I had the same issue on the exact same model motor. On the left side of the motor is the carb. The 2 nuts to the left of the choke knob hold the plastic shroud on as well as the carb. Behind that plastic is a vacuum line (maybe 1/4 ID) that connects to the plastic shroud just behind the shroud. Check that out... PM me if you need more info
Did you ever find out the solution to the surging problem on the MTD OHV 179cc? My mom has a snow blower with the same engine which has the same problem. Its a huge bummer because this is only the second season. Hopefully I can get it fixed!
@jsm99 I don't know if he did or not, but I know that when an engine surges, or hunts, it's because of a fault in the fuel system. Usually it means that when the engine is running at "normal speed" the mixture is too lean, and the engine stalls - the governor compensates for this and opens the butterfly which increases airflow and fuel gets through, so the engine speeds up - the governor comes in again and slows the engine and it begins to stall and the"cycle" repeats, hope that helps :]
I have gotten my machine back from Sears. They said it was a carburetor problem. I tested the machine and now it runs good. Check the carburetor and the governor. Either might be the culprit.
I have a Sears 88780 single stage snowblower with the same engine and it also surges. I did contact Sears and they told me to bring the machine in for servicing under warranty. In the meantime, I have brought the machine in for servicing. They'll hopefully take care of the problem and they'll be looking over the rest of the machine. I'll report back once I get my machine back from Sears service.
i had a Troy built snow blower with this motor. did the same crap. i returned it and got a MTD which looks exactly like the troy built i just returned, If this piece of shit doesent run im complaining to the company. YOUR NOT THE ONLY ONE man, i have the same issue!!!
Its not a briggs like xxtruckin93xx said. Its a Chinese engine. MTD uses them on all there new snow throwers now. The problem is that the carbs are made to run VERY lean to meet emissions standards. There is a little plastic plug that is under the idle adjustment screw it needs to be cleaned out with a peace of wire or a cable from a bicycle. You need to unwind the cable so you have just the strands. then just run it through the little ports. That plastic plug is part of the idle circuit.
@Applegonebad You can open up the main jet (the main jet is what holds the bowl on the carb) or you can open up the idle circuit by opening up the little brass insert inside the plastic plug. If that engine were to have actual fuel mixture adjustments the plastic plug would be your low end adjustment and the bottom jet would be your high speed adjustment. You would need a set of very fine drill bits wich are not cheap. Just try to open up the brass insert with a peace of fine steel wire.
@Applegonebad Part 2 once you do that your surging problem will go away. If you ever do plan to use this engine as a mini bike or a gokart engine just know that the connecting rods on these engines are very weak and they break at the wrist pin. You could use it but don't rev the shit out of it.
@Applegonebad part 3 I messed up the high speed jet is inside the carb its actually just under the base of the orifice tube you can take it out with a flat head screw driver and then the orifice tube will come out with a couple of god hits on a soft surface

bet the carb bowl was full of old gas that had probably congealed over the winter , the jelly then keeps the bowl float from floating freely,

Always a good idea to buy a service agreement.
