This series is painfully one sided. Where do these people buy these dogs? These dogs would be eaten alive in any legitimate, reputable show ring. Failure to differentiate the idiot breeding down the street from somebody who goes to great lengths to AVOID these problems does not provide an accurate picture at all. Stop parading this video around as the end all be all on purebred dog. At most it teaches buyer beware, choose breeders carefully.
this is another example of people breeding animals in order to make money or pride for themselves. people do the same with cattle, goats, sheep, cats, horses, etc.when are we going to learn there should be limits to these things?

Poor doggies. :( I never liked the idea of pedigree dogs. All some people care about are their stupid dog shows... not the dogs themselves. I remember reading about a dalmatian-pointer crossback project to breed out the bladder stone problems with dalmatians and I thought it was brilliant. More breeders should consider doing something like that. No dog is completely "purebred" anyway.
We know of 3 Teacup Yorkies that all had 1 leg amputed - after watching this series of videos, we now realize that these dogs are being breed smaller and smaller and now they are so small, their little bone structure is frail.
This video shockingly opened my eyes and raised new meaning to "buyer beware". Things that I thought were part of the breed (boxer - pushed in nose, german shepherd - sloped, king charles cavalier - small head, dashhound - short legs) now make me very upset when I see it. If we decide to buy a purebred, we will do much more research and demand to see parents and know about grandparents - what we see will guide our decision. We are now aware and thank this video series.

As I watch this video with my dog (purebreed Rottie) I am sad that pedigree dogs are put through this kind of suffering. I always thought that the purpose of a dog was function not beauty. In my opinion i would want to buy a rott that would look as closely as a Rott as possible however, my problem with the whole showing dogs concept is not the "show" part (I enjoy them) however the lengths people go to have the perfect dog and not aware or even care for the dogs health. It shameful. True?
I now own 5 of the most adorable little doggies, ranging from celtic terrier, shih tzu, jack russle terrier, Japanese chin, and I have sucessfully interbred them until I bought a pure bred Japanese chin........ seizures back to back, none stop...... I was to upset and incensed...... I would never ever buy a purebred again!!!!!!!!!!!! And I can elaborate on every precious memory I have with each and every one of them!
Why on God's green earth would you buy or breed a poor animal that will have genetic defects? Seeing them suffer a poor quality of life... seems totally insane to me, but then greed reigns supreme even at the cost of their suffering. Where is the humane society in this game of playing God. I hear soon we will be sharing animal DNA; but I am sure they have started it now.....
When you breed a race horse, you look for straight lines, confirmation and a big heart to run with pain...... Why breed a dog that has a bent spine, and overload of body on short legs that cannot sustain the weight and length of their body? I have experienced one purebred so to say.... I simply adored him but sadly he had back to back seizures at 2 years old.and I had to have him put down...........
It's a question of who you believe. A vet who has experience in treating injured animals, or a dog breeder, who wants the creme de la creme so she/he can have a nice looking trophy in their cabinet or to sell their pups for £500. And thats for starters with some of them. Don't believe me? Check your local papers classifieds for KC registered dogs for sale..
Damn, i was shocked to see how mutated some of these breeds have become. The German Sheppard they call 'correct' looks severely messed up. The dog i saw that was a winner of one of the dog shows looked like he could hardly walk properly. His back legs looked like they were shaking, and the dog obviously wouldn't be able to function normally. I'm amazed someone would think a dog like that is a good standard to follow. Im not sure which is more inbred, the dogs or the owner's.
I know my granddad had 2 german shepherds both looked like the show dogs, he probably got them from a shelter cause he is not rich enough to buy one from a breeder. I knew even when I was little that the legs looked and worked a bit oddly.
I can't believe the BBC would put extremely distressing scenes on their programs, but if the BBC don't tell you these kinds of stuff then who will? I bet it was more difficult for the people who choose to start digging around to find all this out than the viewers.
@maple158 the initial idea behind 'shows' was good. Finding and promoting the best of the breed. It's what it's turned into that's the problem. It's turned into a popularity contest and as high school taught most of us, being popular doesn't always mean being healthy. It's time the shows starting promoting what they were meant to promote and the judges were trained how to pick out the healthy dogs.
This documentary is shocking! O_o I knew that practically every breed had some health issues - but I never imagined it was that serious. I assumed that, if things were that bad, people wouldn't just allow it to happen - but they only care about how their dogs look. They don't think about their health, how incredibly sad... Those breeders should be ashamed of theirselves! I'm never going to buy a pedigree dog, I refuse to support that horrible business.

