To communicate between the control room and the studio. Typically, such intercom activity is to be done when not on the air.

Why have an intercom? So the director can give out commands to the entire team [not just specific people] during the break

This was one day where they had not read that rulebook. ;)

For those who don't understand what happened here, They were ON THE AIR, LIVE when some idiot in the control room started paging someone over the intercom! The weatherman had every right to be pissed off, that is something you just don't do.
