  • your parents would hate this - check.

    raucous - check.

melodic and still well-crafted - check.

cool performers with a 'well, this is us - take it or leave it' attitude - check.

the sum as all variables approach infinity----> as ass kicking lesson in what rock and roll used to be.

  • Look at that Harry Potter smash those drums!

  • in my country things are not that good with people...and me as a younger one relate with this song a lot

  • ...that is to say...they found their way. When does an artist and at what point in their careers do they actually find their own voice? I was commenting on clearly how British punk influenced American bands for at least a decade after it's introduction in the UK, maybe even longer. Sonic Youth kind of wore that jacket and then to the benefit of the rest of us, shed that skin.

  • Sonic Youth as an American, post-punk, tribute band! Lol! Surprising listening to it now, 23 years removed!

  • @blimao86 TRIBUTE band? O.o

  • @PsychadelicElephant agreed :)

  • ,)

  • quit arguing about bogus shit and just dig the tune! Sonik Life!

  • Hey we're not old damnit!! I'm only 32. I refuse to consider myself old just because music has sucked donkey dick since 1995. There has been a disruption of the 'ten-year good music cycle".I don't know what happened, but we're in some sort of weird cock eating, crappy music vortex right now.

  • @bulkdive I'm 48. I totally agree about the crappy music vortex.................

  • so many memories, fuck! im getting so fucking old. i never thougth i could became this shit head sir

    .

  • Kim's taped finger hahaha

  • I feel like the best way to put sonic youth into comprehendible terms is to compare them to painters. There are some real brilliant technical painters that get everything right and get the scales, proportions, techniques perfectly and have realistic art and then there are painters that use long free brush strokes. There is a real freedom about that way and something insanely romantic about it; that ability to disconnect from the convention and still make it beautiful. That's sonic youth

  • I own every Sonic Youth album. I can't seem to find one single song I don't like.

  • A WEBOOO ESTA CHINGONA LA ROLAAA :D

  • rockn roll mothafuckass

  • lol at Shelly's glasses

  • Sonic Youth had the coolest music videos

  • To the 9 people who don't like this, are you brain dead or something?

  • i like that they didn't use the studio version of this song, it gives it a really cool vibe.

  • @archer1949 the 90's? this was the 80's!

  • @somabc This first came out in the 80's, but I discovered this album and this band in 1991. So its the 90's to me.

  • I came here for Sonic Youth, not a shit vocal reality show, and NOT Foo Fuckers. So please get rid of it.

  • Daydream and Dirty are my favorites, gotta love em

  • 0:05 You talkin' to me?? travis bickle for sure

  • LOL...0:05 DO YOU WANT ME TO SHOW YOU TOUGH?! I"LL SHOW YOU TOUGH!!

  • Exclusive session and interview with New York rock band Sonic Youth on Rock Feedback

    youtube.com/user/rockfeedback?feature=mhum#p/u/11/tBdPB7iyDgk

  • all music is valid and meaningful. anything can be music.

  • Sonic Youth... fucking great what they can do with guitars!

  • lots of energy here.

  • @cosmicrider287 yeah lots

  • I don't understand why everybody hates VEVO so much... At least the videos are here to see them when you want to. So you have to sit through a 14 second commercial....? Big deal. Try to remember the 80s when you would hope and pray that a video like this would get played on a show like 120 minutes only to be disappointed by another Natalie Merchent clip or something.

  • Sonic Youth is very... inspiring.

  • It poops itself because it is angry.

  • Oh VEVO tells em that Avril Lavine's new album is called Goodbye Lullaby, is she finally going to stop making music forever?

  • rolling stones greatest guitar songs.

  • I used to play guitar like this... when I was 14 yrs old.

  • @PittsDick77 cool story bro ^^

  • @PittsDick77 Bet you wish you could turn back the clock :)

  • I don't wanna be the old guy wallowing in nostalgia, but I REALLY miss the '90s

  • @archer1949

i dont wanna be the young kiddo wishing he was born earlier to fully enjoy the '90s

  • @archer1949 me 2 homie

  • @archer1949 hey dude the album(Daydream Nation) this song came off of came out in the 80's (1988)

  • @archer1949 ME TOO!!!! the '00s sucked royal dick...hopefully the '10s don't blow wang as well but I'm not holding my breath.