"The dogs are clearly in agony" . . . (refering to the spaniel).
I hate to state the obvious, but Old Yeller that dog and put it out of it's misery. What's cruel is keeping the dog alive. I know it's hard, but it's best. I had to put down my dog when it developed bone cancer. Yes I cried but I'd rather my girl be dead than in pain.
(May you rest in peace, Sonya, you sweet tempered Rottweiler.)
We have an AKC rough collie that was bred from a farm collie and a house dog. He's far too big to be a show collie but he's healthy and robust and a good pal. Last year a Australian Cattle Dog X turned up on our porch and DNA tests indicate he ACD and Belgian and has grown into a gorgeous male with the best of both breeds. Both boys are neutered and AKC registered, one as a Canine Partner, Would I ever show a dog? Never. I don't think breed standards are admirable at all!
these animals are just used as comodities, there owners make money off them with no obvious care to there actually health, whats with the ridgeback breeders?killing puppies with out spinabifida,it dont make any sense, same thing with the pugs and german sheperds, look at that working german sheperd, thats a proper police dog, then look at the freak in the show room, tell me could that chace down criminals and take um down like police dogs should.no it wud trip over itsself.fuck the kennel club
That is aweful! (not the movie itself but the issue it discusses) I was aware of the health problems in pedigree dogs, but I didn't know it was so bad. The poor dogs. :( I don't plan on getting a dog. If I did, I ought to think about getting a nice healthy mutt.
This is completely f*%ked up. The most intelligent, devoted and HEALTHY dog I've ever owned was a mongrel. She was part Australian Kelpie, part Border Collie, and part mystery dog. She had zero medical problems and was a treasure. Boycott pedigree 'things', bred just to make money. If you want a dog, rescue a puppy from the pound that is on death row. They know you rescued them, and are devoted to you 1,000%. And someone should smash that judge's legs up and see how he likes living in pain.
There's a reason why Bulldogs weren't meant to mate naturally-and they shouldn't be bred at all in my opinion. That's just more mutations and inherited diseases to come up.
Breeding can actually produce healthier dogs if health is the agenda.
Breeding used to produce healthy, functional and in certain aspects superior dogs. This is why the Greyhound for example can out run every other animal on earth. Even the cheetah can only beat a GH for a few seconds. After that it is all about the GH.
When "beauty pageant" breeding became the status quo is when everything went wrong...
@MandyLionWWIII , that's not how genetics works. A faster dog is not necessarily a better or healthier or more capable dog. It's just faster. (By the way, aerotechway1 was talking about bulldogs, not greyhounds... I doubt you'll see any bulldog outrun a cheetah). Only in their environment can we tell which dogs are best fit. We should be wary of any artificial environment that requires spending great quantites of cash to maintain, as that is not sustainable over the long term.
Actually that IS how it works. A sick dog will NEVER be the fastest, strongest or most enduring dog. If that was possible you'd see people with disabilities win the olympics. AND NO ONE said a bulldog outruns a cheetah so I have no idea where you pulled that out from. I have no intention trying to convince you of the painfully obvious so I will end the conversation here. I have no stake in you believing in facts... The only thing I am interested in is helping what I love most: Dogs
@MandyLionWWIII I THINK YOU'RE RIGHT. BULLDOGS ARE NOT HEALTHY BY ANY MEANS. MY FAMILY HAS CAVALIER KING CHARLES CAVALIER SPANIELS AND THEY HAVE AD HEALTH ISSUES BUT ONE LIVED 16 YEARS AND WE GOT THE DOG FROM A RESPECTED BREEDER. i THINK NEWFOUNDLAND DOGS ARE PROBABLY THE BEST AS A COMPANION OR PET BUT THEY HAVE HEALTH PROBLEMS THAT KILL THEM VERY EARLY.
Oh Lord have mercy. The GS looks like half Hyena....is that what they were going for? I have a mutt who's sire is a GS, and he [the sire] certainly looks NOTHING like those.... Looks so very odd. WHY would they [show dog owners] even DESIRE such a stupid look such as this? Absolute morons. I suppose common sense isn't common any more, isit? :( Poor critters.
Jesus Christ, those GSDs slouch like hyenas! I know one Shepherd that looked exactly like that when he walked. He's 12 and has hip displasia. He can't even go to the bathroom without his owner's help and is now in a wheelchair. Glad the police don't have to rely on those poor things. A healthy working dog is better. There must be movement among responsible breeders to breed dogs without health problems that can do their job efficiently. What's the point of a Shepherd that can't walk to herd?
Thumbs up. I do want to get a purebred dog, but I'd do some heavy research about what kinds of health problems are common in certain dogs and find breeders that specialize in producing long term healthy animals vs breeders that want a specific look. I know from looking that many breeders don't worry about the long term health. It's a rare breeder who does.
This makes me so sad that I adopted a purebred Italian Greyhound. I hope she doesn't ever get sick like this... My heart would break. I think I'll just stick to a mutt from the shelter next time :(
@SerafinaP86 I think that you take your chances with a mutt from a shelter as well. We did have a mutt and she was the best, we didn't lose her to disease, at 11 years of age, she was stolen from us.
@wilerman Pedigree and Iams food are not healthy food. They contain corns and are poor in proteins (meat source). I believe in healthy food. My opinion : anything like EVO foods or Orijen are the best.
Its just gone too far with the breeding now. Crufts are denying any problems too. I commented on a video they have on their channel of my pugs father winning best of breed 2010. I said something about "So much for healthy dogs! Thats the father of my epileptic Pug!". There is my Pug, waking me up some mornings at 6am, screeching, rigid, absolutely SOAKED in his own urine and scared afterwards. He is SUFFERING because of the stupid breed standards. Yet there is crufts hiding from the truth!
my Nan's got a daschund thats 2 foot long, strong as an ox, chews thew metal fences and once ate 6 chickens in one go, proves that the real dogs are superior
I love visualizing a dachshund with the strength of a 2000 pound animal devouring metal and no less than 6 chickens in one sitting!
There really seems to be absolutely no limit to how stupid people can be. If a dachshund even ate one entire chicken in one sitting he would die! A 200 pound english mastiff would take 4 days to eat 6 chickens but a 30 pound wimpy little dachshund eats that in on sitting? Lol! Please lord throw brains from heaven
@MandyLionWWIII I am not joking, it ate part of a rubber chicken and survived, and it weighs much more than 30lbs, it did kill 6 chicken but didn't eat them all, and it did get through the fence, we gave it a bone, and it ate it, it's probably a deformability or growth problem, or maybe not a 'pure' dachshund but it's real you have to see it too believe it, hardly wimpy, dangerous if anything...
The thing that really annoys me is knowing how many beautiful healthy cross bred dogs get destroyed in pounds, while people spend thousands on purchasing pedigree dogs simply for the desire for a dog with a particular look.
This is EXACTLY one of the main reasons why I have cats! I'm a cat person totally anyway but still...Even pedigree cats are MUCH healthier and natural than pretty much any dog you can think of.Except persian perhaps, I would never get one of those OR a modern siamese. That's where human's have definitely gone TOO far with cats as well. It's just incredibly sad. I was crying watching this and I don't even care that much for dogs! But here you have animals in pain just because of selfish humans.
This is upsetting and horrible, but not shocking. Why? Puppy mills. They don't give a damn about inbreeding, genetic disorders and diseases, the health of the dogs, etc. But people, being people, love puppies and don't even stop to think about where the puppies in pet stores came from. What we need are: 1. Gpod, solid breeders who are 100% interested, concerned, and educated in breeding healthy dogs and 2. More people to adopt loving dogs in animal shelters instead of buying a dog from a store.
