  • 60's radicals as all communists, live in a dream world and if that dream doesnt conform to reality , the killing and murder begins, vietnam was less an unju8st war than an idea lodged in the heads of deluded hedonists

  • Such deceit. Most 60s liberals back then were VERY sympathetic to both the Black Panthers and the Communists. Doesn't sound as cool NOW as it did THEN, but believe me, that's how it was and people like Ehrenreich are downplaying this connection for just this reason. When I turned 18 my father, a marxist historian, talked me out of joining the communist party usa because, he said, it wouldn't do me or the cause any good. In other words, you'll get more done, sympathies in tact, inside the system.

  • Hertzberg differentiates people like Ehrenreich from the Horowitzes as if people like her represented the work-a-day mainstream of the Left. One of the reasons I canceled my subscription to The Nation was because of a column I read by Ehrenreich written in the aftermath of 9/11 in which she vented her regret that the only real contemporary challenge to Western capitalism comes from an ideology hostile to the equality of women. It was just an egregiously inappropriate thing to say at the time.

  • two symptoms of conservatives: being realistic and having a heart.

  • I'm reticent, analytic and generally conservative. Yet you say otherwise. Must I be wrong?

  • No, just rare.
