Listen dear you can't just turn the engine off doing 70 on the highway because you are making a video for youtube, and then slow down without brakes and indicators to the hard shoulder, that's very dangerous.
Especially in USA, where people is averagely very stupid. You could have a crash and then have to explain that to the cops...
When the 2010 Prius does accelerate out of control it does it very quickly....not in the usual slow manner. Mine has done it once when I use cruise control to speed up a little. Thankfully, the brakes worked to slow the car and over rode the cruise control.
This is indeed useful to know. But in ANY CAR, not just Prius, and not just electric, your plan of action must be as follows:
First, apply the brakes. If your car has correctly functioning brakes, your foot firmly planted on the brake pedal MUST OVERRIDE ANY ENGINE ACCELERATION -- INTENDED OR NOT!
If for some reason brakes don't work, then shift to neutral. Car will slow down and eventually stop.
If everything else fails, turn the key and kill the engine -- then apply the brakes gently.
@dmitriy40 Don't forget, you can always turn the key off just long enough for the engine to stop running and then turn it right back on (without starting the engine) to eliminate the chance of the steering wheel locking.
people like you ruin this country. complain about everything..... you should have gotten hit as a child, maybe youd be worried about more important things.
@wootness3000 You'll bet I live down South? Did you come to that conclusion after looking at my channel with the giant Texas flag on it? YAWN
So your answer is, yes, yes, and yes? Thanks! And only hicks say "pick-up" anyways. They're called "trucks." But no, I drive an all-time 4x4 V8 Jeep. Too bad the pollution involved in making those batteries in the Prius trumps the pollution out of my V8 jeep.
@mtb416 Enjoy $4/gallon gas with your V8. You're a symbol of anti-progression in the states. I'd also like to point out that only hicks drive "trucks," or live in Texas. I'm not sure if you should drive your Jeep anyway, you know at one point they had a recall for the shifter moving out of place and causing the vehicle to roll on it's own. Danger, danger. All companies make mistakes, Toyota is no exception.
@wootness3000 Gas is $2.50 and I go to places where your Prius would be entirely useless. I must have a vehicle such as this, so go ahead and continue being ignorant. Not to mention mathematical retarded. You really plan on driving that hybrid long enough to get back that surcharge? You better hope those batteries, which are absolutely terrible for the environment, last long enough to work that back.
And my Jeep is still working/looking fantastic and it's an 01'. Later Fanboy!
@mtb416 I don't drive a hybrid, I have two cars. A '95 Camry with 250K miles on it and a '02 Impala with 113K which is currently in the shop, again. I find that unless you tow something, having a V8 in any kind of car now a days is pointless. My sister's RAV 4 doesn't have any trouble going anywhere my Dad's Wrangler can, but it doesn't need 4L worth of engine to do it. I just hate people like you, raving about your shitty American cars. About those Impala fires.. that killed 37 people...
@wootnes3000 You "hate" me? Again, you prove my fanboy theory to the T.
Funny you say 'shitty' American cars while Toyota is still in the midst of litigation involving the blatant lying and pushing back of recalls that involved the deaths of people. And GM's are shitty, that's why I never drove one. Again, your assumptions are incorrect while mine have been spot on. Again, I've had zero problems with my Jeep and Ford products, so you're flat wrong in that respect.
@mtb416 You're assumptions are incorrect in the worst degree. I'm willing to bet you've never owned a Toyota, youngin'. I went from American cars to Japanese cars because of their lack of reliability, fuel economy, safety, and quality. GM kept their recalls under wraps for a reason, they didn't want the public to know. Ford has done the same with cruise control system related fires, I had a Taurus before my Camry that had so many problems by the time I sold it it was worth scrap.
@wootness3000 Are you illiterate? I said all companies have problems/recalls. Funny how a "youngin" actually understands the facts surrounding Toyota's recall and the "oldin" doesn't. Sounds like you need to drop some pride, as it is clouding your judgment.
Toyota makes good cars, I never said it didn't. I'm just disappointed that they don't give a shit about their American consumers, blamed American part dealers for Toyota's own computer problems, and killed people by their negligence.
@wootness3000 And considering you're telling me that RAV4's can compete off-road with a Jeep Wrangler proves to me that you have absolute no understanding of true off-road driving, which is the type of driving I must do from time to time. That comment is ridiculous and flat wrong. What are you talking about? Dirt roads?! ha!
@mtb416 Snow, dirt, rough terrain. Average people don't go off-road, therefore the average car doesn't need to be able to go off-road. I've never even became stuck in my Camry the whole 15 years I've been driving it. Toyota didn't lie, they thought they'd found the solution, applied it, and when it wasn't the correct one the AMERICAN government took the opportunity to support their business (GM) in order to make them look better so it was completely blown out of proportion.
@wootness3000 Who said I was "average?" Off-road a RAV4 is absolutely useless and simply would not stand up to the test I have to put my Jeep through at times. Toyota did lie. Internal documents were exposed revealing their unwillingness to issue the recall they knew had to be issued. In fact, an executive was even caught bragging (in an e-mail I believe) of the millions of dollars that it saved the company. Honestly, you sound completely ignorant. Which is not at all surprising. KAMIKAZE!!!! HA
@mtb416 Internal documents? Or fraud? There's two sides to every story. I think you need to actually look at your sources, the news? Funded by the.. what? Government. It appears you're a fanboy of American crap-shoots, amazing considering you live in Texas and drive a Jeep, not. Biased is as biased does. I've owned both, driven both, and hate one. I don't care if Toyota received a bailout, that's not what this is about.
@wootness3000 Two sides? Literally buddy, go do a quick Google search before you tell me I'm wrong. I'm appalled by your ignorance on this subject. Truly. Go. Do. Some. Research.
@mtb416 I think you're reading/seeing what you want to. Here's a statement from the Huffington Post "Though Toyota is unsure the exact cause of the described problem they recommend owners remove their driver-side floor mats before taking part in the recall." Two sides. Who's being ignorant? You. You refuse to even look at the other side.
@mtb416 Actually, I am a fanboy. I've never been wronged by this company, and never had a problem with their cars. I'd like to point out to you your Jeep's crash test rating, 3 stars. Marginal. I'd like to point out my Camry's, which is 6 years older, 4 stars. Acceptable. Not only that, but my car is worth more than yours, even have 230K miles. Don't believe me, check blue book. So go on, enjoy your clumsy, roll-prone, ugly, fat, manuverless, inefficient SUV and stop trolling on Toyota videos.
