saw them in 1981 at umist manchester the night before the jobs not bombs march to the labour party conference in blackpool that year.about 50 people there and the ticket was 50p.aint that funny
This was the first Chams song I heard. It was way back in the winter of '86 on an alternative radio station that now plays hip-hop. Thanks, guys. I'm still listening to your music and similar artists today.
Seen them in 86 Darlington arts centre, just as Strange Times was released most of the set list was that album, Excellent live band and for me what makes the Chameleons stand out apart from the obvious song writing talent was those guitars 2 in a 4 piece band plus bass very intricate no other band could match, Many a band have originated from Manchester but for me this is the best band so far and will take some beating.
@poisondose yeah i soooo agree... u see i saw em in early 80s n they were life changing like the H bomb in a good way of course... i feel they r massively under rated but super loved by their fans since 1980...super super treasured band of mine ..n im 42 XXX love ya
One day someone will stick this on the end of a film and they'll get a few more quid, they deserve it. one of them works in a DIY shop these days. He's happy, but he should be sitting on fat royalty cheques like some of those crapheads making utter DRIVEL are.
along with The Sisters and The Mission, the Chameleons form the perfect triune godhead of the highest musical order. This song still makes me happy after all these years but in a very sad way indeed....ahh, the mystery of music..what would our lives be without it? I dread even the thought..
@WayToSaveTheWorld The acoustic version is Burgess' true vision for the song, given that it's an ode to the deep personal loss he suffered when he lost one of his best friends to cancer. This version was originally posited as a single for Strange Times, so that's why it's more uptempo.
I, too prefer this one, mainly for the tonally shifted final verse, the lyrics of which are extremely powerful.
I like both in different ways, but I can't get enough of that lead riff in this that's missing on the acoustic. On the other hand, I prefer the chorus on the acoustic, and the way Mark whispers "sneaking through the back door" gives me chills. I didn't know what the song was about, thanks for telling me :) Was "On the Beach" originally intended to be acoustic too? Because I've heard both in equal measure.
That ringing guitar...resonates so beautifully in my mind and brings me back to great times and sad times and all that live in the 80's and early nineties.......The Chameleons UK.....irreplaceable..great music and words for a generation....even applicable today!!!!Love you guys...
couldn't agree with you more folks...listened to this song bladdered the day i left school in 1987...brings back some funny and very fuzzy and drunk memories...love it.

A great overlooked song from an even greater overlooked band- overlooked at least in the dreadful musical wasteland that is the US.

This has nothing to do with any kind of gothik or other shit, The chameleons were from another world. And maybe we could be there when we are dead.

because he is a powerful motivator in the wrong sense..from a control perspective..
think about the line and song, 'try looking inwardly'..
they want you looking anywhere but inside yourself, for that is where truth lays

The version of this on Spotify is acoustic, which is beautiful too, but this just takes the biscuit.
