When my Mum was dying we more or less did exactly this. It was a way of letting everyone know what was happening and she updated her facebook quite regularly in the last few days. Lots of her close friends lived overseas and there was no way for them to get to her bedside. I would read out their messages to her and I think that they did make her happier. For some reason she didn't realise just how important she was to so many people till that time.

Yes, probably quite shallow. I do agree. However it was a very good form of communication, particularly as these sorts of things don't keep to the normal clock, and happen in the middle of the night or when everyone is at work. It's in a way a lot better than group emails and that sort of thing as it's a bit easier for people to support eachother, not just the person who's dying.
