They never actually depicted the father as bad. They even depicted him as a loving parent who cared a lot for his own daughter. Heck in the end, he basically sacrificed himself so that his daughter could live.

They played in the fact that children who have special needs parents and/or family members can be (perhaps often, depending on the community) stigmatized because they are related to them. And the negative affect it can have people's lives

Mental retardation (or MR) is a true political term just like Special Needs (sometimes referred to as SEN) is as well.

You can look it up if you don't believe me.

It is about owning your labels, just in the same way as straight people could throw labels at the LGBT community, white people have historically oppressed black people. Organisations OF disabled or deaf people exist, you might be surprised what you learn. By that, listen to disabled people rather than the know best attitude
