John Wayne's last hurrah. he knew he was dying- both literally and figuratively- so he made a movie about a dying gunfighter... of course the undercurrent of modern times was pulling, both IN the movie and in the moviemaking, i think The Duke wanted it this way...
John "Duke" Wayne fully intended to keep making movies. It turned out, ironically enough, he got cancer (again). Strange how his character also suffered from that wicked disease...But what a way to go out! Won't spoil the ending of this great little film by telling how it occurred.
It may not be the best John Wayne movie of all time but in a way it shows his career of when he first started out in old Hollywood and how everything was changing just like the charecter
I don't think any other movie star ever did, or ever will, go out with such a fitting movie as John Wayne did. He was a legend, the epitome of what a man should be and looms much, much larger than any of the present day leading men.
I agree with you. he was nathan brittles, ethan edwards, the legendary davy crockett and The Shootist, John B. Books. But first of all, he was JOHN WAYNE, the greatest of all western stars.

Awesome movie. What a great way for a legend like John Wayne to go out.

I cried Man Tears when the Duke was gunned down. It was hard to see my boyhood hero die.

My favorite Wayne flick. A classic. Superb cast and script. Wayne and Bacall, two old Pros show everyone how movies are supposed to be made.