@wootness3000 You need to do your homework, as you do not at all have the facts. Fanboys RARELY have facts. They're too busy defending their beloved tastes.
And another thing, Toyota received a bailout from the Japanese government, FORD is the only large automaker NOT to receive a bailout in any form. Again, go do some homework and get back to me. OK you anti-American little fool?
@mtb416 I've done more research than you, from sources outside of the U.S. news that aren't biased about Toyota stealing their business. Therefore I'm more educated on the topic.
@wootness3000 LMAO, did you seriously just use the Huffington Post as "research"? That site might as well be the personal blog of a bunch of liberals. It is not credible in the least (why MSNBC uses it all day). You're "more educated" my ass.
@wootness3000 And of course all companies make mistakes, but I'm not so sure they were got so deeply in a lie that caused the deaths of many people, all the while bragging about "millions of dollars saved." At least not in recently memory.
Also, it's the largest in automobile history. So I guess Toyota does raised the standard! haha
Ok people let me break the myths for you. That sudden acceleration is crap, pedal may only get stuck under mat if 2 high, thats all. Similar thing happened to Audi back in the 80s. 2nd, Priuses, and Hybrids for that matter are overpriced junk. Only someone who has no understanding of cars and/or buying would get one. If you wana save money, buy a small engined car with a lower sticker price. If you want to spend 22g anyways, buy a Volkswagen, at least its more car with excellent refinement.
@VancouverCanucksRock I'm pretty sure the steering only locks when the car is in PARK. With a dead engine steering does become much heavier, but unless you are in a middle of a sharp curve (where you shouldn't be speeding anyway), that heavier steering will still allow you to pull over nicely and safely.
But of course you knew that already, since you are an expert driver, who is smart enough to make comments about driving.
Toyota's problem is defiantly in the ECM, none of that floor mat crap. So when your ECM or the entire computer module itself goes haywire, how can you shut it off? And when a car accelerates out of control, the average person will panic and wont be able to think nearly as logically as when they are calm and probably won't think to put it in neutral which is your best bet unless that too is electronically controlled. I laughed when you floored it. Toyota: moving forward, even if you don't want to
I'll Buy A Toyota Because I Know What To Do If It Accelerates (Which Everyone Probably Knows) So If You Know What To Do Why Not. Plus They Have REALLY Good Deals Right Now!
@PhotoMedia12 seriously?I would never buy a new car off the lot. Never ever never. To me, that is throwing money away. The second you drive off the lot, 1/3 the value is gone. If you rent, well thats really an expensive way to commute, mile for mile. Buy a used car, fix it up, put a new engine in(japs throw away a lot of good engines),and drive it for 300,000 miles, then do it again if I like the car. Of course Toyota is putting in all this electronic junk to prevent people from doing this.
@PhotoMedia12 Thats great logic there. Pay 60 K for all this electronic stuff that doesnt work, and get a car that you cant even drive. Why would you want to get a car that you can drive because you think you know what to do (lets see what you do when you are first in line at a red light and your car takes off into the intersection) when you can pay less money and get a car that does what it is supposed to do, without killing drivers?
Milhouse has some very interesting and original spellings of common words. Garentee. GARENTEE!! (hard to call it a typo when you do it 2 times in a row). If I hear one more person talking about BREAKS and STEARING, I am going to scream. Yeah milhouse, "them brakes are the breaks." Or should I say "them breaks are the brakes". Would Jersey hill happen to be in Arkansas? I am laughing so hard, I am going to pea.
what the fuck are you talking about? panic? why the fuck this same damn officers dont get panic when abuse their authority, he was an idiot and a chicken, thats why he died? lol. a lady can do this why an idiot officer cant? by the way if any dont want their toyota, ill take it with out even think it.
What are you talking about, abiuse his authority? How did he abuse his authority? You fucking nip bastard toyota shills are the lowliest pieces of shit on the planet. The lady whoi survived was on a straight open stretch of freeway. The cop was on a winding secondary road, loaded with traffic, and died when he came to a T. You are totally clueless about the whole incident.
The cop and his family died by my house. It isnt a highway, but almost could be considered a local street. It is a 2 lane road, windy, and has T intersections. Everybody saw him come over the hill at around 150 mph as the investigators said. There were flames coming off of what was left of the brakes, that burned through instantly. He was desperately trying to avoid other cars, but when he reached the T, there was no way he could make that turn at 150 mph. They all died in a fireball.
Why is it that the people who have such harsh words for the innocent victims that died, the same people who seem to have the least understanding of what happened? The lady who survived the runaway lexus was on an open, straight stretch of freeway, with no traffic. She said she was trying eveything, brakes, ignition, transmission, NOTHING responded. She was able to ride it out, and eventually the car's computer system reset itself. She was very lucky. People who were on busy roads died.
so eleonidas, your favorite book is la biblia? Is that were they teach you that smart ass attitude, total disrespect for innocent victims and the dead? We are talking about an entire famile that died here, because of corporate greed. Every week there are more and more cases. Listen to the poor girls story on youtube who crashed with her family in Northern CA bay area, and her father broke his neck and is now a quadrapalegic.
Its good you want to buy a toyota, because the dealers are about as busy as the maytage repairman these days. Tell me, why do you think Toyota announced a massive reall of the Prius in Japan, at the same time they are calling all the accidents "driver error, or fraud" in the US? Is it some strange coincidence that driver error only occurs in cars made by Toyota? Have we been overtaken by a wave of modern kamikazi's, maiming and killing themselves to make Toyota look bad?
@Jellolion1 When I look at NHTSA's website where this is all detailed, they are aware of a total of two accidents with five fatalities. Both accidents were due to a rubber floor mat holding down the gas pedal. That is it. Look it up yourself.
Electrical techniciamn Bill Fusion " I want more information on the cars braking systems, and I want to test the car on the extremely steep grades found on 8 east were the problem in Sikes car was first trigered. Fusion:"They are not field testing this car in the real world. They need to try to duplicate the conditions, not just takethis car for a spin around qualcomm stadium parking lot." Others expressed anger by what they saw as Toyota making efforts to discredit Sikes.
