The jap voices, both of them here, do sound generic. Snake's voice is fitting, yet ordinary. Certainly inferior to the outstanding rugged charisma of the american voice acting for him.

The american version feels like they were trying too hard to be cool but at end of the day they sound cheesy as hell, American voice acting sucks donkey balls while Japanese voice acting is one of the best in the world, Mexican voice acting is amazing too and I think gringoland could learn a lot from them.

He does sound very dynamic either way you slice it. But the Japanese gives him a little more of an edge, imo.

Yes. As for MGS1, he said that he liked hearing them speak in english as that's the language they'd speak if this was real, but he never really said that which voice track he prefered.

But for MGS2, in a japanese interview he did say that he was disappointed with how the english VA turned out.

Both English and Japanese voices are perfect for Snake. For English, David Hayter gives Snake's voice and mannerism a "cool factor," while Otsuka Akio gives Snake a "man of men" voice. Laymen's terms, they both rule.

Meryl's voice is the same of Olga in MGS2,they did that on purpose because when Snake saw Olga he tought he had seen Meryl,this was lost in the English version since Debi Mae West didn't voice Olga

Kyoko Terase, who voiced Meryl in the Japanese version also played Olga in the Japanese version of MGS2

But in the English version they're played by different people, Debi Mae West played Meryl and Vanessa Marshall played Olga.
