Maybe it's just the droogie inside me talking but I think Mustaine was the only real thrasher in Metallica. They had their own sound before he arrived and kept it after he left. But it was not thrash enough. Mustaine "metaled up" metallica both musically and image-wise. It is almost impossible to say who played thrash first. Some N.W.O.B.H.M. bands(like Atomkraft) were pretty thrashy long before Dave, Kerry and James picked up their guitars. Even Iron Maiden had a couple of fast paced songs.

Fans of modern metal who hate on Metallica should be banned from listening. Total ignorance of metal history. I don't care if Lars is a douche, or if Re-load sucked or if the snare on St Anger was harsh, or whatever other whining fans want to do about the band. Metallica is the reason all modern metal bands exist. Period. And Battery, Fight Fire with Fire, Damage Inc, Blackened, etc are as brutal as anything today.

But I hear so many people trashing Metallica as posers, sellouts, not heavy, etc. And I just think that's ignorant. There's a difference between not caring for the music and dismissing it as irrelevant. Younger fans only know the Load/Reload and Napster era and jump on the I-hate-Metallica bandwagon. @jubul666 slayers first album came out in December, Metallicas in July, Slayer Recorded it in November, and inspiration doesn't mean Misfits or motorhead created the genre, and James wrote songs like Hit The Lights before Metallica was even formed, so you can't say it was Dave Mustaine that influenced Metallica.
