Wow, this is so amazing from the choreography to the stunning set. Such carefully placed details, its just breathtaking. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Just watched this movie the other night in preparation for seeing The Black Swan today. Haven't see it since I was a child. Breathtakingly gorgeous film.
i love this piece, but the lack of it's presence in our culture today makes me sad. i feel only dance students and real dancers know about it. why are we plagued with so many awful competition "dance shows" featuring under-qualified non-performers and, dare i say, bad choreography. c'mon artists, i say, "REVOLUTION!!! RETURN TO ART!!!!"
I still cannot fathom how immensely perfect and beautiful this ballet is. As a cinematic scene, it ranks among the most illustrious of art. Not only is this an artistic achievement, it is also a technical achievement. One could spend a lifetime discussing every shot and its juxtaposition with the others. It is as important and influential as Citizen Kane. Its also interesting to note how selective the Archers were in the use of the color red. It emphasizes key moments. Everything seems to work!
@1kookoonut It is probably too late to answer your questions, but Criterion just released an amazing blu-ray transfer of The Red Shoes last month, it is the same print which UCLA meticulously restored. Definitely worth the buy (or at least rent).
The first time i saw this i thought she had made her way to the slums and that they were hookers, but wiki says "She falls into a netherworld, where she dances with a piece of newspaper which turns briefly into her boyfriend. She is then beset by grotesque creatures, including the shoemaker, who converge upon her in a manner reminiscent of The Rite of Spring."
I guess i was wrong... but its ok still a great ballet and movie! :)
Magnificent, as always!

I love the way the red shoes look with the white dress and tights.

The enchanted red slippers. Ergo my lifelong love of shoes; searching for the enchanted red shoes.

Much tamer ending to the story than the Grimm Brothers version. In that she asks an executioner to chop her feet off with his axe.

Beautiful, but is this the full movie? Where can I watch the full movie 1948 with Moira Shearer?
