  • OMG! The DJ break on this is ridiculous! Bring that shit back on today's Hip-Hop records, somebody, PLEASE!!!

  • al- rakim is a sura in the quran, in arabic it means the cave. lets hope he records more, because we dont need rakim in self imposed exile.................

  • GREATNESS!!!!

  • To appreciate Rakim you have to look at the time period he rhymed in. He came in the era when you had to be a true lyricist and he stood out among the best in the history of hip hop.

  • Awwww, Rakim is doubtlessly the most fluid lyricist ever to spit! And this is a jewel!!! Gotta respect this brother! Just fluid, cool-as-a-fuck dude. Sick is all I gotta say...oh, yeah and peace to the God!

  • rakim , kool g rap, phife dog, ra rugged man, are the top lyricists ever!!

  • @kahorepohaka Love that your givin a nod to Phife here, but Posdnous is the best lyricist from the native tongues. Pharoahe Monche, Aesop Rock, Azeem are 3 im my top 10. Couldn't agree with you more on Kool G Rap and Rakim though, Legends!

  • once upon a crime

  • Pac and Big aren't overrated. They were great. Rakim is just the best ever. Nas is second to Ra but not close enough to put him in the same level

  • Rakim and Nas are my favorites get out of here with the overrated 2pac and B.i.g

  • @23Tavarez Well said, I've been telling people that for years, which I've gotten tired of repeating & debating about who the best are I've never understood why practically. everyone says big & pac were the best ever. BULLSHT! They were way far from it. They were all hype. Regardless of order, my top three are RAKIM, BIG DADDY KANE, & KOOL G. RAP! Real True Legends of Hip-Hop!

  • @23Tavarez rakim & nas shit all over biggie & tupac lyrically

  • DAM STILL IN LOVE WITH HIM AFTER 30 YEARS & I AM NOT TELLING MY AGE!!

    LOL =)

  • somebody told me he runs a hip hop tour of NY, wonder if that is true?

  • When did hiphop lose the funk? haven't heard a bassline like this on a modern track outside of underground in a long time.

  • @ultimatevcfan Idk dude... I'm with you on Rakim, and 2 pac is up there although I wouldnt put him second. But youve got Guru and Andre above Big L, Biggie, Prodigy, Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane? I'd even put Eminem above those guys.

  • @sabre51 above Big L and Kool G Rap dude you're crazy go listen to Big L's punclines ... he had and still after diying he holds those master punchlines that 50 % of the mc's since and after him used ;)

  • @ultimatevcfan gangstarr? you mean guru bro, gangstarr's the group, and ...no kool g rap?...never.

  • i remember when mix tapes were actual tapes, no hip hop on the radio no videos the creativity was insane the rule was no body could bite another artist lyrics you had to be your own god and create your own universe. Rakim is one of those hip hop gods no dout

  • love the Rick sample in the hook...

  • Im from the west coast and have always been a fan of rakim since the 90's. But i would love to see The Game collaberate with rakim...that would be the shizet...make it happen plz

  • I love how the most of the comments on this page are by articulate and intelligent people, shows that sophistcated music truly unites refined minds.

  • Yeah! This is what i like! Thumbs up!

  • ' I kick a hole in the speaker pul the plug and then jet'. So many people use that line. Is there a reason?

  • @MrCommenterguy: he's actually quoting himself. That line was first used in "Microphone Fiend" and then covered. The verse goes: "I was a fiend, back before I became a teen/I melt the microphone instead of cones of ice cream. Music orientated so when hip-hop was originated, I fit it like pieces of puzzles, complicated. I grab the mike and try to say "yes ya'll" - they try and take it and say that I'm too small. Cool. I don't get upset, I kick a hole in the speaker, pull the plug, then I jet."

  • Agelessly dope, fluidly incomparable, many may follow but the Leader leads. The "R" endures, eclipses those who dare to go off-the-dome...I have witnessed his freestyle devastation, words just drop from his brain to his tongue like a gumball machine. Oldschool, Newschool, this Brother is not just in Class, he's teaching it: Doctorate in Hip-Hop, Dr Rakim is the George Wahington of Mount Rushmore in this game - difference is, his profile cuts a better visage. Flow forever my man

  • Rakim and Nas is all I ever need to keep hip hop alive!

if media played them more all these fake rap hustlers would be so dead and out of the game for good!

  • Lyrically, the BEST to EVER do it!!! Rhymes so smooth, they flow like the Nile...smh

  • weres rakim today?

