  • two thumbs up!!!

  • Just thought id share my experience of scab resistances on my 2 varieties.

    Apple Scrumptious - very Susceptible

    Apple Sunset - Very resistant

The trees are next to each other, and none have have any fungicide. The Apple scrumptious is a great tasting variety, and im awaiting tasting of apple sunset.

  • PS I intend to put up a number of short videos looking at the characteristics of individual apple varieties I grow as they become ripe.

May I encourage other small and backyard to do the same? Sharing from actual experience although imperfect can be very helpful. When we started out it was very difficult to get information, even with the web is not easy.

Bear in mind that USA and European apples have differences, for example Cortland is popular stateside but unknown in Britain.

  • Five Stars!!

  • Hey Stephen do you know the resistance of these three types I have (dont know if the spelling is correct)? Pippin, Gayla, and Fuji, Rome. Thank you sir.

  • Damon, according to Morgan and Richards apple book, Gala (can't find an apple called Gayla) is prone to scab, Fuji and Rome Beauty it doesn't say.

I can't find an apple called Pippin, usually the word 'pippin' is a suffix, as in Allington's Pippin, Cox's Orange Pippin, Saint Edmund's Pippin etc, so I can't identify this apple.

I share mainly what I learned the hard way in my orchard. Reliable information on easy to grow apples for the small grower is hard to find. Video rsponses welcome!

  • Hi Stephen,

Great video yet again ... a real education thank you. Which root stock do you normally use?

    Cheers

  • All these apple trees are on MM106. I have a few cider aples on M26 and MM111.

  • Thank you ... I know now what I'm looking for.

    Cheers

  • Thanks, however please bear in mind I am just this enthusiastic amateur and what I have to say, although sincere and as true as I can make it, will never be more than part of the story

Having disclaimed, it is a hard fact that some varieties of apple are much more-or less-susceptible to this miserable disease apple scab that others, and enquiries should be made before choosing varieties

And PRESERVE THOSE HERITAGE VARIETIES with their irreplacable DNA representing our ancestors care
