Mario Galaxy came out in 07.

Dumb people, are being dumb. Sonic did beat Mario to space, but he never had an adventure ENTIRELY in space, like Galaxy. Also power-ups is DEFINITELY Mario's turf. No this game wasn't designed to be like SMG2, that'd be impossible since they were being developed at (around) the same time. It was however made to be like SMG1, Sega themselves admitted this (okay not SPECIFICALLY Galaxy, but you get my drift).

Yeah, this sounds a little bit like something out of Super Mario Galaxy. But that's not a bad thing. And besides, most of the other songs sound a lot more Sonic-ish, so one song that is a little different is no problem at all.

Sonic's been pulling the full orchestral trax far longer than Mario has, so I really don't see how you can say that Sonic is ripping off the musical "style" of Mario Galaxy in this game, especially since it goes back to the roots of the cheesy rock BGMs that everyone loves for a huge amount of the soundtrack.