  • @chickenmaster66 he was on The Roots Wake Up mixtape that came out not long ago, he said in 09 seventh seal would be his last album but i hope he still puts out more work

  • @chickenmaster66 cork ireland

  • @chickenmaster66 right where he should be... In New York City doing shows at bb kings and getting guap ya heard.

  • I love knowing that this man is still alive!! =)) haha

  • this is a stupid question, but is he dead?

  • @TheF2TheInnian ~ what up my dude. Anytime you need to know the info of anyone who is of celebrity status, go to wikipedia and look up their name. On that note, Rakim,as TheF2Theinnian mention, is not dead. Thank God, the god MC is alive and well.

  • Makes me miss Eric B

  • YA'LL ALREDDY KNO!!!!!!!!!!

  • Someone had the audacity to write, Rakim is the 2nd greatest MC of all time. That is an insult to the highest degree in the history of Hip Hop. Let me get straight to the point. You make like Eminem, you may like 50 Cent, you may like Jay Z or you may like whoever. NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE is greater than Rakim. This man dropped "Let the Rhythem Hit Em" and "Don't Sweat the Technique" at the beginning of the 90's and you're gonna say he's #2??? Get the fuck outta here.

  • @Baltimorehop U alreddy kno my G, a nigga can't fukk wit the god on they're BEST DAY!!!

  • @abrooklynnigga ~ You know that's right my dude. I'm from the BX. Ppl seem to have no history of little memories when that right bullshit like that. I'm a always go in on whoever diss the God MC and others on his level like Cool G Rap, BDK, Nas, ODB, B.I.G., Canibus, and all the bruhs who wave OUR flag errday! Keee it 100 my dude.

  • @Baltimorehop Dawg I didn't start this but imho Rakim IS #2 with KRS-1 #1 but the R is 1 of 2 MC's that if someone said he is #1 that I really have no argument against it. (Nas is the other by the way)

  • @cowboyfanSkip ~ I can't dissagree with you. It's either or with them as well as with Nas. I was addressing some other shit that disturbs me with a lot of Johnnie come lately people who swear Eminem is the greatest MC to ever grab a mic. I have a major issue with that. Regardless of how skillful or nice he is, to me, he doesn't have the battle history or comp during his era to equal to that. If he was able to smash Canibus, he got an few points. I don't think he can smash Canibus though.

  • @Baltimorehop do doubt son!

  • smoothest style rakim haha i love ra shits dope

  • they dont make music like they use to

  • this song proves no ones on Rakims level

  • The Second Greatest MC Of All Time!

  • @eazbac lmao relax catch. and who would be first

  • @eazbac whos da 1st?

  • @uate650mataele thats rakim lool , that phrase is in the microphone fiend. peace

  • @eazbac second are you crack?

  • RA on these types of beats is what SEVENTH SEAL shoulda been!!

  • @catch2370 yeah besides holy are u, it was disappointing

  • @nastynas373 no shit!

  • What year was this recorded? Does anyone know?

  • I can't even comprehend how I keep seeing all this stuff about Wayne/Drake/Young Money on a MOTHER FUCKING RAKIM track!

  • The sample voice saying once upon a time is Slick Rick :) awesome !!!

  • Rakim is timeless feel me. Everything he touches is a street classic

  • Umm..where did Nas get his style from? Look no further than right here.

  • How many MC's make your' eyes well up with tears and give you that lump in your' throat, because the shit that they just said blew your' mind? Rakim and Kool G Rap are two of my favorites. Listen to the fuckin radio now and all you'll get is fuckin Kesha

  • this is some sick shit

  • Dont question a legend because he marked his past and can proof it.

  • We gotta give props to Rakim but also we gotta give props to Eminem, they are lyrical beasts and they keep hip hop alive

  • There is nothing wrong with giving Eminem his due , hes a monster.

But lets look at it for what it is , your trying to compare an Undeniable Champion to Certified Legend. Both outstanding but one CLEARLY far and away above the other

  • There's Rakim... Then everyone else.

  • who gives a fuck about eminem, this is Rakim the GOD MC............ he's just a LEGEND

  • @DeepInTheMobb eminem sucks

  • Hey, if you like Rakim you should check out my vids. I don't claim to be anywhere near as good as he is, but as i haven't been rapping long i could really use the feedback. Thanks.

    P.S Fucking amazing song.

  • eminem is not the same as old. his old shit like slim shady lp and marshall mathers lp are probably the best cds to ever come out

  • can some 1 get me these Unreleased Rakim songs please.

