I am watching the Senna documentary and just saw this for the first time (haven't been following F1 for that long) and i was amazed he was able to survive that. i'm glad to see that today the cars are so safe, because as he said, there is more to life than driving a race car.
@TheYankeesdawg LOL That is exactly why I'm here too. I thought he was 300% dead after seeing his motionless body lying on the track like that. They don't show the video in the movie though.
oh my goodness im glad he is okay and he was very lucky to be alive he just drove the same car that almost killed him in this years goodwood festival of speed
With all it's faults, always loved Estoril as a circuit, also esp Peraltada .final corner in Mexico (hope I got the spelling right..it's been a while!!!)
A promising career cut short with Donnelly, it would be interesting but pointless to wonder how todays cars would fare in such a shunt
@MrBv256 not really, Martin hit the barrier head on and Villeneuve hit the back of Jochen Mass' car which flipped him into the air and he was launched out of the car as it cartwheeled. Two very different accidents.
@MrBv256 No they didn't, Villeneuve got flung out of the car. Martin hit the barrier and the car disintegrated around him. Martin's injuries were horrific but he didn't break his neck and that is what killed Villeneuve.
@jerryaltman That was due to the sheer force of the crash and safety standards at the time were not adequate enough to deal with that sort of crash.
Thankfully Donnelly lived but it was a big shame that it ended his career seeing that he had just renewed his contract with Lotus for 1991, he had a bright future in the sport, not a world champ but he was certainly a future race winner.
Considering after this crash which he survived and was in a coma for 3 months and remains in good health able to walk and talk perfectly is an absaloute miracle. Brilliant to see
c'mon guys this was friday first practice.....there is no footage of the crash...there are photos of him hitting the ground or sliding across the racetrack but no footage....sorry but that is the truth.
@MrPifta possibly Eurosport covered the Friday practices back then but the TV Cameras were not pointing in that direction at that time and since the stands seem to be pretty empty it is very unlikely that there is amateur footage either. IMHO if anything this accident would have look like Jean-Louis Lafosse's accident in LeMans in 1981, the car going into the ARMCO finding the softspots but then hitting a reinforced area and exploding in the process.
He had a very promising career and could well have been a success in F1, his 1990 performances were excellent being as good as Derek Warwick most of the time.
His leg is so messed up. How did he live and not senna

The cockpit seens quite weak in his car, since he was ejected from the car with a huge piece of the car still attashed in his body by the belt..
