I love Gil Melle's main title theme here. It really exposes his Jazz roots because it swings like crazy! The eary to mid 70s were a great time for Jazz-influenced film and TV scores. Gil also scored the Six Million Dollar Man pilot movie called "Cyborg".
Yeah, what's up with that? I recognized the Kolchak theme immediately. So which show was the music originally written for? Questor and Kolchak were both produced in 1974.
Questor was one of the finest sf pilots ever made,a shame that the network never picked it up. Questor did receive a second life of sorts on Star Trek:The Next Generation. Someone proposed reviving the Questor premise by having on board the starship Enterprise an android who sought its humanity & the part of Data was born.
leonard nimoy from star trek was picked to play questor but he had a falling out with roddenberry the other reason why this never made it to show status was because the six million dollar man had just came out and nbc thought both shows were be the same but they were not one show was about half man half machine the other was about a full robot that looked like a man well done movie
Glad to see that this is here!! However there is 5:45 (or between 5:45.0... - 6:44.9...mins.) missing. I total all 12 parts and they equal 94:15 and the movie is 100 (which would mean from 100:00.0... - 100:59.9..., but less than 101:00.0...). Is that just credits or is there part of the story (action, plot, etc.) missing in that time? Thanks.
I think it would be really cool if the sci-fi channel did a marathon of some of these great old shows like questor tapes, man from atlantis, the phoenix, space 1999, and maybe even Isis and Shazam from the old saturday morning shows.
I have followed every android story created by, or for Gene Roddenberry. From Ruk, Rayna Kapec, Andrea, Questor, Data, Lore. Lal, Juliana Tainer, B4. Even the robot known as Nomad... Watching how Roddenberry dealt with logic, reason, and emotions wrap in a machine always intrigued me since I was a child. It is part of the reason I chose to be a programmer. I even tried creating software that was self aware. WARNING: Always backup your computer before you activate such a program. ;O)
Always install an "on/off" switch within easy reach! And (spoiler alert!!!!) NEVER, NO NEVER, NEVER EVER, install within your android anything that can destroy the world if the android goes rogue. Just good rules to live by.
I also saw this film when I was very young and never forgot it. I found a paperback of it when I was 10 and read it and the story has stayed with me all these years. Do you think Gene had any idea his work would effect America and the world the way it has.? Wait...What if Gene was a Questor bot!
I remember seeing this when it was first broadcast. Thought it was a great story then and feel the same today. Thanks very much for putting it on-line. By the way, I did a Google search and found a company that started selling this on DVD just this past February, for only $12.
MCA/Universal had a habit of "recycling" its TV music scores {as well as reediting its short-lived TV series into "feature films" here and abroad} into other projects, 'Echo'. If they felt a few bars of Gil Melle's score from "The Questor Tapes" would be a perfect theme for "KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER"- and save them money- that's what they did!
Note the music cue at 1:14- composer Gil Melle would later use THAT as his theme for Universal's "KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER" (1974-'75). "Questor", incidentally, was also the name of Gary Clarke's character in another unsold Roddenberry pilot: a half-hour crime drama he and Desilu tried to sell to NBC in 1966- "POLICE STORY".
Music wasn't the only thing they recycled. Much of the Questor lab props came from the movie "The Andromeda Strain". And some of that was also used in a Kolchak episode (Spanish Moss Murders). They got a lot of use out of those stainless steel walls and consoles.
Like most Roddenberry pilots: ahead of its time and foolishly over-looked.
Although dated, it has many intriguing concepts like Spectre and Genesis II....when I think of the shit that made it to 70's TV, it is such a shame we never saw these made into series!
And jellionastick...Thank you! I saw this when it originally aired with my parents. It brought back good memories.
jellieonastick, you are my shining hero! I looked for this series four years ago and found nothing - that is, until You & You Tube came along. Cheers!!!
Cool that Majel Barrett is in this! Bonking Roddenberry must have had its perks.....

Hey, is that Majel Barrett?
So sad that she died.

Don't feel sad for someone like Majel Barrett, who lived a long and fruitful life.
Feel sad for those that don't.

Amen to that! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Questor. I even have a paper back written by DC fontana.
The music is lifted from Kolchak! Since this was a pilot, I assume it's there for budget, just to show the feel.
Awesome! Thanks for posting, my...friend...