    I'ld greatly appreciate it.

    1st. - Shades Of Black

2nd. - New York To Cali

    3rd. Once Upon A Rhyme

4th. - Shades of Black (Remix)

  • yeah the legendary MC , he love what he do and the same as u ?

  • The R is in his own category. His rhymes are poetry and scriptures, dont try to compare him to anyone.

  • His competition is none cause he remains at the top like the Sun!.....RAKIM....God Emcee.....!!!!

  • The Greatest MC of all time

  • @nezor2000 no lie the best who ever did it

  • this kinda flow do you only find frome the past.thanks chief.

  • Fantastic Rakim Allah is back even though late and check out Slick Ricks refrain!! he is still the man in the Game smoking all you phonie MCS!!

  • SMOOOOOTHHHHHH!!! This the real HIP HOP right here!!!

  • I Mean dope lol.

  • I mean dope lol..

  • Comment removed

  • the real god of the game called hip-hop......

  • one of the true hip hop kings!

  • rakim wipes out ALOT of MC's, i mean ALOT, real talk wooord up LEGENDARY MC

  • can someone help me out and tell me what year this is from?

  • after listening to Rakim for a couple years and reading about him being the God MC the switch clicked and I realized he is, in terms of lyrics and delivery, the G.O.D.

I try to show my homies and they just don't feel it. Hopefully someday they will see the light

  • i hear you man, i try showin my friends and they hear me spit and they're later saying "Oh shit you i see now with Rakim's Influence man." and im like yall should of seen that in the videos he had i mean Follow the Leader, i ain't no joke, this song, Lyrics of Fury i mean i could go on, on the songs that i learned how to rhyme because of Rakim.

  • word up, that's real talk

  • @ProjektXero91 Wurd! I'm the same way! The top two rappers that have influenced me and my rhymes are Rakim and Big L. I'm a gay 20 yr. old white boy from the suburbs, so obviously I can't credibly talk about the streets, but I craft my lyrical structure to match the legends' flow plus I throw in witticism and humor that would make Big L himself laugh!

  • what the hell do your peeps listen to anyways?.......

  • Nas,Jay-z,Rakim,Eminem,Loaded Lux, Tailb Kweli, Common, Prince EA, etc

  • Uh. y u go jay-z on ur list bra .. he aint movin well through time, only song im feelin from him in past 100 years is NY State of Mind .. even thats mediocre

  • if you think thats jay-z's only good song in years...u must be deaf or biased. his metaphors and story-tellin are ill.

    Go look up:

    *Meet da Parents

    *Song Cry

    *PSA

    *Soon You'll Understand

    *December 4th

    *Moment of Clarity

    somebody cosign if u agree

  • story telling is weak except D'Evils

jay hasnt really struck me greatly lyrically since Reasonable Doubt.

but he does have a slick as flow and control of delivery. the only recent shit hes done thats impressed me is Brooklyn(We Go Hard)

  • i co sign but he still a gay ass nigga if u look at it in a real hip hop point of view. hes on some hollywood shit right now.

  • @youngskillz08 NY state of mind is a nas song, empire state of mind is jay-z's... NY state of mind is much better though, after ether i think any real hiphop fan knows nas>jay-z

  • Tupac?!?

  • @jville1stand1up: Rakim, Nas, Kool G Rap, Guru, Pac.

  • @ jville1stand1up wheres nas??? and jayz is fuckin wack now

@youngskillz08 ny state of mind is nas's song, jays is empire state of mind, no disrespect or anything just lettin u kno, i dont want jay gettin credit for such a classic track hahaha

  • @jville1stand1up my b i didnt see nas at first now i do

  • now i know why most people have Rakim as #1 on their top mc's of all time

  • Rakim is No. 0, THE GOD MC, POINT BLANK, NO ONE BETTA, I DARE ANYONE TO DISSAGREE!!!

  • i havent heard this guy curse once in any of his songs....or am i mistaken ? this guy is just ill with this shit and doesnt use curses to get views...crazy

  • Rakim is always ill i been a fan from the begainning.

  • actually thats false. pacs made top 10 best selling rap album.. but he's not in the top 5... he was an amazing lyricist and song writer, and as for his diss? it doesnt even make top 5 best diss tracks.. that wasn't pac's style, even though he held it down on that track..

  • lol tupac. Get off the radio fool.

