Rode a lift up an Appenzell mountain one crisp day, October 1972. Pasture still green, ground beneath each tree was covered by a bright circle of autumn's leaves. The lift was quiet, cowbells audible. And then I saw the beautiful brown cows.
Toasted the Swiss with a bottle of fresh apple juice, gloriously fermented, al fresco with brown cows.
