  • he is good but george is better

  • as a fan of both, I dunno george's version is different, so you can't say he took it from Bopper, he just changed it and did it differently, otherwise, both versions are great, not going to a war between them, it just seems more like a country song then 50's rock and roll, since white lightning is a brand of vodka...

  • JP Richardson (The Big Bopper) had the best lyrics. His songs were so fun and upbeat. I always smile when I hear them. :)

  • unca ivy mabe twice run apple lighting

    this was his pick

    that makes it mine

  • this version is awesome, but i prefer the version where eddie cochran and gene vincent sing this song together

  • I love both versions of White Lightning -----both Richardson and Jones did fantastic jobs on their versions.....no argument here.....Jones and Richardson were friends and I think Jones' version was in tribute to the Bopper!

  • The words 'better' and 'best' have no place in a discussion of pop music. We all have our individual (entirely subjective) tastes, and why not cop to it, and simply say 'I prefer' or 'such and such is the one that moves me'. Another question: 'Why do we have to compare artists' output with other artists at ALL?' Is it a 'mine's bigger than yours' thing? Let's think about the motive behind what we say in public forums before we hit the 'post' button.

  • You can't beat the original but waylon jennings does a good cover of this

  • I know he wrote this song and I do love the big bopper but on this one song I think george jones does it better

  • Not right that George Jones got more hits. The Big Bopper does this best.

  • We miss ya JP

  • Written by "RICHARDSON" (THE BIG BOPPER) NOT George Jones!

Me! . . .well i just love both versions.

  • Interesting pictures about prohabition. Especially police confiscating moonshine and illegal whiskey at the time. Give the Bopper some due, since he performed and more importantly, he wrote it. Props.

  • GREAT ! Thanks Peppy....

  • This version has more of a blues sound and I love the blues.

  • I just finished reading 'Not fade away' by Jim Dodge, this man can sing but i don't think its worth a Cadillac.

  • Rockin' greatness

  • THE BIG BOPPER REALLY ROCKS MATES!

  • Did this version get famous too?

  • oh yea badass haha nah good song though

  • Love that Bass guitar ! Very danceable tune.

  • George Jones sounds like a drunken Karaoke version! Big Bopper is the original and the best version!

  • Waylon Jennings does a mean version of this as well... he also was supposed to be in the Big Bopper's plane seat, but was feeling ill so gave it to him instead

  • Super musik und geiles video...Thx for the Vid:)...

  • I never heard this version before, and didn't know The Big Bopper wrote the song. Your video pictures are great!!!

  • big bopper ftw to bad he died

  • I wish it never happened, because we would not have the CRAP that we have today. Big Bopper>Justin Bieber.

  • @PoliticalWeekly Justin who? ;-)

  • This version rocks! Makes George Jones version sound sissy by comparison.

  • Ein echter KRACHER - hör ich immer wieder gerne !

  • Thanks, I never heard this ABSOLUTELY ACE version. Bit slower, but WOW!

I think I drank some of this 105 octane brew in the US a couple of years ago.

  • Great one, you don't hear it too often - - -

  • Very underated artist the Bopper yet he played a BIG part in the foundation of Rock and Roll

  • Excellent - a lot of fun!

  • the music died almost 52 years ago, Buddy Holly, Ritchey Valens, and Big Bopper rip! I was born 60 years too late but I love all your classics!

  • Absolute class. Would have loved it if The Cramps had covered this.

    Or did they?

  • What a mighty celebrate of the events that ruined the American Republic forever by establishing Orgainized Crime as a more powerful force than the Federal Government (ignore them State lines, boize & idaho !!) ever could be. All it took was a Rockerfeller Standard Oil to crush the Democratic half and voila !! Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Clause.

  • I love this songwriter version!! I GJ's version but both versions are great!!

  • Please try to be friendly - it's just music ! I just erased one coment...

If you ask me about the song I have to say that I LOVE the George Jones version (the early one on Mercury), but the Big Bopper original is a R+R KILLER !!!

Both versions are so different that it is possilbe to love them both...

  • @blackeyedjoe Gotta agree...listen and learn! I love the George Jones version to the max, but the Bopper is very close. It's a different sound, but great.

  • george jones sounds a lot better singing this than the big bopper.

  • this sucks george jones is better!!!!!!!!!

  • @cls4wheelin92 are you kidding?

  • Big Boppers cool. But gotta say I like The Fall's version of this tune. Really rocks the house down. :)

  • wish music was still like this. un like what they call music today

  • Damn it! Said it before, but I´m born 60 years too late...

This is REAL rock´n roll :)

  • @Monkeyspankerelite You have great taste in music for a young person. :-)

  • @Monkeyspankerelite You're younger than 10?