San Diego Union Tribune "examination of the prius showed a large anount of brake dust and brake pad material in and around the wheels. The brake pads were worn down to what appeared to be metal on metal contact. Toyota confirmed the brake wear, but said it probably came from Sikes tappng the brakes lightly. Bob Snow "There is no way this man would risk his lifeand others, going at those high speeds. Toyota is trying to protect the company by discrediting Sikes."
2) Safety Regulations: The manager who can save the most money by circumventing government regulations, faking inspections and faking compliance gets a bonus and as promotion
3) Quality Control: This is an every that you can save big bucks on by skimping, faking and lying. Potential again for bonus and promotion
4) When there is a safety incident, lie, lie, lie, fake data, destroy data, lie some more, and defraud.
Bonus points: Bonus points are awarded to any manger who can demoralize and destroy the lives of innocent incident survivors through slander. Half credit for disrespect of the dead .
@Jellolion1 Ladies and gentlemen, here is Toyota's latest addition to its Car-O-Death lineup. You can pay up to 60K for this vehicle, that drives like an overloaded, beat UHaul truck. It won the prestigious "DO NOT BUY" rating from Consumer Reports. 300 Roll over lawsuits and more on the way.
March 18, 2010. San Diego Union Tribune Headlines: "CHP Report Confirms Sikes's Story" The CHP officer reported he found Sikes driving as he appeared to be standing on the brakes with his back arched, and hanging on to the wheel with both hands. After the car was stopped on the hill, Sikes emerged pale and shaky. A medical technician confirmed extremely high pulse and blood prssure, and said Sikes was in a state of shock. Sikes tried to hide in the ambulance when he saw reporters arrive. "
He is dead, along with his family members. Killed by a toyota deathrap POS. Have you ever seen that look in a persons eyes just before they are killed, when they realize they are going to die, along with everybody else in the car, and there is nothing they can do about it? The panic subsides and the person just gives up. At that very moment, he told the other occupants to start praying, then they all died.
The car takes off, accelerated at top speed, reching 150 mph. Full panic sets in instantly. The car shouldnt be doing this!! Put on the brakes!! My god, it has no effect!! Press harder, then harder!! The brakes are gone now and fire is coming out from the wheels!! Hold on and try to steer away from other traffic!! Press harder on the brakes!!! Full blown panic!!Oh no, an intersection!! We are going to die now!!...explosion. fire. death. Stupid? What if that was your son?
The CHP officer saw Sikes standing up on the brakes, in full blown panic, with a death grip on the wheel. He was in so much fear he didnt want to take his hand off the wheel for a second to try the emergency brake. He was only going 90 mph, on an empty highway. Now image someone going 150 mph, on a 2 lane road packed with cars, driving an unfamiliar, complex car. Yes, you are so smart. He was just stupid.
el leonidas, hard ass. Panic is as foreign to him as the language of nomadic tribes in mongolia. He is inches a way from death every day, and as cool as a cucumber. When events are screaming out of control, and he finds himself hurtling through space, totally out of control, his pulse stays at 50. Psychologists have a name for a person like that. Such a person is called a Psychopath.
The point is that people pay a lot of money for these cars. They dont want a car that they have to worry weather or not it will decide to kill them today or next week. Thats called a LEMON, worse-a deathtrap lemon, and there are Lemon Laws in most states in the US. Send those lemon death traps back to Toyota and get your money back.
Jellolion 1, I am going to make the conclusion at this point that you are a dick who likes to hear himself talk and that trying to explain in everyone of your comments how you're wrong will just simply be a waist of my time. I am sorry for the inconvenience about not giving you more ways to shoot your mouth off about. Sincerely, Millystarr
Ha. You are going to make the conclusion that you better run for the hills, because I have the facts on my side. Yeah, I am wrong you say, along with the california highway patrolman on the scene, and mechanical engineering professors from Univ. of CA, San Diego. You know more than all of them, right? All of you comments are nonsophisticated, laymans point of view-which is totally wrong. Go read something about systems quality control testing and you may start to understand. Probably not.
No I have concluded that you are mad because you have to quote others and that you also simply like to run your mouth off. Also all you say about Toyota is your point of view and I laugh at how many of your comments are so wordy I don't even feel like reading them because my brain will melt from stupidity. The credibility of the professors in California can be questioned because any GOOD Master Toyota Technician can probably make the car do exactly what they made it do.
yea, you sound really smart. I am just mad, because I quote engineering professors, and you are only drawling from your obviously VERY limited understanding. Toyota never did the sytems qualiuty control testing in the first place, because they cut corners, and now people are dying. And no, your local toyota technician is NOT qualified to find a problem such as this. The first step would be to design the instrumentationto test the individual components, then progress to systems.
the stuff you say really makes you sound dumb and opinionated about things for which you do not understand. I am so sorry you are about as bright as a 15 watt light bulb, and you are unable to read my posts. I will have to dumb it down for you. I think your brain must have melted from stupidty a long time ago. Maybe you were born that way.
does your local Toyota dealership mechanic design automated scientific instrumentation to do quality control testing for the manufacturer? The job of the local mechanic is to fix cars, and they do it by replacing entire systems. It is very common that people experience problems that mechanics cant reproduce. It is not their job to go into the design of individual components, nor do they troubleshoot the software. This is way over their capabilities.
"any GOOD Master Toyota Technician can probably make the car do exactly what they made it do. " Really? You dont read a newspaper, do you? This is EXACTLY the crux of the matter, trying to reproduce the malfuction, because once you discover how to reproduce it, then you will be able to fix it. Why do you think Edmunds is offering 1 million dollar reward to the first person that can demonstrate what the problem is? Of course Toyota knows exactly what the problem is. It is electronic/software.
You obviously dont have a clue about the nature of intermittant electronic and sofware problems. Toyota shills taking Sikes car for a spin around Qualcomm stadium doesnt prove shit. To find these problems takes an enormous effort. Millions of reps of testing under all kinds of different conditions and circumstances are required to try to find the exact set of conditions that make the cars go haywire. If Toyota doesnt know this, that is pretty scary.Obviously Toyota isnt big into quality control
