Hate to break it to you, but the government of Afghanistant, the current one, the NATO-approved one, is an Islamic Republic. As in, a state with an official religion (Islam) which can legally execute a citizen who tries to convert from Islam to another religion, a state comparable to Pakistan and Iran. THAT is what the troops are currently fighting to preserve.
