@TheMadspy300 : Sure, we've been doing it for years. Just be smooth with your cranking so that you don't stress the gears inside the motors. Electrically there is no problem at all.
Hi folks, If you are reasonably gentle, there is no damage to the motor. The gears inside the motor can take some manual turning (just like the motor turns them), and the electricity generated is safely dissipated as motion energy in the rover and/or a small amount of heat (not enough to fry anything). Just crank smoothly to avoid sudden forces on the motor's gears.
it's an alternator. if you turn it, it creates electricity, if you give it a current, it turns. There's one in almost every car. it starts the car, and charges the battery. This is in no way harmful.
@skylorz Mindstorms motors can't get broken because they aré designed for that (also think that kids use this kit)

Who does it work without the brain
jontysvideos 4 weeks ago
guys the motors have rotation counters inside them
THEY ARE DESIGNED TO BE MANUALLY TURNED
THERE IS A BUILT IN PROGRAM IN THE NXT BRICK THAT FORCES YOU TO TURN A MOTOR LIKE IN THE VIDEO

Why not a long wire for comfortable use .

@TheMadspy300 Could you clarify what is what you're talking about .

@almouloudi Ok, Is it safe to connect 2 motors together and use them to convert energy to power one another

Why don't you need a brick?

uh.....you are killing that engine
skylorz 2 years ago
Mindstorms runs on direct current, so I'm pretty sure the motor itself wouldn't be damaged, but the electronics could be damaged by polarity change.
TheJrEngineer 2 years ago 4
@TheJrEngineer the motor could turn either way using the proper brick, so it is most likely to use polarity changes

try it the other way, move the car!
lordthom1 2 years ago
that messes up the motor because it builds up electricity in the motor
magemager0 2 years ago
If you had the slightest idea how an electic motor worked you'd know that's bs.
spectrex1 2 years ago
in my robotics tean, my teacher has been doing that stuff for like 20 years, he told us not to roll the robot becasue of that
magemager0 2 years ago
not i this motor theirs a built in rotation sensor that only works if you turn the motor
dappadcoolman 2 years ago
than how come when the motor moves it doesn't mess up the nxt brick?
jakeatollah 2 years ago
just to let u know: lots of ppl said it would damage the motor by doin this