Jon Isaacs, diesel mechanic and research engineer at UCSD, in San Diego Tribune, March 17" ..I was not suprised that the Toyota technician could NOT reproduce the problem with Sikes car. What suprised me was that Toyota expectedthat it could reproduce the problem so easily. A computer glitch, or design flaw, or heat issue in one of the chips, or mechanical flaw would be expected to to require a VERY SPECIAL COMBINATION OF CONDITIONS to result in a malfunction. "
Isaacs, cont. "Accordingly, arepetition of the event would require re-creating those EXACT conditions. My expectations would be that thoroughly testing Sikes car would take SEVERAL MONTHS, not a couple of hours. As a truck mechanic, it was always easier to place the blame on the driver. I know from experience that this is the wrong attitude." EXACTLY what I have been saying all along. What do I need proof for? I am saying you are totally misinterpreting the nature of the problem.
Oh, you mean that hill by your 200 sq ft apartment in Yokohama? Screw you. Toyota is fucked. And also, ask your bosses if they realize that they are one plea bargain away from a slander libel suite. They probably dont understand how US law works, but what you guys did to Sikes was criminal. How will it look for Toyota with a slander suite on top of all of the lies and cover ups? Your company is FUCKED!!!
Jellolion1 I live in the beautiful country side right beside the highest point in my township staring out at beautiful valleys in THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Check someones profile before you go saying stuff like that next time. Jersey hill btw, yeah you mine as well be on a roller coaster because it jerks your stomach about just as much as one. Also, GET A FUCKING LIFE AND STOP WAISTING YOUR TIME POSTING SUCH SHIT ON YOUTUBE GET A JOB SO THAT IM NOT PAYING TAXES THAT PAY FOR YOUR EXPENSES.
you are a lying jap shill for Toyota. You are paid to spread confusion about the incidents, with your totally incorrect version of the accidents and incidents.
MillyStar is a jap shill for Toyota. I know from your id that you are bonafide. I think the reason the people in the Prius are better off when these cars go haywire is that it has a weaker engine. Where Sikes was driving has some very steep uphill grades. As soon as he got on one of those hills, he could use whatever brakes he had left to bring it under control. The people who are really screwed are the lexus drivers, with 300 hp, stopping is close to impossible. These are the people who die.
Jellolion1 I live in the United States, I was raised in the United States, and I was born in the United States. Why dont you do all of us a favor and keep your OPINIONS to yourself?
you dont think he had driver training like all cops do? Maybe he couldnt do it BECAUSE HIS FREAKIN CAR WAS GOING HAYWIRE. He crashed right by my house. He came over the hill going close to 150 mph, and fire was coming off of his brakes. The whole family died at the bottom of the hill in a fireball.
@ethen24 not too much grass on the side of the road in San Diego, especially in the mountains. The side of the road gave Sikes and his family a nice spot to die though. More victims of a corrupt car company.
Excellent video. If you look close, you can see that when the car is shut off, the transmission kicks into neutral automatically. A great safety feature. Anyone holding a driving license should be able to bring a car to stop no matter what the condition. Safety training and testing should be part of obtaining a driving license in the US just like all other developed nations. But unfortunately, politics gets in the way.
Oh really. What about a car like the lexus es300? A very complex car, with features most drivers have never seen before, and a 300 horsepower engine. When you rent a car, do you insist on only renting cars that identical to your car at home? You never rent a car that is unfamiliar to you? Do you insist on taking a class before driving off the rental lot?
listen to the tough guy. I am sure driving at 150 mph on a winding mountain roud packed with traffic and no brakes is something you do every day, right? With a cigarette and a cut of coffee in your hand. He didnt buy the car. It was a rental, so he was unfamiliar with the features, as most people would be. Pushbutton ignition, electronic trnsmission, 300 hp engine, and a throttle that sticks full open without warning are things that would take getting used to.
@ElLeonidas2009 I got a good car for you. It comes with great recommendations. Its called the Lexus GX460. Another in the long line of DEATH CARS from Toyota.
So politics gets in the way? What politics might you be referring to? So in your perfect world, drivers should be certified to drive the particular type of car that they own? If you buy a new car, you need to take another written and driving test, to make sure you can operate it properly?
Someone below says "all your videos show is under normal conditions, its not a normal condition that is causing the problem". What is your definition of not driving in a normal condition? Anyone not driving a car in a normal condition should not be driving at all. They are danger to other drivers. Did anyone notice that when the car was shut off, the transmission kicked into NEUTRAL automatically? The overwhelming majority of accidents are caused by human error or neglect. Do your research.
@hr96ad normal conditions as in the computer has not failed and is working correctly, an abnormal condition would be like it losing communication with the motor on the engine. think of your desk top computer, normally works just like it should but say your power supply goes bad and sends to much voltage to your cpu, your cpu over heats and dies, and the computer doesn't work like is should, and is unable to do any of its normal functions. thats what i ment by normal conditions.
There are lots of engineers doing there research, and they say that driving a car around the block a few times doesnt test anything. To really test Sikes car, they need to work at recreating the exact conditions that Sikes was driving in. Thats what they are referring to. He was in a mountainous area. Toyota tested the car on flat ground. Anybody driving under normal conditions should not be driving at all? You are a freakin genious.
is somebody saying you cant steer? It becomes very difficult to turn the wheel, and this may cause people to panic if they are not expecting it, just as they may panic when they step on the brake as usual and it doesnt do anything. The family that died by my house had a lexus with a pushbutton ignition, and they couldnt get it to shut off. Everything happened pretty fast too. The guy was a cop. I do believe they get some driver training.
It should also be mentioned, when you go to such extremes, you just make the brand look weak, as it seems like you can't admit their faults. Every single vehicle I own is American, but I'm fully aware they arn't perfect. I can also admit that the Americans are NOWHERE near being solely responsible for automotive advancement. Hell, if you want to talk about "copying", the Americans "copied" the patent of a Swiss, and the alterations of a German. The automobile was copied from Karl Benz, a German,
