  • Where was this recorded? If it was recorded in Nashville, the studio musicians did a great job of copying the Motown sound.

  • @wildbilltexas Nashville with Don Gant the primary key to the sound. Bradley's Barn with several of Charlie McCoy's players.

  • Thumbs up if the movie The Ward brought you here

  • This reminds me of being in my room with my brother working on plastic model cars and listening to the most popular radio station in America. ""Boss Radio" 93 KHJ!

  • Alice

  • I hate being old....but OMG was the music good in those days!

  • i heard this song on the ward i love itt xx

  • Jesus, this rocks.....

  • I was also made aware of that song by the movie "The Ward". I love that rich and full sound...

  • One of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE! Loved listening to this cruising around in my Olds last summer. Look forward to hearing this cruising my '57 Mercury with the windows down like it's the summer of '65!!!

  • ooooohhhhhh I Loved this, waaaaaayyyyy back then.

  • Two questions: 1. What recording is this from and 2. Was that the engineer sitting in the control room who said "Very Good" at the end? I must have played this ten times already tonight, I still like it as much as when it a hit on the radio, what 46 year ago now? Man I'm ancient!

  • @G8GT364CI Straight from my copy of the master, but if you have any last wish I will give you a shot of Jack Daniels and seal you in with the actual tape on studio monitors...a good way to go to heaven.

  • @AnnaMayWongSociety No wonder it sounds so good, thanks for the upload.

  • The ward

  • What a great tune, always loved this.

  • I still think Franki valli had the best falsetto. I love THIS SONG

  • The Ward.

  • Interesting timing. In the opening chorus they go from singing "baby" on the 3 count and then they push it landing on the 2.You don't hear that effect very often and it takes good musicians to be able to nail down that kind of phrasing.

  • this the first record i got still listen to it 40 years later brill song

  • This song knocks me out....

  • this is good thnx for posting

    cool song

  • What I like about this is The Newbeats -- even with a high falsetto singer ROCKED. Prince, you are excellent -- but you still lag behind Mr Henley slightly in the balls out rocking falsetto -- especially at the end of this song.

  • who's better,Larry Henley or Robin Gibb?check out a little known Newbeats tune,Break Away(from that boy).

  • @nomiclas Larry Henley by far ♥♥

  • @NYChica23 OK he was so good but how long did he make music?i wonder what he would have done with his career if the times don't change?

  • very good indeed, simple just like me i just love it thanks anna

  • As for men who can sing falsetto, Larry Henley of the Newbeats has them all beat. Lou Christie and Frankie Valli may have been the most notable, but Larry Henley's falsetto is 100X more soulful and has heavy R&B influences.

  • LOL..I love this..And our mom and Dad thought this music would warp our minds..Hmm, Look what We did? Can you spell Internet...cell phones...etc..Kids of Today???

  • This music so classic. Grew up in this era; didn't realize how spoiled I was at the time, but truly see it now! Thanks for uploading this song.

  • THE WARD

  • RUUUUUUUUUUN BABY RUN! RUUUUUUUN BABY RUN! BACK INTO MY ARM! I love how the meter goes sharply to the right during those phrases on the video though I hope no speakers were blown out.

Did you blow out the speakers doing this?

  • @Luciferminusone What??? I can't hear you!

  • @Luciferminusone im wearing headphone, almost just blew my fucking ear drums!!

  • Voice at the end: Very bad. :) Thanks for uploading this wonderful song! :) My other favorite is bread and butter which I heard on Brave Little Toaster Goes To Mars for the first time.

  • Oh, fantastic post ! Love it, love it, love it !!!

  • This song would have been better if the blonde dude was not screaming like chick. Really...

  • Blue-eyed soul at its finest...

  • Henley wrote "Wind Beneath My Wings"

  • the movie the ward

  • @PUKKA13 Ugh, Lyndsy Fonseca was so cute during this scene <3

  • Thank you for this share, its magical for me, love the quality. Peace :-)

  • love this one at the moment thanks

lovely slice of pop / northern soul

  • it always makes my back crack and my liver quiver mercy

  • Wow. Waited for the fade at the end and it never came. You have a master copy. You lucky dude. No point asking how you got it but thanks for putting it up. It sounds entirely live.

  • i like this 1 more than bread & butter. larry had a unique voice, didnt he. they r all in their 70's now. oh God i feel old, ah who am i kiddin, i am old.

  • The movie The Ward brought me here lol.

  • @armyofshadows omg, same haha

  • @armyofshadows same here, this song rocks!

  • Above & Beyond's new vid 'Sun & Moon' brought me here - check out the video for a Northern soul revival of sorts.

it´s not necsessary to watch the instruments

    you can hear ist!!!

  • I like the way you say.. very good!!! It was very good!!! Thanks for posting!!

  • played at the wheel 1970 .

  • @shmuli9: yes, just a year apart ! (70-71)

  • great sound, thx for sharing this one ktf

  • For years I thought this was by the Four Seasons!

  • this is in my top 10 of all time hits

  • Thank you for posting this. Brings me back in time! Love the VU meters! Pretty cool! Reminds me of my audio enginering days.

  • First time I heard this song I thought it was The Four Seasons, boy was I ever wrong . Glad to finally know who it really is.

  • Absolute teen angst classic. You want to sing along, it is just that great of a song. I also have the original Hickory 45. You know who loves you, "Just leave him and run back to my side...."

  • saturate those VU meters baby

  • Fabulous!!

  • "RUN BABY RUN" was a hit in England in 1971, a few yrs after it was recorded. I bought the single, loved it then, still do...