Thank you so much for posting this! I've been involved with animal welfare for years and I've never supported confirmation based breeding. I am so glad that this program was made.
I hate how so-called dog-lovers promote dog breeding while they realize that the inbreeding is killing such beautiful dogs. Also, there are thousands of great dogs shelters that need homes. Stop breeding while homeless animals are being killed.
Only a healthy dog is beautiful dog? I agree, but this is the whole dillemma, beauty is not ehats important! Sick dogs can also be great companions! OF COURSE, THEY SHOULD NOT BE BRED. Breeding (if at all done) should strive for health, but it doesn't mean the animals that have already been ruined by other's stupid breeding and 'beauty' ideals are not beautiful in their souls. They deserve a good life, too (spayed/neutered.)
Of course a sick dog is still a beautiful soul but...
It kills me to see a sick animal. And I cannot understand how someone could breed a sick animal on purpose because they see the sickness as beauty.
When I see a happy and healthy dog my soul sings... It makes me smile...
When I see a suffering dog it breaks my heart and I want to take care of it. But to me watching any animal suffer is NEVER beautiful... It is just sad. Sad to see these beautiful souls betrayed by us...
@MandyLionWWIII Only a healthy dog is beautiful dog? I don't agree, but this is the whole dilemma, beauty is not thats important! Sick dogs can also be great companions! OF COURSE, THEY SHOULD NOT BE BRED. There is no reason why breeding cannot be conducted to pursue both beauty and function. I have been breeding and showing Papillons for nearly 30 years. The Papillon is prized as one of the most athletic toy dogs ever. I have never had a case of patella luxation in my breeding program, which is all too common in small dogs.
I do have a serious issue with some of the footage of this BBC special for the fact that they do not distinguish a good breeder from a bad breeder.
You being a breeder and dog show person does not exactly give you a whole lot of credit here... If you actually admitted to something being wrong here you would probably have to give up your silly beauty pageants and in your case your business as well.
Breeding should be done the way it was done before dog beauty pageants existed. Dogs should be bred for function and let form follow.
It is proven beyond a shadow of doubt that breeding for these ridiculous standards does not work.
We finally just got a shepherd that is built how a shepherd should be, an animal that can WORK! Show rings just make everything go to the extreme and its really sad.
Why can't people go to the shelter and get dogs that are already alive? By breeding a dog you essentially kill the one in the shelter. People are fucking stupid and it pisses me off. Just because the dog at the shelter perhaps isn't as cute, he/she provides the same amount of love if not more. I rescued 3 of my dogs from the street and the fourth one was from the shelter and I wouldn't have it any other way. Love them to death. This video makes me sick. Fucking bastards.
Apparently you love dogs, and I can see that so therefore you should know that there is no such thing as responsible breeding even if those breeders are essentially good people who love their animals. I don't have to tell you what breeding is but for those that don't, it is to go against nature. Let me give you a hint. There is no perfect breed. The closest thing to perfection is that which is created by nature.
I understand your point but I don't agree with you when you say that there is no place for responsible breeding. Long before people started breeding for these ridiculous ideals of "beauty" dogs were being bred to perform certain tasks. ONLY a healthy dog can be an effective working dog. This is why health problems in domesticated dogs were virtually non existent back in those days.
Responsible breeding produces healthy animals which can perform certain tasks incredibly well.
@MandyLionWWIII I can tell you from looking at purebred breeders in the US online, it's rare to find on their website that they care about the health problems with the breed they are working with. But the rare gems are the breeders that will tell you exactly what common health problems their breed may face and how they effectively work to ensure that they are producing the healthiest examples of their breed.
When you breed a dog for a certain task is exceeds any other creatures ability in that field by a ridiculous degree. Think of what the Bloodhound can do with his nose... Way beyond what the Wolf is capable off. Look at the Greyhound... Way faster than a Wolf...
What I am saying is that domesticated breeds have a right to be. I understand your anger at irresponsible showdog breeders. But I disagree with letting the domesticated dog die just because it seems like an easy fix
No, the breeding shouldn't be completely outlawed, but it does need to be much more controlled with far fewer accepted registrations and therefore fewer breeders because why breed if you can't get your dogs registered? And the akc and kennel club need to amend their breed standards so that problems such as that plaguing the german shepherd can be bred out.
Do you know how many human lives have been saved by the superior sense of smell of the Bloodhound...? Bloodhound can find people under circumstances where wild canines would fail miserably. Because Bloodhounds have been specifically breed to have the most powerful sense of smell in the world of dogs.
I am sure that if one of YOUR loves ones were found and saved by one of these wonderful domesticated and well bred dogs you would thank GOD for their existence.
This is a global problem with pedigree breeds. There are entirely too many "breeders" out there breeding for the buck and not for the good of the breeds.
True, there are certain genetic illnesses or common problems that go along with each breed. IRRESPONSIBLE breeders are the reason it is getting so bad. People just breeding and breeding to get a certain look or just so they can sell the puppies. Each breed has certain things they need to be tested for. Breeders need to be responsible and knowledgable about the breed they are handling. If more breeders were like this, these problems wouldn't be so serious.
Hybridinformation - Your research has been tainted. If you watched the full clip you'd have noted at the end that Springer Spaniels are often afflicted with an enzyme deficiency that ONLY occurs in Springer Spaniels. Since the likelihood that there are no crossbred Springers is pretty slim, that means that the gene is recessive. Both parents must carry the recessive gene and both parents must pass on the recessive gene, giving a 1 in 4 chance of offspring with the deficiency.
i have a cav king charles spaniel called Lloyd he is the best thing to ever happen to me i got him 1 week befor this program aired i have now spent the remaining time worring. the vet says he is ok and he is not a pure ped. im getting another cav king charles spaniel in 2 weeks time and i hope they both saty healthy :(
This is the product of irresponsible breeders and owners. Responsible breeders test their dogs for heriditary problems before breeding and spay/neuter is they carry them.
"Mutts are healthier" is a myth. Any dog can have the health problems of it's parents.
Inbreeding and line breeding are two different things. Line breeding is breeding a pup to a family member 3-5 generations back. Inbreeding is anything closer.
AKC doesn't mean quality. I've done my research, it's time you do yours.
@HybridInformation Mutts do tend to be healthier. Doesn't mean they all are. Just generally speaking. If you think about it, it works the same way with humans. If both parents carry a gene/disease/ailment, whether it's active or dormant it's more likely to be passed down to their offsprings. With only one parent carrying a certain gene, there's less chance.