you dimwit, there isnt a single person who could be called "soley responsible for the automobile". Did I say there was? I dont think so. Although the biggest player in the field of auto manufacturing was HENRY FORD, from the US!!! Did the americans copy a swiss patent??? Do you even know what a patent is?? And how they work??? Obviously not.
The purpose of a patent is to spread the idea within the scientific community, so others can expand apon the idea (you call it copying), while giving the original inventor 12-18 years of market exclusivity. Anybody can "copy a patent", for that is the whole idea-to advance science through the free exchange of inventions. You just cant market the idea if it is still within someones period of exclusivity. If you do, the inventor can sue you for the royalties. Geez, some people are just clueless.
all your videos show is under normal conditions, its not a normal condition that is causing the problem, newer cars don't have a steel cable from the peddle to the engine its all controlled by a few computers, ever have a blue screen or your desktop just lock up on your home computer, what do you think happens when that occurs on one of the many computers in the car from taking a hard bump or freezing every night, and pushing the stop button doesn't respond like the gas peddle doesn't respond
I think the reason they do it is for designing in obsolescense. When your car gets old, it just gets way too expensive if not impossible to fix. Ever try getting a mother board for a 1990's apple computer? May as well toss them in the garbage. Exactly what they want. Also, it becomes impossible to fix them yourself, or at the local garage. You will have to bring your car to the dealer for virtually all maintainance, except changing the tires.
When I hear people (non-engineers) saying the problem is that he is lying, or he mixed up the gas pedal and the brake, it really strikes me as a cover up. I heard a woman describe a problem where she couldnt stop her car with the brakes, and she tried shifting out of drive, but that did nothing (transmission is also electronic), it really sounds exactly like an electronic quality control problem.Toyota has been turning out these cars so fast, they didnt properly do quality control testing.
for a car in working condition. I just heard a mechanic explain that when a Toyota is at full throttle, the vacuum to the braking systems is reduced. There was a lexus that crashed by my house that had fire coming off of the brakes. Why couldnt it stop? We are talking about an INTERMITTANT problem. This is what all these people fail to understand. It isnt an every car, all the time problem. It is a small percentage of cars, a small percentage of the time. Thats what makes it so tricky.
Finally someone has been listening to the news! Yes even if you hold the gas full down AND the break full down THE BREAKS WILL OVER POWER THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR WILL STILL STOP thank you for knowing that
actually NO. I heard mechanics interviewed say that is the problem with Toyota. The brakes do not kill the throttle. In fact at full throttle, the engine robs the brakes of vacuum that they need to stop the car. Didnt you hear of all the other car crashes? A lexus by my house went by at close to 150 mph, with fire (FIRE!!) coming off the brakes. It crashed and a whole family died. Think he wasnt pressing on the brakes hard enough???
show me the proof. Show me a video of that lexus and get me the computer that will show the reve of the engine. DO YOU JUST LIKE TO HEAR YOURSELF TALK OR WHAT?
ohhh. listen to the expert now. " I thought we were talking about toyotas"? You are as dumb as a doornail. Who do you think makes lexus?? All the incidents we are talking about happened only in cars made by Toyota. Lexus is made by Toyota, So for some reason, only in toyotas do the drivers forget which pedal is the brake and which is the gas. You have that crack scientific mind.
"Hey, what is this Lexus shit???? I thought we were talking about Toyotas. You are so stupid. We are talking about toyotas and you go off talking about lexus. what an idiot. My daddy is a mechanic, and thats why I know so much about toyotas." -millhouse stark. Your posts are useful just as cheap commedy.
seriously though, I hard on the radio that toyota said the brakes showed signs of high temp damage, and extreme wear, exactly as you would expect. And they couldnt reproduce it, exactly as you would expect for an intermittant problem.
Quality control testers set up automated systems to test components millions of times, under varying extreme conditons. For Toyota to come back the next day and say they couldnt reproduce the problem therefore he is lying really strikes a nerve for me. There is NO WAY Toyota could have done even the most routine quality control testing in such a short period of time, let alone find a problem that is known to be tricky to find. If they could reproduce it, then the problem would be solved.
I hear a company that sounds like they are desperately trying to divert public attention away from the most obvious problem, which also happens to be the most expensive to fix, a quality control problem with their electronic design and/or engineering. Talk to any engineer and they will rattle off instantly a dozen possibilities that they would suspect, and they are all electronic isues , everything from power supply issues to rf interference, not drivers mixing up the gas pedal and the brake.
benefit from a class action lawsuit??? The only people that benefit from class action lawsuits are the lawyers, dipshit. The people who sign on to a class action lawsuit get about 20 bucks each if they win the law suit. Class action lawsuits are an invention of law firms to make money for themselves.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If this happens to you, you probably deserve it for buying a POS jellybean on wheels. It might be a plan of Toyota to actually kill off all homos that purchas a prius:)
yes and people don't realize they have to hold the gear shifter into N for 3 seconds for it to go into N because its spring loaded so idiots can't "bump" it and put the car in N now people are whining it wont go into N.... i guess you really can't fix stupid
in other words, the shifter is electronic too, and that explains why some people have said the shifter doesnt respond, just like the accelerator and brakes. You can fix shoddy designs and shoddy engineering.
No that just says people are STUPID! actually think about what you are saying the problem that this whole big recall is on is THE GAS PEDAL ELECTRONICS NOT THE SHIFTER ELECTRONICS
No shit. There was a woman interviewed on the news who survived from driving a runaway lexus. She said she tried to shift into neutral and nothing happened. The shifter is electronic too, just like the throttle. She said she rode it out, and eventually the whole system reset itself, and the car stopped. Kind of sounds exactly like what happened to Sikes. There isnt anybody who can say conclusively what the exact problem is at this time, except of course Toyota, who blames the driver.
yeah, thats why all these people are dying. They are all just stupid, right? Wow, wonder why nobody other than you and Toyota could come up with that one. Do you think they mixed up the brake and the gas pedal too? Why does that only happen on Toyota's?
So it's like my computer..