  • @gazzymodo I vaguely remember that, about the same time "Pickettywitch" was popular, right?

  • THESE BOYS CAN SING, AND IT`S GOT A GROOVIE BEAT.

  • Was once told that Larry Henley (the lead singer)is the brother of Don Henley of the Eagles...LOL

  • @AnnaMayWongSociety Thankfully all this music and the DC5 are just a key clip away on YOUTUBE!!!!!!!!!

  • I didn't hear this song until about a week ago (I wasn't "allowed" to, at least by the oldies statrion we had here - we were supposed to think the ONLY song by the Newbeats was "Bread and Butter"), but it does sound a LOT like Motown or some of the 4 Season's attempt at doing Motown (like "Let's Hang On" and "Opus 17")

  • The 2 brothers singing with Dave Henley are the Mathis Brothers, cool.

  • what a belter of a tune class

  • @AnnaMayWongSociety Last I heard, Dave Clark was embroiled in some legal shenanigans over the 5's music. That probably explains why the History of the DC5 CD is going for $40 a pop in used record stores--when you can find it at all. I did find, however, the Best of the Newbeats compilation CD on Varese Sarabande, and bought it ($7,99!), and it's easily findable...

  • I didn't hear this song until the '70s, when I was a pimply teen roustabout, but when I did I was hooked! I like it even more than "Bread and Butter" (which I like too). It should have gotten higher on the charts than #12 though...

  • Motown by the newbeats. Perfect

  • I remeber this song as a little kid. It sounded like The Four Seasons meet Gary Lewis and the Playboys!

  • My little computer speakers are really rockin out! Sounds great!

  • I haven't heard this song in years! One of the "good ones" !!!

  • the big room at wigan aaahhh

  • The falsetto and whimsical arrangement are what make this "Bubble Gum" sound special!

  • 0:21: Red zone: *Insert You Tube speakers tearing apart here and nobody hears a thing anymore*

  • I'M STILL RUNNING :)

  • Loved this as a young teenager...I still do.

  • Stopping by for another listen. The cold ending makes this one the best version available.

  • classic song

  • Is that Bill Clinton in the middle ?

  • @hullofateam LOL! No, he was never a singer, but it sure looks like him.

  • I think I shoplifted this 45rpm from a record shop in town. Oerrr ........

  • @stnicholas54 At least it wasn't something by Pat Boone.

  • have the original 45 of this..........bloody brilliant!!! Nice one!!

  • GREAT...........Nuff Said.

  • THANK YOU!!!!!! love this A WHOLE LOT!!!!

  • Bread And Butter was not the Newbeats only record, as most oldie rock stations would have us listeners believe.

  • The only other guy who had a voice like this was Dick from 'Dick and DeeDee'

  • @teeembeee What about Tiny Tim?

  • @teeembeee A whole lot of guys sang falsetto back in the 50s and 60s. Frankie Valli, Frankie Ford, Del Shannon, Bobby Hatfield, and I could name a lot more. I LOVE falsetto singing. What was truly unique was for a girl singer to sing falsetto. There were a very few who did it and I can't think of any of them right now.

  • ¡fantástica!

  • Larry Henley, the Newbeats lead singer, co-wrote "Wind Beneath My Wings" a #1 song for Bette Midler in 1989.

  • An all time great.., love it !!

  • It's the original, all right. I had the 45 back in the day. Sounds every bit as good as it did then. Mark of a really great song. :)

  • Oh YEAH.This is rock n roll.I got the 45 version on the Hickory label and it's in

MONO.I'm a college DJ and I don't know if this is the cover version or it;s the

Original version, but who cares it's great no matter how you slice it.

    Thanks for posting it.

  • @loujh01 yeah yeah...this is the original and the same take as your MONO copy but they goofed on the tape speed when the transfer to MONO was done so Mono drags a bit.

  • @AnnaMayWongSociety I have the UK pressing on London and the US pressing on Hickory. I always wondered why the US pressing sounded slower but never made the connection that the UK pressing I have must be stereo. Awesome knowledge!

  • Still sounds as great as it did back in the day. Proof of a really good song! Thanks for posting. :)

  • The one playing the piano was a genius.

  • Excelente cancion , tenía mucho tiempo de no oirla, pero hoy me deleite oyendola mas de una vez.

    Sigabn así que clasico

  • squealin like a stuck pig -- love it!

  • AnnaMayWong Society? Wow. She was awesome:actress, linguist, intellectual and business person.

  • Loved it when I first years ago...it still is great...

  • brings back memories and more memories. thanks

  • great music then is still great music now It will be that way 45 years from now... Thanks for remembering the Newbeats!

  • I have this song on a 45, but not this version with the quick ending. My 45 is the mono version. This is even better in stereo..Thanks for posting...

  • Thanks! Was just listening to my Mono copy and you have the great stereo mix. I just started posting my vinyl rips to HIDef too, your page is inspiring. Sounds great!

  • blue eyed soul at its best

  • Great song from all those years ago. Did she ever come back to you? Hah ha HAH !!

  • Good mock Motown sound.

  • excellent version..i never knew the ending stopped cold

  • @sexymama1966 This is the first time in my life I've heard the cold ending on this song, and I've enjoyed it constantly since its initial release.

  • I was in the 5th grade when this great tune came on. I remember these guys doing "Bread and Butter" on "Where the Action Is" on ABC. I would sing along trying to sound like Franky Valli although I knew it was the Guys who sang "Bread and Butter"

I was trying to post a comment but I could not stop singing along.

  • Comment removed
