Personally I used Blender for the 3d models of the shell casing and the bullet as well as the animation of those objects, but I did use adobe after effects for the muzzle flash and smoke. If you dont have a thousand bucks for after FX though, Blender does have the ability to do these things as well (particle system). ;)