  • excellent track love the sax , sounds like King Curtis

  • R.I.P rock in peace

  • The Big Bopper was great! I've never heard this song before. I hope The Big Bopper, Buddy and Ritchie are someplace entertaining all the folks that went before us.

  • This original version is the best.

  • WooW..this is by far the best version of "white lightning" a good rockin version..

  • Johnny Paycheck's version takes the cake for me.

  • Naaah. George Jones never got a smile out of this like Big Bopper did.

RIP Bopper and Popcorn (Cocke Co)

  • this version was good but George Jones'sis better

  • Far the best version...! R I p jiles perry.

  • This is a great song

Thank you for the information about this Song.

    Thank You

  • This is my fav Big Bopper song - it sure moves

  • which would win a "Bop" or a "Thump"?:)

  • Hey gawdamsonuvabich - Prick!!!

  • Hé dumbo's.... White Lightning is an original of the great J.P. Richardson and the shit cover of that amateur....what was his name Jones? We forget that rubbish immediately. Throw that in the dustbin.

The Big Bopper is the name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this version sucks.

  • @washington95

    - the release date of Big Bopper's Mercury LP (that contained the track) is not easy to track down. The net gives several dates. Sure is only that it was before his tragic death, the backcover of the LP doesn't mention his death in the liner notes. I think it came out in 1958 (after his "Chantilly Lace" sucess). The George Jones version came out as a single in February 1959. So I believe that Big Bopper not only wrote the song, he also released it before George Jones.

  • @blackeyedjoe

No offense at all to The Big Bopper, but gotta love George "Thumper" Jones!

  • I'm not going to act like I know it all. I seriously though George was the orignal. Love this version though.

  • As much as I love George Jones.. This blows his version away!!

  • @muggymuggy1234 than you dont know country

  • Great video. Tnx! Always really liked the line, "...a city-slicker came and he said I'm mighty tough I think I wanna taste that powerful stuff, took one slug and drank it right down and I heard him-a moanin'-a as he hit the ground..." Git city-slickers! lol BB own version is IMHO superior to G Jones or anybody others as none possesses the humor and his unimitable pronounciation of almost every syllable in this song (and many more songs he did)

  • @gangerollo

Have you ever heard his son doing this one? He did a CD called "the legacy of the big bopper" - check it out if you don't know it, his version is brill too...ok, some double-tracked vocals here and there but other than that its pretty much the same

  • @addylewis No I haven't though I have seen his son doing "Chantilly Lace" etc. I know that he do or did a show in same style as his father. Damn, that I can't at this moment, remember his name. Makes one wonder that Big Boppers son now is much older than Big Bopper was when he got killed. What the heck happened with all the time aka the future one saw like a never ending stretch of opportunites.

  • Sweeet Saasssy Molasssy!!!!!

  • Nothing better than the original. Most excellent. Thank you.

  • @sunmines

    I agree with you.

  • cracy

  • Classic Big Bopper. Just love it!

  • Thier makin a film about the Bopper at last this was one of his best tunes kicks arse

  • @Promoagent Though it's a long way to go before that film is out. They are in the process getting money/funds so they can start filming but no cast etc yet.

  • Big Bopper in yo face!

  • A Fantastic recording Bopper...You were GREAT !!!!!!!!

  • Big BOpper Is Amazing

  • me and a couple of friends met him at Save Alot and hes really cool

  • Oh Bopper You Know what i like!

  • Oh Bopper You Know what i like!

  • The first time I heard this version of the song, I instantly like it over the George Jones version. It's just, well, more Rock and Roll and less country, I guess.

  • Very Nice! Like the song as much as the slide show ! I gave it 5 stars !:)

  • THIS A GREAT artist, THE BIG BOPPER, is a great artist to listen too.. Thanks for the video.

  • Great song, great slideshow too. Thx :)

  • Indeed this versoin is awsome. That said, the pix of the Big Bopper with Buddy Holly and Richie Valens gave me goosebumps.

  • Love this version, I just read that he wrote it. :)

  • lol ol possum is George jones

  • Always have loved the song as recorded by George Jones.I always knew that The Big Bopper wrote it,but never had heard this version. Thanks for posting,it sounds great.

  • Ol possum does this song wayyyyyyyyy better

  • @oklahomacowboy12345 True that tastes are different but comments below me kinda decrease the worth of the ORIGINAL without that other version wouldn't even exist... A Shame that most people have to compare it to a cover instead of just liking it.

Btw, this song is my favourite buy Big Bopper.

  • thanks.

  • whiiiiiite lightinin!

  • i rather this version, its awesome =, ^^
