I saw the comments that this was the censored version and I was going to pass it by, but I'm glad I didn't. As a kid, I thought that the instructor was talking gibberish, but hearing the lesson as an adult, the words "...allowing for the geocentric latitude of the target's position, as compared to that of the gunsight.." proves otherwise. Also, how many of us at one time or another in class found ourselves in Popeye's position :58 - 1:05 ? Only time I ever saw Popeye look at camera/audience/us.
There's an Iphone / iPod touch app out called "The Oldies". It features 24 cartoons including 12 Popeye cartoons. It turns your ipod into a dvd player. Absolutely hilarious. LOL! HAHAHA
This is so stupid, they cut out the part where the little Japanese captain pops out of the sub and says "So sorry!" after it fires the 3 torpedoes, and again after it dodges them. Fucking political correctness ruins a classic once again!

@looneytunes9000 Most of today's cartoons are weird and are nothing like this. Bugs Bunny and Tom and Jerry are great examples of cartoons that still amuses us today.
All Popeye wartime cartoons will apear remastered and un-cut, or so I've read. Which is a good thing. Those cartoons were obviously not PC but censoring them is almost like saying it racism didn't exist.
They're several others, "The Mighty Navy", "Kickn' the Conga 'Round", "Fleet's of Stren'th", "Olive Oyl and Water Don't Mix", "Baby Wants A Bottleship", "Your A Sap Mr. Jap", "A Hull of A Mess", "Scrap the Japs", "Too Weak To Work", "Happy Birthdaze" and "The Hungry Goat".
Many cartoons wasn't really colorized, like film colorized by computer. They just retraced the contours, using filmprojection over a drawing tables, getting the animation and background, and colored those traced areas by hand paint. So it's almost like remake a cartoon. Most B&W cartoons was almost pure black and pure white ink tones, so couldn't get much colors by computer coloring.
Well, when the b7W cartoon was made with several graytones, looking a normal contrast, it was colorized byu competer. The cartoons in B&W made with most very dark or very bright tones, was colorized by redrawing. The projected a print over a drawing table and drawing the countorns for the animation cell following the projected image.
Also, there was a scene omitted from the cartoon! When Popeye threw the torpedoes back at the sub, and it dodged them at first, a Japanese sailor would poke his head out and yell "So sorry!"
That's what made Popeye's final line in the cartoon so funny originally. :)
Hopefully, the new popeye DVD will have "Blunder Below" with the Japanese Sailor. This particular cartoon is one of my favorites, as it shows patriotism and comedy on a battleship, like "The Mighty Navy" and "Fleets of Stren'th"

This is historically inaccurate.
AllowExpression 2 years ago
It's a cartoon. Um, but I really did see a man pick up the keel of a ship once so a torpedo wouldn't hit it. No, really, thats totally accurate.

the colorized are also good.. but the B&W and color vids look the exactly the same. The drawings are the same. how would they do it?

I think this colorized version is Time compressed. The Popeye Tehme at the begninning is almost warp-speed
superleviathan 4 years ago
Your right. Many of the colorized ones shown on boomerang are sped up. Another "warp speed" one is "Baby wants a bottleship".
