  • This version is so incredible.

  • I asked Bazan about this song at a living room show and he said he wrote it about his friend's relationship and that he felt guilty writing it.

  • I wish he could fit the piano in his van for the living room tours.

  • I could listen to this on repeat for years.

  • Is this song about his wife or about God?

Could be either really..... fucking fabulous.

  • @l33tpwnzord If I remember correctly, David said in an interview that this song was written about a man he knew that left his wife. This guy's reason for throwing away the marriage was that he'd never really loved her in the first place and was only faking it. So, this song isn't intended to be autobiographical at all. But you are right: this song is amazing.

  • @C20SM i think you are close, but notice the line where he says "you know it isn't like me to be inflammatory, but rather than let you think i was so naive i'd have you believe...i never wanted you" it's a song about a guy getting his heart broken by a girl and saying well i was faking the whole time. it's denial ya know.

  • @l33tpwnzord why would he say baby? and the part about the wick is about a wedding lol. it's about a girl leaving a guy or something and the guy basically saying that he was faking the whole time anyway, in a way to get the upper hand in the situation ya know

  • @turkqb4

Well yeah that just means it has 2 meanings ... a relationship with God is paralleled in the bible to a sexual relationship. Did Bazan mean to talk about his own departure from christianity in it? I dunno....

  • Ha .that part of the viaduct is gone as of this week. I'll miss that drive.

  • gee, one of my friends dedicated this song to me.... what a way to have a friendship breakup!!

  • This take is so much more powerful than the cut from the Headphones record. Both good, but the piano really suits his voice better for this song.

  • @deebsboy

I agree with you, but I'm not sure whether it's just the sound or if it's made more powerful by being able to see the emotion on his face in this video.

  • since this song isn't available for purchase/download as an mp-three, the audio has been extracted and can be had at worldwideweb dot media fire dot com slash question mark bp9v4ha2qpf4420

  • @BubbaCoop I think that when listened to in light of David's loss of faith and rejection in the Christian God, this song fits perfectly as a mirror of what's going on in David's mind as he is telling this God he never wanted Him. It's fairly common for former Christians to say they only claimed to follow Jesus because they felt like they had to and expressed their apparent willingness in front of the church which acts as a witness.

  • @we3are7art9 there's also the line that says " and then we lit one wick" which refers to the common wedding tradition of two individuals lighting one candle together using two separate flames. I hear a song talking about a formerly married couple.

  • @we3are7art9 Interesting that he refers to the Christian God as 'baby' throughout this song, if thats the case. Are you sure that is the topic of this song?? A heart broken by a woman seems more likely and fitting.

  • @1RelentlessBoi It's obviously not about his faith but Bazan's Christian fans always have to bring it back to that.

  • This is me. O.o

  • I meant STITCHES...

  • @ aniisecret321 I agree 100% with you! Just like the song Stitchesm

  • such a beautiful song, i simply cannot hear it enough

  • God bazan is a mother fucking badass.

  • I seriously have been playing this version of this song about 15 times a day. It is absolutely amazing. I aspire to write something this breathtaking. simple notes on a piano, backed by a single beat, with one of the greatest voices of all time. This is musical composition at it's finest.

  • @Nightwinghimself I've been doing the same thing since I heard it a year or so ago. I can't get enough of this song. It's cool to see other people that appreciate badass music.

  • lord, what an incredible version of this song

  • nice piano man

  • I don't feel sorry for Dave Bazan. I think he's a man child. There, I said it.

  • This is such a great version of this song. I think I like it better than the original.

  • Does anyone know the piano part??

  • @RENT8GIRL

    Yes.

  • one of my favorite songs ever...

  • oh man! right at 4:00 minutes, that falsetto voice. Hilarious! Not to down play the song at all, it's my favorite headphones song. but that was out of nowhere and just incredible.

  • this is awesome! i just saw him this weekend and he signed my guitar, best day of my life!

  • This song would be ideal for The Vampire Diaries.. You know, with Katharine and all (:

  • i think there is much more at work here than denial. he really doesnt want this person. he was in a relationship for so long that it worked because it was someone, but at the end, he really doesnt want them. the lyrics are pretty straight forward, but show considerable depth beyond denial. its honesty. painful honesty.

  • Thanks for ruining all other music for me, David Bazan.

  • @anoirmarie Really though.. I only listen to his stuff! occasionally some Broken Social Scene, maybe some radiohead. But 95% of the time i find myself at David Bazan's music. He's is just so addicting.

  • I don't feel like this song is about a marriage or anything like that. I believe he's talking about God. David Bazan is very religious, and all his songs seem to sound like love songs, but I feel like it's an back and forth relationship with God he's singing about in a lot of his songs. Just my thoughts, though.

  • @aniisecret321

Rather contemplatively religious. Sorry. Not very religious...