i have 3 purebreed dogs, 1 yorkie and 2 pekegnes. my yorkie is very healthy, but has a leg tendon problem, my male peke's hind legs just worbabes when he walks, and my female peke has a collisped traciea and paw issiues. My family has been lucky that our dogs are pretty much health and arnt surring form something horrible, but all the inbreeding is bad. long before i watched this video i know my the small size of yorkie werent healthy and needed to be changed.
I think if breeders want to change somthing in the breed change tempermant! I mean that judge is ignoart or does not care that the "correct" version of the german shepard has issues walking. A uncle of mine adopted a retired army german shepard and he looks like the orginal version. Nicest dog ever and he saved my life when i almost drowned in a lake!
Now, "line breeding" if done by someone who absolutely knows what they are doing can be used to actually improve a breed but... Inbreeding is mostly done by idiot breeders who simply try to reproduce their already sickly champions of "beauty".
I have 3 Pedigree dogs, I never had problem with them. well I actually askt the breeder ¨for information from a vetreport, on not just the parents but grandparents to.
and I research what desises I should look out for.
you should not buy from a breeder that can not give you a copy of that information on a papir.
som breeders do not test their dogs for genetic diseases, and the kennal club vil reg. dogs even if they not tested.
I've always known Cavaliers have heart problems (particularly mitral valve disease) but wasn't aware they also suffer from syringomyelia. I feel sick that my favorite dog breed is also plaqued with some of the most painful and horrible diseases. Shame on all those idiotic and greedy breeders out there who don't care for the health of their animals.
And this is just one more reason why I ADOPT MUTTS! None of my mutts have genetic problems. They are living long healthy, full lives. My grandmothers purebred chihuahua suffered from a heart murmur, aggression, and eventually seizures.
Thank you for generalizing "Americans". It is always a sign of intelligence (NOT) when someone like you throws an entire country in the same pot and makes assessments on what everyone is thinking.
This is not about anything other than finally speaking out on issues which should have been dealt with many years ago.
If this is propaganda why do we have such a huge increase of K9 disease over the last 60 years especially? The proof is in the pudding my friend.
dogs should be bred for funtion not looks, for example: guard: bullmastiffXrotweiler, shepard: collieXgerman sheperd. small hunter: jackrusselXborderterrier. cute dog: westieXyorkie and so on...... all will be more healthy, happyer, and possibly even better for their job...
I agree. I would love it if we could breed goldens to Labradors and both to Flat-coats. Those three breeds were originally heavily interbred and registered on what they looked like, not on what their parentage was.
My dog is a German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois hybrid, I got her from a breeder who specialises in breeding dogs as working animals rather than for looks.
i have a 16 YEAR OLD terrier mongrol and she is still like a puppy, and very happy. i also have a 9month american bulldogXfrench mastiff who is incredible and knows over 15 commands already. I WILL NEVER own a pedigree
its so wierd how you can get all the different dog breeds from just a wolf. people playing God with animals can never lead to a good thing. but i dont think this is happening to such an extent in show horses, its the backyard breeders who ruin them, breeding a mare reguardless of quality just to see what its babies look like or because of its colour. in the show ring horses are judged on conformation and their ability to succesfully do their job without any hinderance.
I mostly had old mutts LOL--best dogs ever too :) I grew up in a part of the US where a purebred just wasn't common until very recently, and the indigenous "breeds" were all hounds--black and tan, blue-tick, etc. Even they weren't purebred. Leave it up to the Brits to ruin yet another species by making it seem "proper" to them (the UK is where dog shows originated.)
that is so sad...and cruel. fuck you horrible monsters people... huh people will never never understand how the poor dog fell and please dont operate ure dog cause its bad
I have a Cavalier and she's started to scratch like that, I used to have a German Shepherd and his legs gave way. It was horrible to watch and still upsets me. The Cavalier that was screaming in pain was horrific! It's all about money, greed and fame and it makes me sick! I know all dogs aren't like that and not all breeders are as cruel, but a lot of dogs are quiet obviously not right. I mean, look at a Pug and tell me that's not wrong!
I have a Cavalier and she has started to scratch like that. I used to have a German Shepherd and his back legs gave out in the end. The poor Cavalier that was screeming in pain was horrific! Its all about money, pride and greed and it makes me sick!! Sure not every dog is like that, and not all breeders are as cruel but it is quite obvious that a huge amount of dog breeds are seriouly wrong and deformed. I mean just look at them! look at a pug and tell me that's not wrong!!
One of My Australian Shepherds that I currently show in conformation, is from a breeder who only sells her puppies on a contract, only breeds dogs who have genetic health testing, proven strong working ethic and ability, and sound personality. And she only breeds once a year max. If only everyone did this then we wouldn't have these problems.
You just saw some dogs suffering but all you care to push is your dog breeding business.
Of course it bothers you when someone is messing with your shady business practices. A proper breeder will not deny a problem but admit to it and tries to make it better.
You seem completely un faced with the suffering you saw. All you care about is denying that there is a problem.
Your post is very telling and I would like to thank you for exposing yourself for one of "those" breeders.
The only shows my dog goes to are obedience, agility and working trials. Dogs should be fit and healthy active creatures.
Breeders seem to regard genetic defects as a risk rather than something to be eliminated. One need only compare the show greyhound to the racing greyhound to see that show breeding is a waste of time for anyone interested in healthy dogs.
I would only ever buy a Corso from working lines, show breeders are, despite their denials, money grabbing swines after a fast buck.
It's horrifying that these people use dogs as a cash crop. The most unhealthy breeds, like the show-bulldog, seem to command the highest prices.
The Bulldog club has even doctored paintings to pretend that the modern 'thing' looks like the original dogs. One can't imagine one of those squat asthmatic creatures baiting a bull, they have difficulty enough walking and breathing.
Kennel club & pedigree dog breeders to me equal: snobbery + ego/greed inflated business, where profit comes before animal welfare.CRUFTS is the most obscene televised 'event' of the year!Dogs are not toys or possessions/merchandise!Vile puppy farms well overtake any so-called 'responsible' breeding ...Dog breeding of ANY kind is just a dirty business!! I loathe- and never use- the word 'pet'(= 'toy'). ALL breeding and selling of pedigree dogs should be banned; there's too much suffering involved!
Puppy farms and backyard breeders are the problem. 'Pedigree' only means family tree and so x-breds have a pedigree too.
I breed/show, do all health tests, rescue, educate as many as I can: good breeder vs bad breeder. My healthy champion show/obedience dogs sleep in my bed with me. NO suffering.
Some onus should be placed on pet owners that don't do the research, contact their breeds' national club, etc.
Puppy mills and BYB still exist b/c people still support pet stores and buy from them.
You could not be more wrong! Do you even have a dog? Do you hate dogs? Stop drinking PETA Kool-Aid and get yourself educated.
There is nothing dirty about responsible dog or cat breeding.
Maybe if PETA and like so called animal rights organizations would spend their time and money going after pet mills and the pet stores that sell puppies and kittens from pet mills they could claim they had done some good. No responsible breed ever sells to a pet store, period.

