I first became aware of Richard Jordan when his mini-series "Captains and the Kings" was broadcast, back in the late 70's -- he carried the entire series, was the lone protagonist -- then saw him again in Les Mis when he played Jean Valjean - I always like him, appreciated his work, and looke forward to more from him -- I didn't realize Gettysburg was to be his swan song, but he made it count - God love ya, Richard -
i love how you used the gettysburg theme for this since it was his last film, he was a great actor and he did it so well done everytime i see a richard jordan movie i always applaude for so long cause he was literally one of the best actors that ever lived.
He was great in the Night Stalker movie. God bless you, Richard Jordan and to quote one of the characters from Gettysburg, the movie, "you did good, you did REAL good."RIP.
I hate to nitpick but,,,,,what happend to "RAISE THE TITANIC"? He was the lead after all...you have to admit he did not have that many staring roles....anyway...nice tribute
@Jaxar1 The director took the first cut to him so he could see that, so he actually saw more of it than the rest of us did, except without music and it was just a rough cut. Ron Maxwell said "he loved all of it."
this is great - i remember the first time i saw him act was in the tv series captains and the kings - the very first video i ever watched was raise the titanic - didnt even know he was in it - bonus
@bluegrassreb - When Logan's Run came out they had Jordan hit the talk show circuit, and he was so hysterical they kept wanting him to come back. A friend of mine still falls over laughing when he remembers what Jordan said about Michael York: "You'll never catch that guy picking his nose."
@deerhunter59ify - Glad you like them. On the subject at hand, I only know what I heard Pat Falci say two weeks ago. Since he claims he was the one trying to get Jordan to wear the skull cap, I'll believe him. In any event, I'm glad Jordan didn't go bald for the role. It was pretty terrific just the way it was.
Richard Jordan was great as Lewis Armistead in Gettysburg and the score of films he was in. I did not know he was in Hunt for Red October, The secret of my sucess, and others. Gettysburg was another landmark film of his Career. Rest in peace, Richard Jordan. Thanks.
@haynes1776 - Jordan was great fun in Red October and Secret of my Success - very unusual for someone one reviewer called "that good old reliable movie villain."
@ViccardXViccc Jordan knew what he was doing. He studied and researched his roles and he knew how to create a three-dimensional person out of lines on a script. IMHO, nobody can ever play Armistead again - Jordan owned the role and still does.
@ViccardXViccc When he played Jean Valjean in a film of Les Miserables, he read the book in the original French so as not to lose anything in translation.
@deerhunter59ify - according to Pat Falci, they wanted him to wear a skull cap, not shave. Good thing he refused, given the heat and how much trouble they had with the beards. I can picture him ripping that skullcap off and swearing longer and harder than the real Hancock would have.
May be of interest to some of the Jordan fans, but if you go to my user name, I have a video on there featuring many behind-the-scenes images of Jordan when he was in "Raise The Titanic" (1980)
I saw it. Interesting - especially since he apparently couldnt' get off screen without a cigarette. I heard he tried to stop in the early 80s - I don't know whether he succeeded or not.
yeah thats ok mate. The thing is I discovered his performance also in that movie very good and from then on as I grew up I began to notice him and everytime I wood look bak at Dune for him and Richard Jordon getting shot in the head by a Sardarkarr soldier and drying whilst in his shield. Poor bloke :( RIP RJ
I wish I had the information to do Richard Jordan's story justice. He seemed to be living his grandfather Learned Hand's advice - do what you like to do in your career and make sure you do it very well. Very few actors have been as consistently excellent as Jordan was. Even when the project wasn't that great, Jordan was. You could always count on getting your money's worth from him. Even if he could sometimes be a pain, he worked hard on doing well. That's remarkable and important.
He did a ton of movies in the 70s, but very little TV - Captains and the Kings was so long it just SEEMED like it was always on. He did a few episodes of The Equalizer in the 80s, several TV shows in the 60s. Mostly he did stage work - hundreds of plays v. about 30 films v. 20some TV shows.
Thank you for making such a wonderful tribute video. I've loved his work since first seeing him in CATK. Beautiful job, with the most beautiful music, very powerful. Was this piece from the Gettysburg soundtrack?? Thanks again.
He died in August 1993 after finishing "Gettysburg," which came out after he died. One of his best performances. Go to "Pickett's Charge Part 4" to see his last scene.
Piece of trivia - Sgt. William Jordan was in the 2nd Maine during the Civil War, was one of the soldiers who got sent to the 20th Maine, and was mortally wounded defending Little Round Top. Richard Jordan was his cousin.
I love that you did this-thank you. I have been in love with Richard Jordan since and think its a shame he did not win an academy award for his role as General Armistead.
Great actor. Also recall a very moving scene from Logans Run movie where he (as Francis 7) is reminiscing about his friendship/working with Logan 5 (played by Michael York) and then he dies in Logans arms after the two were fighting. The commentary on the DVD stated that in the burial scene afterwards, that Ustinov (as the old man) gave a moving prayer, but this was regrettably deleted at the time.
I did. Always felt sorry for his character - got a raw deal imo. That Banacek episode I saw on something called the Retro Channel that I don't get at home. I'd like to see that episode of Wide Country he did back in 62 again - haven't seen it since then. Called "Our Ernie Kills People." Guess who played Ernie?
When I first saw Richard Jordan in "Captain & the Kings" I fell in love with him. I do think of him every now, and than. He seemed like a really good soul. He left this world way to early.
Got your post just as I'm watching a rerun of Banacek, RJ playing a gigilo and wearing the worst flowered shirt I ever saw in my life. Ah, well, it was the 60s.
I've been to the Farnsworth lots of times, but never knew that. I will have to check it out! By the way I bought Captains and the Kings last night. I loved watching it and can't wait till it comes
Yes. A very hard role, emotionally and physically (that's not a double out there running around the open field in 100 degree weather wearing wool). He made it look easy.
I agree. I loved him as Armistead. I have been to Gettysburg many times and I always think of him in this role. I loved him in so many other things too. I really start to think of him as July nears. Thanks for this
Thank you for posting this. I admired Richard Jordan very much and I think about him everyday. It's good to know that others are thinking about him too.
I'll probably do another in the next few weeks, before "Captains and the Kings" comes out in January. The man was a wonderful actor. I still love watching his work.
Thanks for this
I loved him in Eddie Coyle and The Yakuza