  • @aniisecret321 I never thought about "I never wanted you [GOD]" like this. I always pictured it as a story, between a man and his wife, not necessarily his wife. Like most of his stuff up to the point he wrote this (04/05), most of his songs were stories, not really based on personal experience. But it makes sense. I still think it's about some hypothetical situation. He has started writing more personally/narrative. His solo album "Curse Your Branches" is pretty much ten tracks of just that.

  • @aniisecret321

"I don't feel like this song is about a marriage or anything like that."

Of course it is. It's right there in the lyrics.

    "I told you I did

In front of witnesses" - Wedding

"rather than let you think that I was

So naive, I'd have you believe.

    I never wanted you"

Obviously hurt, perhaps by adultery. Instead of admitting to being fooled, tries to convince the ex, and himself that he was doing the fooling.

  • I have seen him live many times. If you haven't. You need to. He moves people. To the core of who they are. Shakes the very foundation. Spotlights things we'd all prefer not to feel or that we would hope to keep under the rug. Also, a genuinly nice person. Wonderful spirit.

  • so raw and real, the "world" needs more of this

  • I think the line "rather than have you think I was so naive, I'd have you believe" is Bazan showing his cards. He did want her. He did believe. He's telling himself he didn't to ease the pain.

  • I love this song so much. I'm hoping to see David and his band in Feb with Jimmy Eat World.

  • This song is incredibly beautiful.

Does anyone know where I can get the sheet music?

  • Sometimes I fucking hate you David Bazan.

  • not sad. Liberating. A liberation that millions will never have the guts to say allowed.

  • @KyleW00d you missed a very big key in this song.. most do

But rather than let you think that I was

So nave, I'd have you believe.

    I never wanted you

    I never wanted you.

    You never had my heart.

    Our love was never true.

its really him being heart broken.. and playing the part that he doesnt care... this is david bazaan. not some selfish prick getting his rocks off.... many of us have done this.. flop the tables... he is hurting... trying to convince himself he never wanted her :)

  • @bonbanelo Dude... thank you. I've been trying to figure out this song. I love it so much. This is my favorite song in the world and you have just added a dimension to it that makes me love it even more. Thank you.

  • @johngeetar this song is soooo good.. i only caught this because I have always been inspired by him in my writing and followed him kinda closely for years haha :) he is such a sweet and gentile giant.. dont think he could hurt a fly.. so if what he is saying doesnt seem like it fits that.. there is more to it. dig deeper..

  • @KyleW00d aloud

  • @carlsonms forgive me. Woodford reserve has a bad habit of taking my ability to spell away from me at 2am. Good call though, I'm glad you can spell.

@bonbanelo I've probably listened to this song a hundred times and never looked at it that way. Definitely changes things. Although, I would never consider someone forced into a marriage due to various circumstances as being a selfish prick getting his rocks off when he finally admits the truth and can't live in a lie anymore.

  • @KyleW00d I'm pretty sure every liquor will do that to you. Not just the good, expensive ones.

  • @KyleW00d cant find your comment.. and yes he still is married to his second wife ;)

  • Such a beautiful song yet so sad.

  • something in his voice is subtly reminding me of caleb followill. maybe it's just me.

  • dave your songs will literally kill me one day. death by bazan.

  • beautiful, I came across this some months ago-and I find myself frequently revisiting

  • thats freaking AMAZING.

  • gorgeous simplicity.

  • Sometimes I feel like David took a snapshot of my life and wrote this song about it...

  • This song has been stuck in my head for over a month now and I'm still not tired of it.

  • I think I like this simplified version for the DVD better than the track from the self-titled Headphones album.

  • does anyone know where i can get the mp3s to Alone at the Microphone? the dvd may have the best versions of these songs that exist.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG

  • i understand!

  • Had a terrible time with a relationship....David Bazan helped me to see what it was really was about.

  • it's on his Headphones album. This is amazing, but I do love the album version times a millions! They are both just as amazing tho.

  • this was very sad.

  • can someone send me this song ...the album version! please

  • All lies Ive told to myself....

  • @mstr416 indeed

  • so...why, when, "...saturnine wondering" ?

  • It's a dichotomy. It's mature. It's real. And I can feel it :)

  • I would h.a.t.e. to be the girl he wrote this about.

  • or the God he wrote this about..??

  • .... true =/ unfortunately he went that way.

  • one of two songs that have ever moved me so much to the point where i shed a tear. yeah..thats right, i cried. wanna fight about it?

  • which was the other?

  • the wolves by bon iver.

  • I sure do. I'll kick the shit out of you. lol

  • well, that wasn't really the song that I needed to hear right now.

  • heart breaking :(

  • thats one down to earthy honest man. i love you !

  • During no point could one add nor subtract from this song. It is a correct rarity. Bazan; I was listening the whole time.

  • typical dave bazan. absolutely zero pretension. he forces me to confront realities i'd rather avoid, but which are slowly killing me. but i keep listening to all of his and pedro's stuff because it's so good. dave, if you read this (i know, i know, it's not like you don't hear this 1000 times a day) the longest winter changed my life. fucker.

