How come the camera shows almost exclusivey the violins and male choir members when clearly, the oboe and the soprano singers have the more prominent and leading parts?
Although I agree that without hard work Bach would never be who we know he was, I don't believe somebody without a gift would be able to be like him. This recording is very good. Although sometimes Mr. Harnoncourt sounds a little bit extravagant for my taste, I am agreat fan of his work, either with period or with modern orchestras. Moreover, his and Leonhardt's recording of the cantatas are the most listened to in my collection, despite some of them may be better with other conductors.
Bach.
Bach is my prophet, my love, my saviour. I shall not leave him from my heart and face. My heart's comfort and essence. Bach resists all suffering I shall not leave him from my heart and face.
Wonderful, amazing, just the right tempo, I think, with just a little of the dance in it, to convey the pleasure and joy of the lyrics. Thanks for uploading
Also?
His(Mr. Harnoncout) interpretation is so great! I have led a wave or playing the piano and conducting of piece, his way of playing a major impact on me.
This is truly wonderful, I love this piece. But... am I the only one who thinks it goes a bit too quick? I'd have preferred it, like, 10 bpm's slower. I guess it's force of habit though - the version I normally hear is slower.
@jakobv8 this might be the result of this piece being played so often during wedding ceremonies, slowly and reverently, in defiance of the more lively effect suggested by Bach in his original scoring.
@toyni2010 What does God have to do with it? It was all Bach's own, hard, work. He alone accomplished it, not God.
Inspiration does not exist. It is a myth, propagated by people who are not artists themselves. There exists only hard work, dedication, good taste, being taught by good teachers, copying from old masters and congenial colleagues, and having an intelligent brain.
@Timrath Yes, true, and all of that makes a good artist. But to be an exceptional artist like Bach, you need a certain spark. Bach definitely got something that many of his contemporary composers lacked or else, they would be just as well-known as him. Hard work, dedication, good taste and good teachers are very important. But they don't give you that spark.
(Talking as someone here who's writing. I know what I'm talking of. I've come across that spark.)
Reminds me of my happiest days in goa/india in 1996 at age 21, riding a yamaha bike 100cc form margao to vasco da gama without helmet or two wheeler licence listening to this fine tune over walkman and thinking life could go on like this forever, not knowing that life later on would never be again as good as it was then, the freedom, the adrenaline in my veins, the exotic location, the strange scents and the absence of law enforcement by narrow-minded policemen of the west
I can feel the nostalgia in reading your comment and listening to the music. I also listened to this song while trekking through the fields Asia, of southern China to be exact....in a time not too far away, when the world seemed to make much more sense than it does now...where people's behaviour was different than today.......
@maxkonal How very strange! If you liked Indian policing, then you really need to emerge into the real world. Bach would think that you're an idiot, and he'd be right.
@maxkonal My Heavens! Exactly what a friend and I did in Goa, but in 1973, rented a couple of motor bikes and rode from Margao to Vasco de Gama, also without helmets. We lived in a grass hut where the fishermen stored their nets.
You describe it so well and I know what you mean when you say (this) life could go on forever (like this). Yes. Well, our appreciation and love of Bach only increases and we have to wait for the World to catch up.
My goodness! What are the chances that music such as this should evoke memories of Goa in you too? Awesome!!
Except the time line in which I there was, in Utopian existence, precedes yours by some four decades! I don't remember Margao, but was born in Panjim (Panaji since the invasion in late 50's) and lived in Ponda.
The Goa of my childhood was pristine and beautiful!
The true reflection of a humanly conceived paradise!
And you are right, life was never to be the same again!
@maxkonal We have all been there. Before careers, families, bills and everyday life throws itself over You, life seemed simpler and in many ways happier. Don't get me wrong, I love my wife and daughters of course but I will forever look back at the days in my youth with a smile on my face.