Thankfully, the brakes worked to slow the car and over rode the cruise control.

one thing that this proves is that the prius accelerates really slow

@randkprouductions no kidding the Prius is slow, it is designed for fuel economy, not racing.

wow i did not know that
atlantaboy1122 1 year ago
This is indeed useful to know. But in ANY CAR, not just Prius, and not just electric, your plan of action must be as follows:
First, apply the brakes. If your car has correctly functioning brakes, your foot firmly planted on the brake pedal MUST OVERRIDE ANY ENGINE ACCELERATION -- INTENDED OR NOT!
If for some reason brakes don't work, then shift to neutral. Car will slow down and eventually stop.
If everything else fails, turn the key and kill the engine -- then apply the brakes gently.
dmitriy40 1 year ago
@dmitriy40 Don't forget, you can always turn the key off just long enough for the engine to stop running and then turn it right back on (without starting the engine) to eliminate the chance of the steering wheel locking.

@mtb416 What? I'm just using the same logic you are. Do you hate Toyota that much? I bet you live down south and drive a pick-up.
wootness3000 1 year ago
@wootness3000 You'll bet I live down South? Did you come to that conclusion after looking at my channel with the giant Texas flag on it? YAWN
So your answer is, yes, yes, and yes? Thanks! And only hicks say "pick-up" anyways. They're called "trucks." But no, I drive an all-time 4x4 V8 Jeep. Too bad the pollution involved in making those batteries in the Prius trumps the pollution out of my V8 jeep.
mtb416 1 year ago
@mtb416 Enjoy $4/gallon gas with your V8. You're a symbol of anti-progression in the states. I'd also like to point out that only hicks drive "trucks," or live in Texas. I'm not sure if you should drive your Jeep anyway, you know at one point they had a recall for the shifter moving out of place and causing the vehicle to roll on it's own. Danger, danger. All companies make mistakes, Toyota is no exception.
wootness3000 1 year ago
@wootness3000 Gas is $2.50 and I go to places where your Prius would be entirely useless. I must have a vehicle such as this, so go ahead and continue being ignorant. Not to mention mathematical retarded. You really plan on driving that hybrid long enough to get back that surcharge? You better hope those batteries, which are absolutely terrible for the environment, last long enough to work that back.
And my Jeep is still working/looking fantastic and it's an 01'. Later Fanboy!
mtb416 1 year ago
@mtb416 I don't drive a hybrid, I have two cars. A '95 Camry with 250K miles on it and a '02 Impala with 113K which is currently in the shop, again. I find that unless you tow something, having a V8 in any kind of car now a days is pointless. My sister's RAV 4 doesn't have any trouble going anywhere my Dad's Wrangler can, but it doesn't need 4L worth of engine to do it. I just hate people like you, raving about your shitty American cars. About those Impala fires.. that killed 37 people...
wootness3000 1 year ago
@wootnes3000 You "hate" me? Again, you prove my fanboy theory to the T.
Funny you say 'shitty' American cars while Toyota is still in the midst of litigation involving the blatant lying and pushing back of recalls that involved the deaths of people. And GM's are shitty, that's why I never drove one. Again, your assumptions are incorrect while mine have been spot on. Again, I've had zero problems with my Jeep and Ford products, so you're flat wrong in that respect.
Now my next guess, Obamafan?
mtb416 1 year ago
@mtb416 You're assumptions are incorrect in the worst degree. I'm willing to bet you've never owned a Toyota, youngin'. I went from American cars to Japanese cars because of their lack of reliability, fuel economy, safety, and quality. GM kept their recalls under wraps for a reason, they didn't want the public to know. Ford has done the same with cruise control system related fires, I had a Taurus before my Camry that had so many problems by the time I sold it it was worth scrap.
wootness3000 1 year ago
@wootness3000 Are you illiterate? I said all companies have problems/recalls. Funny how a "youngin" actually understands the facts surrounding Toyota's recall and the "oldin" doesn't. Sounds like you need to drop some pride, as it is clouding your judgment.
Toyota makes good cars, I never said it didn't. I'm just disappointed that they don't give a shit about their American consumers, blamed American part dealers for Toyota's own computer problems, and killed people by their negligence.
mtb416 1 year ago
@wootness3000 And considering you're telling me that RAV4's can compete off-road with a Jeep Wrangler proves to me that you have absolute no understanding of true off-road driving, which is the type of driving I must do from time to time. That comment is ridiculous and flat wrong. What are you talking about? Dirt roads?! ha!
mtb416 1 year ago
@mtb416 Snow, dirt, rough terrain. Average people don't go off-road, therefore the average car doesn't need to be able to go off-road. I've never even became stuck in my Camry the whole 15 years I've been driving it. Toyota didn't lie, they thought they'd found the solution, applied it, and when it wasn't the correct one the AMERICAN government took the opportunity to support their business (GM) in order to make them look better so it was completely blown out of proportion.
wootness3000 1 year ago
@wootness3000 Who said I was "average?" Off-road a RAV4 is absolutely useless and simply would not stand up to the test I have to put my Jeep through at times. Toyota did lie. Internal documents were exposed revealing their unwillingness to issue the recall they knew had to be issued. In fact, an executive was even caught bragging (in an e-mail I believe) of the millions of dollars that it saved the company. Honestly, you sound completely ignorant. Which is not at all surprising. KAMIKAZE!!!! HA
mtb416 1 year ago
@mtb416 Internal documents? Or fraud? There's two sides to every story. I think you need to actually look at your sources, the news? Funded by the.. what? Government. It appears you're a fanboy of American crap-shoots, amazing considering you live in Texas and drive a Jeep, not. Biased is as biased does. I've owned both, driven both, and hate one. I don't care if Toyota received a bailout, that's not what this is about.
wootness3000 1 year ago
@wootness3000 Two sides? Literally buddy, go do a quick Google search before you tell me I'm wrong. I'm appalled by your ignorance on this subject. Truly. Go. Do. Some. Research.

