This film is incorrect. 6 of Odysseus' men were eaten by Scylla, not 3. Also, the men did not encounter Charybdis, because Odysseus chose Scylla. The rest of Odysseus' men were killed by Zeus after leaving the island of Thrinacia, where they ate the cattle of the sun god, Lord Helios.
i watched this in english as well as some other ppl did. and apparently this movie is inacurate. well like what harpiyon said and u see all Odysseus' men die from Charybdis, but the remaining ppl in his crew died because they ate some cattle that belonged 2 a god.... bad idea.
THIS PLACE IN THE EARTH IS SAID THAT IS BETWEEN THE ISLAND OF SICILIA AND ITALY IS A STRECH PASSAGE .I KNOW BECAUSE I HAVE SAIL A COUPLE OF TIMES THERE WITH THE NAVIGATOR OF THE SEAS
Scylla was once a beautiful nymph who was fancied by Gluacus the sea god, but she wanted nothing to do with him. He turned to Circe, the sea witch and asked for help, but she fell in love with Glaucus, and pined for him, but he did not love her. In anger, she turned on Scylla and poured an elixer into the cave where she bathed and it turned her into the monster we are admiring right now,,,another life ruined by a horny god!
@ccipollini1984 yeah those Greek Gods had many flaws, they were arrogant, vengeful & horny: Zeus & Poseidon produced many Demi-god bastards with mortal women (often disguised as a swan, a bull etc.), heroes like Hercules, Perseus etc. are said to be such Demi-gods
those Greek Gods were immortal & powerful and still, they were acting exactly like humans. they´re almost sympathetic, at least you understand their motivations & ways of thinking
According to mythology, Scylla was once a beautiful nymph who was admired by the Glaucus. He would visit her everyday in a cove she bathed in and when she would not return his advances, Glaucua went to the sea witch Circe and asked for help, but she also fell for Glaucus, but his heart was to Scylla. As a result. angry Circe concocted a brew that she poured into Scyllas coe that turned her into a monster.
@ccipollini1984 Wow interesting, I didn´t know that. I only knew that Scylla was female. What a romantic, yet sad story. And I suppose Glaucus, the man who loved her once, is another Glaucus than the one who fought in the Trojan War on side of the Trojans?
BTW I think they made a good job in this movie, both Scylla and Charybdis look very, very scary.
@prickdude1 Guess they didnt have the time/money to do a scene where they kill Helios' cattle and have Zeus lightning bolt them...admittedly, being eaten by Scylla is a much cooler death.
This movie is not accurate... Oddyseus had to make a choice... Charybda or Scylla... he chose Scylla becose he knew he is going to loose his troops one way or another. The difference was, that if he chose Charybda, everyone would die. He chose Scylla and "only" 6 men of his crew died. Thats what the book say... :P
@TheCristianalvarez According to Homer´s Odyssey it was not a cave but a narrow passage with Scylla on one side & Charybdis on the other. It was the only passage and it was so narrow that sailors had to choose, would they come close to Scylla or to Charybdis? When she was hungry, Scylla could kill 6 men at once: she had 6 heads & snached 1 man with every head. Charybdis on the other hand, could swallow a whole ship. Hence most sailors got closer to Scylla, i.e. they chose the lesser of 2 evils.
@harpiyon what version did you read? We just went over the odyssey in my freshmen high school class, and that choice was between the scylla and some rocks that would've crashed the ship at an intersection. charybdis came later and was avoided?
nice vid, but it's not correct. in the Odyssey Odysseus could choose between Scylla and Charybdis. He prefered Scylla, as he would only lose 6 men in this case, compared to everyone when he picked Charybdis.
@ParalimniVoice Haha, i was just thinking the same. If they remade the Odyssey, I could watch it over and over. :P I could watch THIS one a couple times over but I don't have the movie. I only watch certain scenes in my Literature class. My teacher won't let us watch scenes with Calypso tho.. apparently they show some "stuff" in the movie version. Or something along those lines.. Everytime we're assigned to read another chapter/section i can't help but read ahead. Too bad we're at the end now D:
Do you mind telling me where I can download this scene? I need it for an English assignment - we have to make a parody of this scene, and I was planning on using the actual movie scene... with some alterations. X3.
If this movie was remade wit the current technology and visual effects stated by someone....i can see this movie to be pretty good...specially this part!! :o
@INeedAYTAccount4 yes i think the same, but in my opinion, scylla should be remaked half woman half monster, just as the legend, cause this monsters looks like a giant plant. Maybe some scylla like medusa from clash of the titans remake. Although this movie is great the part where they are entering the cave
Scylla is the shizzle. The end creature is called Charydbis. Im reading in the second Percy Jackson book "Sea of Monsters" and am at the part where they find Scylla and Charydbis. Made me remember this movie and decided to peep it out :D
@Cplblue Haha!!! That is wat im doing now!! xD DAmn forgot all bout this movie...thought i watch this part again...But no dead Confederate soldiers or the USS Birmingham though!!! :P
@Cplblue haha nice! It seems that there are so many people nowadays that consider themselves well-read after reading captain underpants and the twilight series.
@Cplblue ::( I know... Recently picked up GeorgeR.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones" it's the first in his series called Of Fire and Ice .. If you're into all this mythological fantasy I'd highly reccomend it, the level of verisimilitude is amazing, it's such a beautiful universe to get lost in :P
@lolpocalypse My friend is on his newest novel. He really digs it and told me to read it. I guess I should, since the HBO series, it's been getting a lot of new found praise.
the thing in the water? thats Charybdas... its a whirlpool, Odysseus had to either sail past the whirl pool or Scylla the 6 headed monster... he chose the monster.
but in the original book, they never were taken in by the whirlpool, they only had trouble with charybdas... your best off reading the book, its wayyyy wayyyyy better.
I have one question, its just why does scylla look like a venus fly trap instead of dog heads beneath her waist? Did the director just want it that way? Thanks for putting it up!!!! :D
@TomTom6055 it actually shouldnt even look like dog heads. it should be pale blue skin, black hair, sharp teeth, yellow eyes, has 6 heads, and the rest of the body is a tentacles
@shindouhikaru43 it depends on which version you read, one pic had dogs beneth her waist, another said she looked like a fleshy spider with like six heads. They are different versions, either way thanks for replying!! :D
