Bionicle is circling in the toilet. It's becoming just too expensive to make them and keep them in the same price range. If you look back at the toys before the toa nuva were released, there were a lot more parts to them. Besides, the plastic was much more vibrant and wasn't as cheap as the mahri shit. I doubt that the franchise is going. To much money to be made. I'll bet that the anouncement was to drive sales up in a not particularly good economy. Either way, I don't think it will be much of a noticable profit loss for the heads at LEGO. Suckers are expensive to buy, and probably aren't cheap to make either, the first of which drives new buyers away, and the second of which would make up (in the execs eyes) for the cutting. Granted, In the fandoms eyes, not so much.