@mtb416 I think you're reading/seeing what you want to. Two sides. Who's being ignorant? You. You refuse to even look at the other side.
wootness3000 1 year ago
@mtb416 Actually, I am a fanboy. I've never been wronged by this company, and never had a problem with their cars. I'd like to point out to you your Jeep's crash test rating, 3 stars. Marginal. I'd like to point out my Camry's, which is 6 years older, 4 stars. Acceptable. Not only that, but my car is worth more than yours, even have 230K miles. Don't believe me, check blue book. So go on, enjoy your clumsy, roll-prone, ugly, fat, manuverless, inefficient SUV and stop trolling on Toyota videos.
wootness3000 1 year ago
@wootness3000 You need to do your homework, as you do not at all have the facts. Fanboys RARELY have facts. They're too busy defending their beloved tastes.

She was able to ride it out, and eventually the car's computer system reset itself. She was very lucky. People who were on busy roads died.

@Jellolion1 When I look at NHTSA's website where this is all detailed, they are aware of a total of two accidents with five fatalities. Both accidents were due to a rubber floor mat holding down the gas pedal. That is it. Look it up yourself.

Jellolion1 1 year ago
No I have concluded that you are mad because you have to quote others and that you also simply like to run your mouth off. Also all you say about Toyota is your point of view and I laugh at how many of your comments are so wordy I don't even feel like reading them because my brain will melt from stupidity. The credibility of the professors in California can be questioned because any GOOD Master Toyota Technician can probably make the car do exactly what they made it do.
MillyStarr 1 year ago
yea, you sound really smart.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
the stuff you say really makes you sound dumb and opinionated about things for which you do not understand. I am so sorry you are about as bright as a 15 watt light bulb, and you are unable to read my posts. I will have to dumb it down for you. I think your brain must have melted from stupidty a long time ago. Maybe you were born that way.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
does your local Toyota dealership mechanic design automated scientific instrumentation to do quality control testing for the manufacturer? The job of the local mechanic is to fix cars, and they do it by replacing entire systems. It is very common that people experience problems that mechanics cant reproduce. It is not their job to go into the design of individual components, nor do they troubleshoot the software. This is way over their capabilities.
Jellolion1 1 year ago

Jellolion1 1 year ago

Jellolion1 1 year ago
tell me more about you paying taxes for me posting on youtube. How does that work??? Id love to hear your explanation.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
MillyStar is a jap shill for Toyota. I know from your id that you are bonafide. I think the reason the people in the Prius are better off when these cars go haywire is that it has a weaker engine. Where Sikes was driving has some very steep uphill grades. As soon as he got on one of those hills, he could use whatever brakes he had left to bring it under control. The people who are really screwed are the lexus drivers, with 300 hp, stopping is close to impossible. These are the people who die.

a girl can do it, why so many stupids can not, like the cop in san diego? lol
ElLeonidas2009 1 year ago
you dont think he had driver training like all cops do? Maybe he couldnt do it BECAUSE HIS FREAKIN CAR WAS GOING HAYWIRE. He crashed right by my house. He came over the hill going close to 150 mph, and fire was coming off of his brakes. The whole family died at the bottom of the hill in a fireball.

ethen24 1 year ago
@ethen24 not too much grass on the side of the road in San Diego, especially in the mountains. The side of the road gave Sikes and his family a nice spot to die though. More victims of a corrupt car company.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
Excellent video. If you look close, you can see that when the car is shut off, the transmission kicks into neutral automatically. A great safety feature. Anyone holding a driving license should be able to bring a car to stop no matter what the condition. Safety training and testing should be part of obtaining a driving license in the US just like all other developed nations. But unfortunately, politics gets in the way.
hr96ad 1 year ago
Jellolion1 1 year ago
just buy a damn old car, if you are that stupid
ElLeonidas2009 1 year ago
listen to the tough guy.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
when you crash and become a quadrapalegic, I will look for you to see if you have changed your opinion.

@ElLeonidas2009 I got a good car for you. It comes with great recommendations. Its called the Lexus GX460. Another in the long line of DEATH CARS from Toyota.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
@Jellolion1 death cars? cmon you see too much horror movies for sure, chicken i will buy a lexus one day, they are damn good and nice.
ElLeonidas2009 1 year ago
So politics gets in the way? What politics might you be referring to? So in your perfect world, drivers should be certified to drive the particular type of car that they own? If you buy a new car, you need to take another written and driving test, to make sure you can operate it properly?
Jellolion1 1 year ago
Someone below says "all your videos show is under normal conditions, its not a normal condition that is causing the problem". What is your definition of not driving in a normal condition? Anyone not driving a car in a normal condition should not be driving at all. They are danger to other drivers. Did anyone notice that when the car was shut off, the transmission kicked into NEUTRAL automatically? The overwhelming majority of accidents are caused by human error or neglect. Do your research.