And, to be made into a celeb, one must join, ordinarily. SPURN THE MUSE!!
If he spurns freemasonry, then he is my man, I misstook, and I apologize! It is those, who have not spurned freemasonry, who have served the foe. Ref: the doctrines of M.P. Hall, and of Gen. Pike. Can you show, to me, any documentation, of his disdain of freemasonry? P.S. thanks, to you, for your answer.
No, I can not show you some documents of his disdain of freemasonry. There must be a missunderstanding. I thought that you accused him because freemasonry could not trapp him. I myself have many reasons to spurn the freemasonry and I would be glad too if he would do so too. If he is connected to the devil it would be good for his muse. Thank you very much, My Master, for this wonderful, eternal and neverending Music. You are my light, mi God and my Leader. Before You, I only could hear the Music; after You, I just can hear the Perfection. In Bach we trust.
Johann Nicolaus Graf de la Fontaine und d'Harnoncourt-Unverzagt: Congratulations to your 80th birthday! You gave music back the place it deserves. Millions of people owe you a lot and without the spirit of poeple like you much of classical music would be sold out to the kitsch industry before it dies. Without your conducting and writing and without the musicians, who followed you I would not have been able to hear the greatness and magnificence of half of the music I now love.
I´m afraid you are not able to understand my sentence: "Thank you for hearing the Greatest in the world" means "Thank you for hearing Mr Bach not me". I´m only a little human mortal in this horrible world... At least, Bach makes this world a little more clean, wonderful and light. Thank you for posting, thank you for listening.
i'm sure someone out there still writes music like this - theyre just not famous. most modern composers have followed the style of minimalism, which, if you hear it, makes you wonder how anyone can call that music
This orphan has a point. Except about the minimalism. You know Bach wasn't known for composing in his time. People had to find that shit out afterwards. There may very well be another Bach among us, or a dead one yet (or never) to be discovered.
@SanctaPraeputia Some humans are inspired by God, we call them genius because they are able to listen to His voice. That is my opinion in front of such beauty.
@Cyberbob182 actually this his poppy shit. He dumbed it down for the church, he really wasn't all that religious but believe whatever makes you feel good.

This is quite a peculiar conversation to have appeared on the comment board for one of Bach's most compelling and beautiful pieces.

How can a human being write such incredibly beautiful music?
Bach bleibet meine Freude!

In that case you would be the world's greatest composer, which you are obviously not.

Para: SanctaPraeputia: No, madam. I´m afraid you are not able to understand my sentence: "Thank you for hearing the Greatest in the world" means "Thank you for hearing Mr Bach not me". I´m only a little human mortal in this horrible world... At least, Bach makes this world a little more clean, wonderful and light. Thank you for posting, thank you for listening.

knowledge of music theory and a bit of creativity and skill at the piano
orphan567 2 years ago
Well, if that's all it takes, I wonder why no one today can write such divine music.
SanctaPraeputia 2 years ago 5
i'm sure someone out there still writes music like this - theyre just not famous. most modern composers have followed the style of minimalism, which, if you hear it, makes you wonder how anyone can call that music
orphan567 2 years ago 3
This orphan has a point. Except about the minimalism. You know Bach wasn't known for composing in his time. People had to find that shit out afterwards. There may very well be another Bach among us, or a dead one yet (or never) to be discovered.

For SanctaPraeputia: Because Bach is not human but God. Thank you for hearing the Greatest in the world.
butannin 2 years ago 3
@SanctaPraeputia :) Cause a human like everything is a part of something larger, something that is the beauty itself, among other things :)
daseladi 1 year ago 3
@SanctaPraeputia Some humans are inspired by God, we call them genius because they are able to listen to His voice. That is my opinion in front of such beauty.

@Cyberbob182 actually this his poppy shit. He dumbed it down for the church, he really wasn't all that religious but believe whatever makes you feel good.

Jesús sigue siendo mi alegría
consuelo y bálsamo de mi corazón,
Jesús me defiende de toda pena,
Él es la fuerza de mi vida,
el gozo y el sol de mis ojos,
el tesoro y la delicia de mi alma;
por eso no quiero a Jesús
fuera de mi corazón y mi vista.

One of the best performances of this piece. The woman playing the violin at 1:03 is Alice Harnoncourt.

Jesus, alegria dos homens
A sabedoria santa, o mais brilhante amor
Desenhadas por Ele, nossas almas inspiradas
emanam a Luz incriada

Jesu, joy of man's desiring,
Holy wisdom, love most bright.
Drawn by Thee, our souls aspiring ,
Soar to uncreated light.
Word of God, our flesh that fashioned
With the fire of life impassioned,
Striving still to Truth unknown,
Soaring, dying 'round Thy throne.

Jesus, bleibet meine Freude,
Meines Herzens Trost und Saft,
Jesus wehret allem Leide,
Er ist meines Lebens Kraft,
Meiner Augen Lust und Sonne,
Meiner Seele Schatz und Wonne,
Darum la? ich Jesum nicht
Aus dem Herzen und Gesicht.
