I think you will find that science does try and create reality, telling people that abortion is o.k etc is one such example. I would say that it is bizzare to create napalm, H bombs, and abortion pills to kill our own kind. It's correct to say that the flying spaghetti monster argument is particularly effective in exposing the irrationality of theistic belief. It's incorrect to say that it only applies to theism however. The idea of a 'calculating intellect' is as much of a human construct as any other God: it's an unwarranted extrapolation of our own characteristics, if a touch more impersonal than theistic gods. There is still just as little evidence for a 'calculating intellect' as there is for a theistic god.

I assume he was referring to the deist God of people like Thomas Paine and the founding fathers - a creator who pulls the universe out of a hat and then presumably buggers off to do some meta-fly-fishing, or perhaps some DIY in his super-shed, precluding him from intervening in the universe after that point. IMO this is the kind of craven halfway-housing you tend to get when people try to reconcile science with belief in God.

@scottmedhaug Are you for real? The WORD atheist denotes a relationship. An atheist is someone who is does NOT (a-) believe in a theist god (theist). Theism is the concept of a god that interacts with the daily world, and it has many permutations in various religions. Of course you can be an atheist in relation to Allah, Yahweh, Brahman, Vishnu, Mithra, Zeus, et cetera. Dawkins' point was valid - Christians claim to disbelieve in other theistic gods, so they are atheists regarding those gods.

Atheism is the belief in no god, not a plot to destroy the world. I stay out of these debates, but I'm tired of seeing that atheism teaches evil. We het our morals from our parents, and from the United States constitution, not a fictorial book.

@sonus03 I think not sonus in fact religion has actually convined us that there is some form of reality. This reality has allowed us to create science etc and without it the nihilist reality created by science which would be of course the honest perception of the universe would lead us all into severe mental illness.
Dont forget the reality created by science is nihilism

Theists are the ones without morality. Instead they preach mindless obedience to inexplicable commandments from an invisible man in the sky.
Anything their god tells them is moral because god says so.
That is not moral, that is fucking dangerous. They have completely suspended their faculty of critical thinking.
Pestilence, genocide, murder of infants, Hell -- according to the bible God has done all of these things to mankind when he was displeased.

So let me see..if you are an Athiest you have no morals but if you believe in God you automatically become endowed with wisdom and morals. Well if that be true, why is it everytime an Athiest shares their opinion they are threatened with violence from these religious people ? Oh, now I remember, it's because they have no intelligent response so they resort to un-thinking violence.

How would you know if you're not an atheist yourself? You are pretty good at telling other people what they're supposed to be. You're a bigot. Also I hope that English is not your first language - if it's not, then no big deal - I don't hold it against you that you're struggling to express yourself in English. i agree all the meaniing in the universe come from myself, WHERE else would it come from, fairies? I want my family to live in a good, peaceful world, I feel sick at the idea of people suffering in the world, i want to make it better. That's enough meaning for me, i don't need an eternal, might i add BORING, heaven where nothing can be learned, nothing new can be discovered, no excitement of the unknown. no thanks! Sounds like HELL to me.