@hr96ad
gotspeed1212 1 year ago
@hr96ad normal conditions as in the computer has not failed and is working correctly, an abnormal condition would be like it losing communication with the motor on the engine. think of your desk top computer, normally works just like it should but say your power supply goes bad and sends to much voltage to your cpu, your cpu over heats and dies, and the computer doesn't work like is should, and is unable to do any of its normal functions. thats what i ment by normal conditions.
gotspeed1212 1 year ago
There are lots of engineers doing there research, and they say that driving a car around the block a few times doesnt test anything. To really test Sikes car, they need to work at recreating the exact conditions that Sikes was driving in. Thats what they are referring to. He was in a mountainous area. Toyota tested the car on flat ground. Anybody driving under normal conditions should not be driving at all? You are a freakin genious.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
are you an idiot? POWER STEAERING IS A HELPLER YOU CAN STILL STEER EVEN IF THE ENGINE IS OFF
MillyStarr 1 year ago
is somebody saying you cant steer? It becomes very difficult to turn the wheel, and this may cause people to panic if they are not expecting it, just as they may panic when they step on the brake as usual and it doesnt do anything. The family that died by my house had a lexus with a pushbutton ignition, and they couldnt get it to shut off. Everything happened pretty fast too. The guy was a cop. I do believe they get some driver training.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
It should also be mentioned, when you go to such extremes, you just make the brand look weak, as it seems like you can't admit their faults. Every single vehicle I own is American, but I'm fully aware they arn't perfect. I can also admit that the Americans are NOWHERE near being solely responsible for automotive advancement. Hell, if you want to talk about "copying", the Americans "copied" the patent of a Swiss, and the alterations of a German. The automobile was copied from Karl Benz, a German,
RomeoReject23 1 year ago
you dimwit, there isnt a single person who could be called "soley responsible for the automobile". Did I say there was? I dont think so. Although the biggest player in the field of auto manufacturing was HENRY FORD, from the US!!! Did the americans copy a swiss patent??? Do you even know what a patent is?? And how they work??? Obviously not.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
The purpose of a patent is to spread the idea within the scientific community, so others can expand apon the idea (you call it copying), while giving the original inventor 12-18 years of market exclusivity. Anybody can "copy a patent", for that is the whole idea-to advance science through the free exchange of inventions. You just cant market the idea if it is still within someones period of exclusivity. If you do, the inventor can sue you for the royalties. Geez, some people are just clueless.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
Why should you do that?
90Daaaannnneeee 1 year ago
all your videos show is under normal conditions, its not a normal condition that is causing the problem, newer cars don't have a steel cable from the peddle to the engine its all controlled by a few computers, ever have a blue screen or your desktop just lock up on your home computer, what do you think happens when that occurs on one of the many computers in the car from taking a hard bump or freezing every night, and pushing the stop button doesn't respond like the gas peddle doesn't respond
gotspeed1212 1 year ago
exactly. Finally, a person who has a brain.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
@Jellolion1 im all for boycotting drive by wire....
gotspeed1212 1 year ago
I think the reason they do it is for designing in obsolescense. When your car gets old, it just gets way too expensive if not impossible to fix. Ever try getting a mother board for a 1990's apple computer? May as well toss them in the garbage. Exactly what they want. Also, it becomes impossible to fix them yourself, or at the local garage. You will have to bring your car to the dealer for virtually all maintainance, except changing the tires.

I'd bang that chick for being smart.

Jellolion1 1 year ago
There is no way that the prius couldn't be stopped with the brakes if you push all you've got. Not a chance.
Tjita1 1 year ago
for a car in working condition.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
Finally someone has been listening to the news! Yes even if you hold the gas full down AND the break full down THE BREAKS WILL OVER POWER THE GAS PEDAL AND THE CAR WILL STILL STOP thank you for knowing that
MillyStarr 1 year ago
actually NO.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
show me the proof. Show me a video of that lexus and get me the computer that will show the reve of the engine. DO YOU JUST LIKE TO HEAR YOURSELF TALK OR WHAT?
MillyStarr 1 year ago
Hey jellolion1 whats this about a Lexus? i thought we were talking about Toyotas!! OHH that explains A LOT.
MillyStarr 1 year ago
ohhh. listen to the expert now.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
"Hey, what is this Lexus shit???? I thought we were talking about Toyotas. You are so stupid. We are talking about toyotas and you go off talking about lexus. what an idiot. My daddy is a mechanic, and thats why I know so much about toyotas." -millhouse stark. Your posts are useful just as cheap commedy.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
Thats what a morron would do.How about just killing the motor and not locking the steering wheel?
justdriving 1 year ago
seriously though, I hard on the radio that toyota said the brakes showed signs of high temp damage, and extreme wear, exactly as you would expect. And they couldnt reproduce it, exactly as you would expect for an intermittant problem.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
Quality control testers set up automated systems to test components millions of times, under varying extreme conditons. For Toyota to come back the next day and say they couldnt reproduce the problem therefore he is lying really strikes a nerve for me. There is NO WAY Toyota could have done even the most routine quality control testing in such a short period of time, let alone find a problem that is known to be tricky to find. If they could reproduce it, then the problem would be solved.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
I hear a company that sounds like they are desperately trying to divert public attention away from the most obvious problem, which also happens to be the most expensive to fix, a quality control problem with their electronic design and/or engineering. Talk to any engineer and they will rattle off instantly a dozen possibilities that they would suspect, and they are all electronic isues , everything from power supply issues to rf interference, not drivers mixing up the gas pedal and the brake.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
benefit from a class action lawsuit??? The only people that benefit from class action lawsuits are the lawyers, dipshit. The people who sign on to a class action lawsuit get about 20 bucks each if they win the law suit. Class action lawsuits are an invention of law firms to make money for themselves.

If this happens to you, you probably deserve it for buying a POS jellybean on wheels. It might be a plan of Toyota to actually kill off all homos that purchas a prius:)
MXblaster105 1 year ago
yes and people don't realize they have to hold the gear shifter into N for 3 seconds for it to go into N because its spring loaded so idiots can't "bump" it and put the car in N now people are whining it wont go into N.... i guess you really can't fix stupid
MillyStarr 1 year ago 2
in other words, the shifter is electronic too, and that explains why some people have said the shifter doesnt respond, just like the accelerator and brakes. You can fix shoddy designs and shoddy engineering.
Jellolion1 1 year ago
No that just says people are STUPID! actually think about what you are saying the problem that this whole big recall is on is THE GAS PEDAL ELECTRONICS NOT THE SHIFTER ELECTRONICS
MillyStarr 1 year ago
Jellolion1 1 year ago
yeah, thats why all these people are dying. They are all just stupid, right? Wow, wonder why nobody other than you and Toyota could come up with that one. Do you think they mixed up the brake and the gas pedal too? Why does that only happen on Toyota's?
Jellolion1 1 year ago
