The Cuban boxing style in fact had a big influence in the Russian boxing actually. I hate communism, but that's an undeniable fact. Russian boxing was devloped with the help of Cuba, just like Sambo had incorporated a lot of Judo. The Russians of course were always very technical fighters. Watch Fedor fights and you'll see him do a lot of Judo like movements, specially the ones that break down the opponent's grapple.

No actually, his name is Manuel Vega, Cuba has the biggest success in amateur Olympic Boxing to date, and Ivan Drago is presented in the movie as the amateur World Champion (actually that probably meant Olympic Champion, but Sly didn't mention te Olympic Games in the movie cause it is a trademark and you have to pay an extra fee to the IOC just to mention the Olympics or showing the five colored rings). Plus, a british trainer would make no sense in the cold war days.