How horrible that predigree breeding has gone totally "unwatchful & uncaring" of animals to a state of how much I can make from them. That's cruel/unhuman to do to a animal. I'm shock that such an well established process "once caring/skillful" has seriously gone off the track! Yet, I'm sure there's professional breeders that skillfully with knowleged care follow the guidelines to predigree breeding making sure the animals health & happiness comes, first! But their quite hard/rare to find.
it seems that everytime people get on here and begin telling the truth about pedigree dogs and what the real extent of the problem is, the videos get erased and re-posted so that no one can see the many responses from us responsible breeders.
i have a GSD from german working line.....i would never buy a GSD from the american line as they look like this show dogs! so sad

LouLizzyLou 4 months ago
Why on God's green earth would you buy or breed a poor animal that will have genetic defects? Seeing them suffer a poor quality of life... seems totally insane to me, but then greed reigns supreme even at the cost of their suffering. Where is the humane society in this game of playing God. I hear soon we will be sharing animal DNA; but I am sure they have started it now.....
LouLizzyLou 4 months ago
When you breed a race horse, you look for straight lines, confirmation and a big heart to run with pain...... Why breed a dog that has a bent spine, and overload of body on short legs that cannot sustain the weight and length of their body? I have experienced one purebred so to say.... I simply adored him but sadly he had back to back seizures at 2 years old.and I had to have him put down...........

