I was there in June of 1989 and was lucky enough to actually cross the real Checkpoint Charlie as well. I walked on through to East Berlin but at that time it was not that simple (I remember waiting in lines) and I was equally as nervous!
This is not the real Checkpoint Charlie. I went through the real one in the late 80s and there was very little traffic either side of the immediate border. The checkpoint had signs up in German, English, French and Russian and first-timers, like me, felt quite nervous even approaching it on foot with no intention of crossing, let alone actually crossing it.
As a former Military Policeman and NCOIC at Charlie Checkpoint, the sight of the MP imposters who are role-playing there is so sickening it's almost laughable! Had any of the MPs who rotated through there shown up for duty dressed like that, they would have certainly been turned right around and sent back, and most likely would have ended up reassigned as combat engineers as a few others i recall were!!!
The small hut you see is just a replica of Checkpoint Charlie. It is in the same location as the original. (The original is located at the Allied Museum on Clayallee in Berlin) This was merely the checkin place for the Americans, British and French. Continuing on you entered the Soviet Sector. The Allies didn't show passports to enter the Soviet Zone which was guarded by East Germans, which was not recognized by the Allies to be official...it was merely the Soviet Sector of Berlin.
Now germany is reunited. Once north and south korea achieve reunification their former forested dmz will remain as a protected untouched nature reserve for nature/camp-lovers.
no does not exist any more! since 1989! this is a fake installed a few meters behind the former border! but somethimes i am not shure if it still is there? one the former place, but just somethimes!
it's a replica of the real checkpoint, installed by a private Museum just in front of it. This is situated in Friedrichstrasse, stretching out from Unter den Linden.

does the real one have a sign near it telling you that you are leaving the usa controled zone ?
19panther87 4 years ago
Yes it does. That sign is also a replica.
By the way, the Museum shows up in this video, at the end - the Haus am Checkpoint Charlie.