  • @archer1949 hmmm... well, this is from '88 so it's actually the 80's

  • @archer1949 I am with you man

  • @archer1949 Hey man the 90's was a good decade for music. I'm now the "old guy" myself but I didn't even come of age until the late 90's and that music was mostly shit too. Early 90's/late 89's was a great time for music and culture.

  • @archer1949 To bad Daydream Nation came out in 1988

  • @Radiohead17321 But I didn't hear it until 1991. So to me, it's the 1990's.

  • @Radiohead17321 Why the hell is that

  • @Arthounot That dude said he missed the 90's and i said it came out in 1988

  • @archer1949 I REALLY miss the 80's, when this album came out.

  • @rockemsockeification I was a bit too young in the 80's to appreciate this,

  • @archer1949 So no music before your birth for you.

  • @archer1949

Too bad the video is from '88.

  • @klyona OWNED

  • @klyona too bad 88 is pretty much the 90's

  • @bawbomb not really... depends how you look at it. I was 8 years old in 88, but in 92 I had already my taste for music, I was a teenager at that time.

  • @cauluk i guess but thats because you were 8 years old lol so. strictly speaking the music from 88 was pretty much the music from the ~early~ 90's

  • @klyona I seriously like that comment every time I watch this video

  • @archer1949 ther newer stuff is good too. " Rather Ripped" is a great album

  • @archer1949 i miss the 90's even though i was born in 97 but now i have to grow up with kesha and whatever

  • @TheSkyLineBand1 Just block that stuff out as much as you can! Keep on with the old good stuff! :)

  • who the fuck gave thurston a driver license?? lol

  • wow a vid!! sooo kooool!

  • this is sick......

  • Cheers for the post!

  • He's not from New york, he's from Florida

  • FUCK THIS VEVO SHIT

  • Magic Johnson

  • wtf do you know ladytroner???? you should feel ashamed to use ladytron in your nickname... they love Sonic Youth for sure you sucker!!!!

  • @ladytroner Fuck you!

  • @ladytroner

    0/10

  • @ladytroner - must try harder.

  • Oh my rad-sauced pants with video is some sweet mother truckin' shit all.

  • Comment removed

  • i love the part from 0:00 to 3:31

  • Thurston is well hot in this vid.

  • vevo sucks

  • does anybody feel like Sonic Youth were more than using noise to make music... were actually capturing, at least to some point, the ambient and the atmosphere in which they lived in? i mean this guys come from new york city, the most overpopulated, noisy, trashy, chaotic city in the world... maybe they were imitating their conception of new york into their music

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth NYC is not by far the most overpopulated, noisy, trash either chaotic city nor even within the States... Have u ever been to El Cairo, Tokyo, New Delhi or Pekin... Dude, they´re hell on Earth... Humansouls por doquier looking for theirselves and feeding their guts and their children to survive... NYC is a fuckin´paradise compared to the others... These guys are just a bunch of nice boys and girls who pretend to make music.. just white noise.. Merciless.. Bach is the music.

  • @murcia1975 well no i havent been to any of those places and im sure their veeery stressing to live in and SY doesnt pretend, they make music, different and sometimes abusive music....but great music :3

  • @murcia1975 - To be fair mate, you think Kanye West is a "great artist" so....

  • @tobietera I don´t even know who he is... But I know Bach´s music and he´s the father of the music.. Sublime.. There´s nothing compared to THAT.

  • @murcia1975 "pretend to make music", what's that supposed to mean? bach is the sound of the 18th century, this is the sound of the 20th century... and luckily they don't cancel each other out

  • @murcia1975 You totally missed the point there

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth

    such a duchy comment..

    they just roooock!

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth No. They started as No-Wave which was essentially a protest against the bullshit pop music of the 70's and early 80's. They were noisy because of Glenn Branca and the noisescape guitar orchesta's he used to do, which is how Lee and Thurston met. I understand where you're coming from but idk might be a stretch

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth You can make connections to anything if you look hard enough, but i do feel like they were more than using noise to make music.

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth Thats one of the best comments i've read on YouTube

  • @RockMarried dangit now i have to find what IamTHeSchorchedEarth wrote...

