Have you ever noticed most of these gurus teaching how to make money NEVER tell you the simple things that mean a lot. Listen to what they DON'T say and DO that and watch what happens. Having your site indexed in search engines BEFORE you are listed in 100's of directories is dumb. How can your site be rank when you are not even found anywhere??? The lower you start the harder it is to climb - THEY know it & don't teach it.
If you have a webshop on the internet with a ton of images near your products, you should describe every image with the use of alt-tages and it helps building content to your pages to, because Google can read the alternative text (alt-tag)!
since ALT isnt used on all browsers, should we use both ALT and TITLE on images and should this text be duplicate??? We want to help both visually impaired people and search engines and users with "any" browser.
Don't want to be rude but this is basic HTML knowledge. If someone calls himself a SEOer or Web-designer he/she should know this. Otherwise go back to where you learned your business and learn more. This is not only important for SEO purposes but also for Accessibility, user experience with JS galleries, some browser addons, ...
Yes, it's still very important (seo) in 2010 to use the ALT-Text for all your images.
Check the Google Cache of any of your webpages, with images.
You will see that Google prints out the ALT-Text of the image in plain text.
Just like the video says, If you don't tell the Google spider what the image is, then they don't have a clue how to position you in the Google Image SERP (search engine result page)
thanks now i do not have to worry have name the images, the alt tag is sufficient for the visitor. But can the title and alt tag for the image together hurt ? some browers do not show alt texts like firefox.
Im at a stand still while i see alt tags as a possible way to inflate your serps, shouldn't alt tags really be used to to describe somethig meaning full, like a image of storm clouds/heavey rain that would be something relavent to a blind user
Image tagging "cat with yarn" is irreverent to a blind user or is it? I can see google stand point from an image search point of view but would it not be better to name the image file "cat_with_yarn.jpg" rather then the alt="cat with yarn"?
The clear explanation is excellent. I am glad you took the time in the video to address avoiding stuffing of words, but to also take the time to accurately describe the image to Google.
You know I was thinking the same thing. It's not a tag, it's an attribute of the img tag. It's one of those pet peaves for us developers to have to hear that all the time lol. If he won't say it right then unfortunately nobody will. Not setting a good example.
Yeah - definitely not! And than I get bad ratings for pointing this out :D But I'm pretty sure he just fluffed.. several times :) But he's still cool and we still love him! ^^
Worth noting that YouTube has no ALT text for the four tabs across the top of each page (video, categories, channel, community), none for the Upload arrow, and none for the Powered by Google image. There's not even alt text for the Partner Channel images... Come on Google, get YouTube to add them, for the benefit of everyone!
It is also worth noting that the four tabs across the top do not have content in the image that you would ever WANT an alt tag for. The image only provides the background and border, there is actually linked text in those buttons that is beautifully self describing. As for the upload arrow, that has an alternate form on the page already, the upload link tag. The image does not provide content, only supplements it.
A similar case could be made for the "powered by" logo, although that is a gray area. Would you want that read off in a screen reader? Is there content there you are providing and should therefore add to your searchable footprint?
I'd not noticed the 4 tabs were actually text with an image behind them before - so on those specifically fair enough, as they don't need ALT tags as they're already text. The other items though I feel do need ALT text, simply for accesibility for all users.
How do you do this if the image is hosted by a third party website that doesn't let you tag your photos? Can I still code it when pulling it to my URL to be viewed?
Alt Tags ofcourse are important and they are required by Google right?

You might as well do the Alt text, at least that way you know you have covered all the bases.

So which tag to use, or both?

@allbonusbets
It's really not important If the browser supports the ALT-Tag,
The html is still the same (view source).
What's important is that you name your image (Alt-Text) relevant to your webpage Title, so that Google will put you in the correct Google Image SERP.
A lot of folks miss out on traffic from Google Images, by overlooking this simple step.

Please extend the size of the ALT TAG so we can make it more descriptive. Also add new TAGS for video.

When you write your post and upload the pics in blogger, witch from compose to edit html, not ad the html alt tag to each pic