most owners are the main problems with dogs, they cant keep them quiet!!!
Our 2 dogs only bark when there is danger or somthing is wrong!! hence they rarely Bark!!
Luckily In Australia new laws govern that if you cant keep you dog quiet the owner gets fined :)
rocketmountains 5 months ago
@rocketmountains
You are completely off topic. However... If barking is such a nightmare to you then I don't think you should even own a dog.
Dogs bark when they are warning about intruders, when they are exited, happy, playful and communicative...
If your dogs are only allowed to make themselves heard to save YOUR life then I feel sorry for them.
I suggest you also tell your wife to only speak when she is spoken to, tell your kids to shut up unless it is an emergency and you yourself shut up

WTF!? That German Sheppy looks like a Hyena :S
asiandawn69 6 months ago
Damn, i was shocked to see how mutated some of these breeds have become. The German Sheppard they call 'correct' looks severely messed up. The dog i saw that was a winner of one of the dog shows looked like he could hardly walk properly. His back legs looked like they were shaking, and the dog obviously wouldn't be able to function normally. I'm amazed someone would think a dog like that is a good standard to follow. Im not sure which is more inbred, the dogs or the owner's.

But I do agree with this program. A dog is a friend, not a fashion accessory. Breeders must be the creepiest people on earth

I know my granddad had 2 german shepherds both looked like the show dogs, he probably got them from a shelter cause he is not rich enough to buy one from a breeder. I knew even when I was little that the legs looked and worked a bit oddly.

maple158 8 months ago
@maple158 the initial idea behind 'shows' was good. Finding and promoting the best of the breed. It's what it's turned into that's the problem. It's turned into a popularity contest and as high school taught most of us, being popular doesn't always mean being healthy. It's time the shows starting promoting what they were meant to promote and the judges were trained how to pick out the healthy dogs.