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth ah here mate. what you smokin??? but i do agree that their guitaring can be right down and dirty sometimes

  • @trevorgarford not much, just blueberry hooka from time to time and weed :3

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth impressionism in its purest form

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth i think you smoke too much weed but its nice and a proof of intelligence ... i mean making theories like this

  • @saumonnn i do smoke weed, once a month :)

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth i do smoke everyday ^^'

  • @saumonnn more than weed i do shrooms but as long as youre not putting shit up your arm or nose youll be fine :3

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth you've obviously never been to any city outside of the U.S., NY is far from the most overpopulated/noisy whatever/

  • @evange03 actually im not even american, im panamanian, and ive been to new york, miami, london and toronto, but i still think that new york is pretty chaotic

and panama is pretty chaotic too, thats why they call it little Manhattan

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth You just took the words out of my thoughts. I became so addicted to listening to Sonic Youth in the underground while going to work that I can't do it at home anymore. I remember I felt like I've drown into it the first time I've experienced it. The ability itself to make this kind of experience possible to a human being is beyond genius without a doubt.

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth What? You mean like The Velvet Underground? Yeah, probably.

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth new york city may be the most overpopulated, noisy, trashy, chaotic city in the US but clearly you haven't been to Mumbai.

  • @sieteocho nop i havent... and for your username, asumo que tu hablas español... or am i wrong?

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth 其实我是个华人 but a fan of Andrew Hill

  • @sieteocho stop trying to impress everyone by arrantly showing off what can easily be perceived as pseudo-intelligence. hubris is not becoming on anyone.

  • @kylefjeldheim You mean "arrogantly"

  • @sieteocho I don't in fact. Arrant is an adjective that means downright, thorough or unmitigated. In terms that you can understand it means purposeful, deliberate, and not subtle. Better luck next time retard

  • @kylefjeldheim That's a great word to add to my vocabulary. In the meantime I'll let others decide who the arrant one here is. Nothing more to be said.

  • @sieteocho ha. clever. I expected a comment like that. apparently you didn't recognize the fact that I was mocking you. Congratulations, you are now retarded two comments in a row

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth Well Lee did say he didn't think their music could have started anywhere the same way as in New York.

  • @PABrawr the atmosphere influences the mind of the artist, and in the case of new york, what came out was bliss and noise

  • @IamTheScorchedEarth "maybe" they were imitating?

  • @Arthounot yeah they could just been a bunch of noisy new yorkers wit luck or actual revolutionaries, who knows :3

  • brilliant, punk rock at its BEST

  • oh how i love this band

  • Does vevo own the rights to all sonic youth video?

  • говнори...

  • BECHOVA..NEW NIRVANA,OF,,BRAZIL..FUN,,FUN..FUN..GRUNGE,,CHECKIN.IN YOUTUBE,,

  • way better than expressway to ur skull but it still sucks!

    listen to tool!!!

  • @0nlyReaLGOth You're a tool yourself :P

  • @znikacz thx for the compliment faggot

  • @0nlyReaLGOth hahaha you are just giving more views for Sonic Youth's vids which just makes them more popular. So you should probably just leave. We all have different music taste and you just need to understand that.

  • @Kool4Sure hahaha i dont care if SY gets more clicks. i doesnt make them better.

and i know that we all have different music taste thats why im commenting on this. to say that this is not my taste of music. but ur right im gonna leave.

  • @0nlyReaLGOth i listen to tool skinny puppy and sonic youth, so go slit your wrists you emo faggot, music isnt about how much makeup you wear its about the fucking music

  • @GuruBabadesh haha ur comment is odd.

"music [...] its about the fuckin music"

if music would be about how much how much makeup i wear, it would be about nothing. and being emo(what im not)is not about cutting ur wrists.

lol i still like what u wrote for some reason^^

  • @0nlyReaLGOth 12 year olds shouldn't be allowed near computers. why are people getting up in arms about some child that is obviously in a goth-dick measuring contest on youtube? let this kid just be ignored.

  • ...Kim Gordon. *drool*

  • @dark3rbol Oh yeah.

  • Awesome song.

  • @FUNNYDUDEFILMS was that faggot right about giving your aids result coming back postive aswell?

  • @HeadlessT1111 that doesn't make sense

  • @FUNNYDUDEFILMS Ya... for the record. I wouldnt advise drunk commenting....

  • These kids and their music!.......1988?

  • man, thurston is tall D=

  • I love Kim, she's such a music goddess!

  • Vevo make all music commerciall this sucks..

  • I saw this first time on MTV Europe in 1996 late at night. Lee giving a pat to his guitar changed my life.
