Never in a thousand years - they are polar opposites in their understanding of economics. I am not sure how you can listen to Steve and not recognize that. Ron Paul, and libertarianism in general, has little concern for the poor. Steve, and democratic socialists like him, have that as a primary concern. He is singing about Guthrie and Goldman as heroes, for Pete's sake.
@nilradem Since when does Ron Paul not care about the poor? They both care about freedom, they both oppose the wars, they want what's best for this country. I seriously doubt they're polar opposites. Maybe you have Ron Paul confused with someone else. He's the only hope we got.
Ron Paul is a libertarian. On economic issues, that means a rejection of programs that aid the poor such as a national health care system, which Earle supports. Earle is supporting Occupy Wall Street at the moment. I am sure Paul thinks his positions help "all Americans", but they would let the rich get richer. Earle has always been critical of trickle down economics (listen to Snake Oil from 1988.) Sure, they agree on some issues, but Earle's no libertarian.
And though he is "to the left of a democrat," Steve has also been open about voting for Obama as the best choice. I don't really want to argue about the politics - you and I clearly disagree - but I do think you have Earle's politics wrong.
@nilradem Yeah I don't wanna argue either, I'm more a fan of his music honestly. Is he still a fan of Obama or was he one of many who got ran over by the bandwagon I wonder.
Based on interviews I have read, I think Steve is like many on the far left who saw from the beginning that Obama is a moderate and wouldn't be the reformer we might like. Not to mention that it was clear that even moderate change would be hard with a Republican congress. Steve supported Obama as the best choice and I doubt that's changed. But anyone who feels that way wouldn't vote libertarian. If anything, it would be a Green party or socialist third party.
northernmuse9---Steve Earle is still "allowed" in the US for the same reason you are allowed. It's freedom of speech and the fact we have a Constitution that promises you you won't wake up with a bullet in your head for speaking what you feel.
@frankmiller95 Steve Earle will be the best when he has 1 hair left on his head. saw him in July, he's getting pretty slick on top, but always always will be my hero.
Yep, that's definitely Nanci Griffith. Too bad they didn't work out a 3-part harmony. ;-)
Could you please post the year this concert took place? Steve Earle tells so much truth in his songs I'm surprised he's still allowed to in the Amerikka of today.
Hot dang, I love this man's artistic output! One of the top two or three of a dying breed in music - Musician/Poet/Activist/Songwriter. We need all of his skills now more than ever before!!
Man, this is beautiful, Steve has the the torch Townes Van Zandt handed off to him. Is he ever gonna team up with Ron Paul or what?