That's just more mutations and inherited diseases to come up.
aerotechway1 1 year ago
@aerotechway1
Actually the opposite is the truth.
They are SUPPOSED to breed naturally.
MandyLionWWIII 1 year ago
@MandyLionWWIII Oh! Yes I agree. I just don't want a dog who's a beauty pageant-I just want a companion.
aerotechway1 1 year ago
@MandyLionWWIII Very true. Pedigree dogs aren't the problem, irresponsible breeders are. Breeding for beauty rather than health is awful.
MsBiancaKate 7 months ago
@MandyLionWWIII , that's not how genetics works. A faster dog is not necessarily a better or healthier or more capable dog. It's just faster. (By the way, aerotechway1 was talking about bulldogs, not greyhounds... I doubt you'll see any bulldog outrun a cheetah). Only in their environment can we tell which dogs are best fit. We should be wary of any artificial environment that requires spending great quantites of cash to maintain, as that is not sustainable over the long term.
rg0057 7 months ago
@rg0057

Martiangrl86 1 year ago

MandyLionWWIII 1 year ago
@MandyLionWWIII I am not joking, it ate part of a rubber chicken and survived, and it weighs much more than 30lbs, it did kill 6 chicken but didn't eat them all, and it did get through the fence, we gave it a bone, and it ate it, it's probably a deformability or growth problem, or maybe not a 'pure' dachshund but it's real you have to see it too believe it, hardly wimpy, dangerous if anything...

Stop breeding will not solve the problem...
Changing the focus on what is important to breed for will...
We the people need to ONLY deal with breeders who breed for function and health and let the showdog mania die.
We need to do away with these silly "ideals" of beauty which are the very reason why many breeds are suffering.
ONLY a healthy dog is a beautiful dog.
When I see a suffering dog I don't think "beauty"... When I see a suffering dog it hurts my soul...
MandyLionWWIII 1 year ago
@MandyLionWWIII

I do have a serious issue with some of the footage of this BBC special for the fact that they do not distinguish a good breeder from a bad breeder.
sylfae 1 year ago
@sylfae
MandyLionWWIII 1 year ago

Why can't people go to the shelter and get dogs that are already alive? By breeding a dog you essentially kill the one in the shelter. People are fucking stupid and it pisses me off. Just because the dog at the shelter perhaps isn't as cute, he/she provides the same amount of love if not more. I rescued 3 of my dogs from the street and the fourth one was from the shelter and I wouldn't have it any other way. Love them to death. This video makes me sick. Fucking bastards.
marick626 1 year ago
@marick626
I don't think that it is fair to good and honest breeders to say that they kill dogs by breeding them.
This here is about money hungry BAD breeders who don't even waste a single thought on the health issues certain looks will produce.
Let us not cruzify honest breeders with good intentions just because we want a quick solution to a huge problem.
Throwing the baby out with the bathwater is just as bad as closing your eyes to a huge problem and pretending it does not exist.
MandyLionWWIII 1 year ago
@MandyLionWWIII
The closest thing to perfection is that which is created by nature.
marick626 1 year ago
@marick626
MandyLionWWIII 1 year ago
@MandyLionWWIII I can tell you from looking at purebred breeders in the US online, it's rare to find on their website that they care about the health problems with the breed they are working with. But the rare gems are the breeders that will tell you exactly what common health problems their breed may face and how they effectively work to ensure that they are producing the healthiest examples of their breed.
rayme4raw 1 year ago
@marick626
In fact:
When you breed a dog for a certain task is exceeds any other creatures ability in that field by a ridiculous degree. Think of what the Bloodhound can do with his nose... Way beyond what the Wolf is capable off. Look at the Greyhound... Way faster than a Wolf...
What I am saying is that domesticated breeds have a right to be. I understand your anger at irresponsible showdog breeders. But I disagree with letting the domesticated dog die just because it seems like an easy fix
MandyLionWWIII 1 year ago
No, the breeding shouldn't be completely outlawed, but it does need to be much more controlled with far fewer accepted registrations and therefore fewer breeders because why breed if you can't get your dogs registered? And the akc and kennel club need to amend their breed standards so that problems such as that plaguing the german shepherd can be bred out.
sylvesterthekat 1 year ago
@sylvesterthekat
I agree with you 100 percent.
A breed standard should be the ideal representation of what any given breed can be.
If we are talking about beauty then a healthy dog will always be the ideal.
What is beautiful about a dog that can barely walk or breathe...?
There is nothing more beautiful than a healthy and happy dog of any breed.
Different breeds were never intended just to look different. They were supposed to have different talents which are without equal.
MandyLionWWIII 1 year ago
@sylvesterthekat
There was a time when breeding produced healthy dogs with these talents...
That was because the philosophy of breeding was a different one... Back then people knew that "form must follow function".
In today's world breeders, the kennel Club and the AKC think that "function follows form".
This, of course, is completely ridiculous.
If we breed for function we will end up with healthy dogs which will take on the ideal look and form of a dog performing a certain task.
MandyLionWWIII 1 year ago
@marick626

