Believe the main reason for the beattie well tank only doing short shunt runs, was due to the failure of the other well tank it wasn't factored in to the timetable... when they got the go ahead for the other one it could only fit in around what was already planned, so it just did shunting movements. It was planned to do a double head of LSWR locos, as you know Calbourne has airbrake equipment... yet i didn't happen, instead they used W8 for it.