  • how can these muggs even question rakim//get out/go back to school/and stay in math class/get 20 years plus under your belt/and then come talk

  • mad

  • Rakim is Ruff !

  • Why y'all usin' Ra's space for anything other than relatin' to RA?! See, THAT'S why U in the STATE you in.....

  • word up... i know the truth son..

  • Pac was a great rapper (for impact/influence, storytelling, emotion, etc), but I agree he's not a top 50 LYRICIST.

  • yo b, 2 pac was not the kind of rapper reciting rhetorical run on sentences-- saying nothing as most N.Y. rappers are. frankly, alot of them niggas straight weak lyrically. off in rhythem too. freestyle aint what its all cracked up to be. one must become a great writer, and 2 pac was that and a terriffic at it too.

  • ARE YOU FOR REAL HE HAS LIKE 3 Ghost writers kid he is trash

  • who does???

  • Ya lil wayne got ghost writers he faker den a 3 dalla bill

  • hahaha like who

  • Can you tell me the ghost writers then

  • apparently Gillie Da Kid was one of them. honestly i don't believe people when they say all lil waynes songs are freestyles, maybe some of them are but there are other songs where you can tell its not a freestyle

  • yea Gillie Da Squid Said he did although once wayne made a diss song to Gille, No one hears from him anymore

  • U heard Cannon? n he prolly a ghost writer for a reason. It's more the fact that another man wrote two albums for him den he tryed ta diss him n den went on to call himself da best rapper alive. There is no reason to any respect for any talent wack ass wayne might have.

  • like i said where is da proof that he did, Wille Da Squid is the only one in the old cash money that has said anything like that, no one else has

  • It is pretty clear that Gillie actually wrote Wayne's shit. If you listen to Gillie's rhymes, you can tell because it sounds just like something Wayne would say on Carter 1.

  • oh and no just about everyone that wayne works with say's he just goes in and he doesn't have it written on anything, and yea not ALL of his like 10000 songs are freestyles

  • i think i heard rumors of Drake even writing rhymes for him but that's just rumors, just because he didn't have it written on anything in the studio though doesn't mean it was a freestyle, he could have just used rhymes he had memorized, i think biggie was also a rapper that would freestyle on some songs, same as Rakim, Jay-Z

  • yea thats very true he doesn't always freestyle, and drake said on an interview that he doesn't write for wayne at all, Now i don't know about Jay-z doing that though

  • @realhiphop4ever WRONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG.... jay, ra hardly ever freestyled, theymainly had to write there shit, at beggining biggie could freestyle but dropped that quickly

  • @tmcnary2 Don't be silly. I rhyme and I never go in the studio with a pen or a pad, but I don't freestyle either. I have catalogs of songs memorized in my head then I go through to the beats and choose the one that fits. Sometimes I make the hook up on the spot, or if I already have a hook, I might change it to fit the tempo.

  • i could believe he freestyles most of his shit cause its horrible i respect that he found a way to make money and get out the hood but no one that horrible at rapping should be gettin so much credit he doesnt deserve n i kinda beleive gillie wrote the carter one cause they flow very similiar but if you notice after that shit between gillie and wayne u wont see wayne in phillie?? scared much lmao

  • Pun???Big L???Big Daddy Kane??Kool G Rap???Masta Ace?OC?

  • i almost did put Big Daddy Kane, but like i said this is MY list not yours k (:

  • who is that rapping in the sample at the beginning?

  • its rakim

  • do you know what song?

  • Microphone Fiend

  • HiralShah00 you pussy , lil wayne is real rap music? lil wayne can suck my balls..

    ugly bitch..

  • eminem didnt do shit to hip hop he made some classic albums

but lil wayne on the other hand........

  • It's gonna hurt you all to know that Rakim think Eminem is the greatest lyricist of all time. Said so in an interview. Yeah, Eminem's dope lyrics really killed rap. How the fuck do you let someone kill rap. You don't. Go make a record if you have a problem and change shit. I'd hate to quote gandhi, but be the change you wish to see in the world. Instead of bitching and degrading mother fuckers who worked their asses off.

  • he didn't say he was the greatest of all time, besides that interview is old and he's wrong if he did say that.

  • That is called upping an artist new.THe thing is.Rakim knows that a legend upping a new artist is good for the fresh artist. We know Rakim allways tough KRS,BDK,Kool G Rap and the cats from the old school he used to rock are the top.But if he would say that in an interview everyone would say:"ah he just hating on the new school"

  • but remember he said that when eminem was actually pretty decent now i know he doesn't think that