MandyLionWWIII 1 year ago

HybridInformation 2 years ago
@HybridInformation Mutts do tend to be healthier. Doesn't mean they all are. Just generally speaking. If you think about it, it works the same way with humans. If both parents carry a gene/disease/ailment, whether it's active or dormant it's more likely to be passed down to their offsprings. With only one parent carrying a certain gene, there's less chance.

Now, "line breeding" if done by someone who absolutely knows what they are doing can be used to actually improve a breed but... Inbreeding is mostly done by idiot breeders who simply try to reproduce their already sickly champions of "beauty".
It truly is a sick world we live in...

- that is what I think needs to be adressed!

Omg....you americans are soooo inteligent....i can't belive it takes you 1 video to complitly change or CREATE and attitude...
Sure a lot of things in this video are true...but come on....this IS a propaganda.
It's not a fault of breeding but of iresponsable breeders and owners
leftlife 2 years ago
Thank you for generalizing "Americans". It is always a sign of intelligence (NOT) when someone like you throws an entire country in the same pot and makes assessments on what everyone is thinking.
This is not about anything other than finally speaking out on issues which should have been dealt with many years ago.
If this is propaganda why do we have such a huge increase of K9 disease over the last 60 years especially? The proof is in the pudding my friend.
Sincerely, just another American

dogs should be bred for funtion not looks, for example: guard: bullmastiffXrotweiler, shepard: collieXgerman sheperd. small hunter: jackrusselXborderterrier. cute dog: westieXyorkie and so on...... all will be more healthy, happyer, and possibly even better for their job...

My grandfather had a beagle cross that lived to be 18. She outlived his pure beagles by 5 or 6 years!

its so wierd how you can get all the different dog breeds from just a wolf. people playing God with animals can never lead to a good thing. but i dont think this is happening to such an extent in show horses, its the backyard breeders who ruin them, breeding a mare reguardless of quality just to see what its babies look like or because of its colour. in the show ring horses are judged on conformation and their ability to succesfully do their job without any hinderance.

This made me cry.. why do people claim inbreeding is no good for humans, then they make all the little creatures in-breed. What horrific suffering.

Sure not every dog is like that, and not all breeders are as cruel but it is quite obvious that a huge amount of dog breeds are seriouly wrong and deformed. WHERE IS PART 2??
16and30 3 years ago
One of My Australian Shepherds that I currently show in conformation, is from a breeder who only sells her puppies on a contract, only breeds dogs who have genetic health testing, proven strong working ethic and ability, and sound personality. And she only breeds once a year max. If only everyone did this then we wouldn't have these problems.
ErinKeechak 3 years ago
You just saw some dogs suffering but all you care to push is your dog breeding business.
Of course it bothers you when someone is messing with your shady business practices. A proper breeder will not deny a problem but admit to it and tries to make it better.
You seem completely un faced with the suffering you saw. All you care about is denying that there is a problem.
Your post is very telling and I would like to thank you for exposing yourself for one of "those" breeders.
MandyLionWWIII 3 years ago
Well, I have met MANY cavaliers, and none of which have had that problem, and alot are over 5.
I think this is extremely bias and ridiculous, brainwashing people into thinking that us pedigree breeders are irresponsible.
TaraJayneRikku 3 years ago
The only shows my dog goes to are obedience, agility and working trials. Dogs should be fit and healthy active creatures.
Breeders seem to regard genetic defects as a risk rather than something to be eliminated. One need only compare the show greyhound to the racing greyhound to see that show breeding is a waste of time for anyone interested in healthy dogs.
I would only ever buy a Corso from working lines, show breeders are, despite their denials, money grabbing swines after a fast buck.
EnormousHuntBall 3 years ago

ALL breeding and selling of pedigree dogs should be banned; there's too much suffering involved!
bonniekali 3 years ago
Puppy farms and backyard breeders are the problem. 'Pedigree' only means family tree and so x-breds have a pedigree too.
I breed/show, do all health tests, rescue, educate as many as I can: good breeder vs bad breeder. My healthy champion show/obedience dogs sleep in my bed with me. NO suffering.
Some onus should be placed on pet owners that don't do the research, contact their breeds' national club, etc.
Puppy mills and BYB still exist b/c people still support pet stores and buy from them.
pixiechick2007 3 years ago