  • To confront reality with no avoidance is to experience the pure and unclouded joy of life.

  • abzd you are right on every point.

    redemption for all....

  • The exact same here.

"Get out of my head! Get out of my head!" - Chris Griffin

  • @abzd555 fuck you abzd, why did you have to make us all admit it?

  • @abzd555 fuck you for making us all admit it.

  • @abzd555 Want me to dig the sand out of your vagina

  • @abzd555

damn, that comment is fukken deep. and lol yeah, i bet he does hear that all the time about the longest winter. still tears me up damn near every time.

  • mmm. good.

  • Can I get those tas also?

  • Bad ass!

  • Bad ass!

  • Hey goodwilldrums... Could you send me the piano tabs too?

    Thanks!

  • best headphones song by far. bazan is a legend. he said he would be putting out another headphones record on suicide squeeze when he played at the troubador last week.

  • He played an acoustic guitar version of this at last night's waterloo records instore in Austin. I find the piano version to be most haunting.

  • it's originally from the headphones abum

  • when was this song made?

  • its sounds amazing but its very sad

  • In light of his recent de-conversion, this song takes on even more significance. He should perform this song while facing the sky. I'm glad he's finally broken free of religion's grip.

  • @worldsworstjukebox god damn why do you have to make it about God.

  • @iLEE but that was what he was writing it about. It was his break up song with God. He was a Chistian, and he left the church. Everyone has a right to interpretation but that is what was what he was writing it about.

  • @mattrl227 Really?

He was calling god "baby?" He tricked god? god thought they connected? I don't think so.

  • the good ol' 99. clasic.

  • a lovely song

  • can someone give me the tabs please

  • which city is this?

  • nevermind, I understand it's Seattle, which I would have guessed.

  • Seattle

  • Seattle?

  • if anyone has these piano tabs and would like to share them I would be incredibly grateful. thank you in advance.

  • This song is devastatingly beautiful.

  • I would like the tabs for this as well please

  • I can't find a download for the headphones anywhere. How can I download this song. I love it so much. O_o

  • Ummm you can't buy the acoustic version (this version), but the technified version is on iTunes. They're both good. This one is better though.

  • I would love to play this. May you please send me the tabs as well goodwilldrums? Thank you very much : )

  • I've tried numerous times to post the tab on here (obviously by the number of comments removed by author). You Tube does NOT like you to put spaces between characters it deems as unnecessary. So I'll just try and message you personally.

  • I ran into this bug the other day. It's when you try to paste something in...

  • do you think it's actually 6:30?

  • He's awesome! Going to see him and The Long Winters at Doe Bay Fest this year. SOOO EXCITED. Can't wait for the new record

  • David's music has an excruciatingly personal aspect, and watching him perform brings a vision of a tortured soul. A man who loves to express himself while baring his insecurities and triumphs at the same time. He is both genius and ordinary.

His live performances are hypnotic, giving us an opportunity to reflect on our own sadness, and feeling triumphant about David's. Excellent work Mr. Bazan!

  • great song

  • Happy Valentines Day!

  • UNBELIEVABLE!!! I think I watched this 20 times tonight!!

  • This song is amazing and this is the highway I take home from work everyday. perfect.

  • Which highway is that? It looks very industrial - reminds me of parts of Houston.

  • That's I-5 in Seattle, Washington.

  • Isn't it 99??

  • this is amazing.

  • this is my shit.

  • Perfect

  • the dvd is amazing...best 15 bucks I have EVER spent. Hes not human.

  • i tabbed this out on my piano last night...can't stop singing and playing it.

  • could you pm me the tab goodwill? i would love to play this, but am not that great at piano.

  • Can you also PM me the tabs, if you don't mind?

  • This song is amazing. and so is the Seattle footage, I didn't even realize it was Seattle until I saw Safeco like the millionth time I watched this video.

    I want this DVD, bad.

  • the back beat is a metronome.

  • It's a loop of Dave hitting a bass drum then run through a guitar amp. there's film of Dave setting up the loop on the DVD.

  • why would this song make you cry???? it empowering!!!!!!! did i spell that right? im not so sure ? lol

  • one of the most beautiful songs i listen to

  • this song makes me cry...

    but the song is awesome

  • i was faking the whole time

  • unfortunately i have never seen him and i live in the philadelphia area, so im patiently awaiting his next venture to this side of the country

  • sad day. you gotta see him live... it'll be one major highlight of your life.

  • NOICE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Why is this under DAvid Bazan when the song was composed under Headphones?

  • he did this version of it for his DVD he released.

  • Beautiful.

  • so good.

  • ''Crushing'' is the word... Insanely sincere...

  • this is so haunting and beautiful. david bazan is the man

  • wow!

    this is so great.

even better then the recorded version.

  • : )

  • This is really incredible.

  • Totally brutal. Crushing. Incredible.

  • Amazing.

  • Really awesome Bob. Thanks for putting this up.
