program, many of them are fantastic, but not quite in the same category with Hilary yet at that age. You're the one that's BS & not in reality. That's too bad you just can't hear the difference between concert artists & very talented students' playing. You have a long long long way to grow. Good luck to you! I really don't care about your inmature comments. You should move on with your life now or see a specialist.

  • @violindr - yeah, good save. ;) now that i told you that a Juilliard (not "Juliard") pre-college program exists, you now say that you've heard of it, and you've heard violinists from the program. *wink*

  • Those who criticise usually can't themselves :) Criticising is easy. I myself enjoy the old masters but know better than to start comparing.

You who have money and looks on your mind, shut up for a second, listen to someone other then yourself for a second and you might even learn something about music. I haven't yet heard a violin that playes itself no matter how good or expensive.

"No statue has ever been raised to a critic." - Sibelius

  • Comment removed

  • @freecheesepizza you're absolutely right that great violinists know the value of critisicism and also know to direct it invard to themselves and not to others so openly at least. I haven't played a strad or vuillaume before and haven't even mentioned them so I don't see youre problem with my comment. Still even with these violins of greatest reputation they don't make a sound without a player. Have you really a different observation?

  • Comment removed

  • @freecheesepizza - you know i missed you're point quite intentionally. Through my studies I got so used to people whining about other players advantages and shortly did it myself until realizing you make youre own way and try to be happy.. even for those who are more fortunate. Hilary does earn all she has and is the only violinist of our generation that has without me knowing the performer beforehand surprised me positively time and again with great recordings.

  • @lmilehto - look, i agree with you that for students to complain about other student's advantages is a bad idea. it gets students to blame their problems on things that are out of their control, and this makes them less motivated to improve. i TOTALLY agree with you there. However, this doesn't preclude the fact that the classical music industry uses "marketability" as a significant factor in determining who it puts on its labels. This is a fact about the market.

  • @centerbark That said, the '98 artist formerly known as 'Nigel' was a WORLD away from the old carbon copy articulation/RH of the old man. I love you so much Nige. Please. ps. your dry tone is loveable. xxxx

  • Nothing to be desired.

  • 2:40

    Insane violin O.o

  • 6:58!!! XD

  • Merci papa :-)

  • I agree that Hahn is an exceptional concert violinist, but for this concerto, Perlman and Ferras will always be the best.

  • @Musiclver27 ...and Kulenkampf...and Menuhin...and Hahn.

  • Hilary is a top-notched concert artist. It is not fair to compare her with other artists. Let's not forget that she was only 16 years old here! Could you play as well as her when you were 16? I heard her again about 3 or 4 years ago in Disney Hall playing with the LA philharmonic. She was fantastic! A lot of performances have to be seen & heard in person to appreciate. I wish people are more open minded. Stop criticizing artists when they're not playing in the style you wish to hear.

  • Comment removed

  • @freecheesepizza - I think there is definitely someone out there almost as good as Hilary at age 16. But please keep in mind that what makes someone "artist" level is that this artist has something most people don't have. Not just a pretty face too. Every artist is different, that's why it makes music even more fun to listen to. Stop critizing the artist who's not your cup of tea, learn to be open minded, you will learn much more about the art of violin playing!

  • Comment removed

  • hilary was excellent and no doubt she is wonderful as a violinist, indeed.

but ultimately, it's not fair to compare it to someone as ferras or kavakos...

  • Comment removed

  • Ferras' version is miles ahead. She plays as if she was struggling with this piece, no lightness, it's flat, she's sometimes behind the orchestra. Ferras is the master.

  • すごく上手です。 所々軽く弾いてて、ふわふわする感じる部分がありますね・・・

  • People who aren't satisfied with this recording, I apologize that Hilary doesn't use your personal interpretations...oh wait...i'm sorry she's the one people are paying money to see in concert and hear in recordings. She is the one who is asked by all these orchestras to play concerti with them. Just because the interpretation that emerges isn't what you expected it to be doesn't make it bad...her interpretations of music are wonderful and posses their own beauty, as do all interpretations.

  • @edoniw123 not all interpretations are beautiful. that's like saying all music is good... but this interpretation is definetly good, i concur.

  • @edoniw123

are you saying that mainstream success reflects true artistic beauty?

  • @nolie94 not in most cases. But regarding Hilary Hahn, I would say yes. She is an undeniably talented musician and performer, and the fact that she enjoys such success is, I believe a testament to her how beautiful her interpretations really are.

  • @edoniw123 wow tell that to judges.

  • @edoniw123 ACTUALLY, some interpretations posses no beauty cos they're rubbish cos everyone who likes them is not an advanced thinker. And for all you know, all those people who ask Hilary Hahn to play for them could be NON-advanced thinkers. Yeah, didn't think of that did ya.

  • @Bushy162 first of all my friend, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. what is your definition of an advanced thinker?? one who condemns great works of art through a key board while the REAL artist is onstage playing one of the most difficult concerti written for violin? Lets see a video of you playing this this flawlessly at age 15...and secondly, hilary hahn is asked to play with the leading orchestras in the world: Berlin and New York Philharmonics to name a couple...

  • @Bushy162 so apparently, the world's greatest orchestras, leading paragons to the classical community, are made up of non-advanced thinkers...you make so much sense...

  • @edoniw123 The music industry is a strange thing. Often it is the nutters who ask people like hilary hahn to come and play concerti with them. I'm not saying hilary hahn is a bad choice, NOOOOO no, hilary hahn is pretty darn good. BUT, to say that someone's opinion that she is rubbish is invalid purely because there's no such THING as rubbish is absurd.

  • @Bushy162 ok now i understand your point lol.. When I made that statement, i was meaning to say that Hahn's interpretation of sibelius is NOT rubbish simply becuase its different from what is traditionally done.

  • @edoniw123 oh, ha, ok, well then we are agreed :) Yeah, i agree with you about that.. Anything else we can argue about ha :P ?

  • @Bushy162 just curious, do you also play violin??

  • @edoniw123 yeah i do yeah, not so much now but i've been learning most of my life and i'm 17 now :D What about yourself edoniw??

  • @Bushy162 Yes i also play haha. I'm actually also turning 17 in July and i'm entering a double-degree program in violin performance and biology next year =)

  • @edoniw123 THAT IS SO WEIRD. I'm doing violin performance and biology.

  • I think that it's too subdued as a whole, even on the orchestra's end.

  • Of course I meat that I've played it. It's not american, I was making a direct translation.

  • Several commentaries seem to me arrogant. The effort of the girl combined with Sibelius composition it obtains a wonderful effect — Varios comentarios me parecen un tanto ridículos y petulantes. El esfuerzo de la niña combinado con la composición de Sibelius, logran un resultado maravilloso

  • Of course I haven't heard hundreds of recordings, it's just a form of expression. Now there is a way of classical musicians to speak? Grow up.. Eventually you'll learn that there are no "classical" musicians. There are musicians, people who make music. Labeling musicians with classical or jazz or rock is stupid. A musician is, most of all, an humble person, and I clearly see that you are not. By the way, where I come from we say "I've played this concert". This piece is a concert, isn't it?

  • Comment removed

  • @CClefAzores I understand what you are saying. I agree that music is music, and the more people learn about it, the more they understand that.

  • ZOMG so in tune!

  • Magnifique...

  • Here you have it; This is as clean-cut and true as it gets. Brava Hilary!

  • i found the music for this piece and it looks so much harder than it sounds, and it sounds hard enough.. haha.. :/
