  • Jones is GOD

  • the best country music ever. i too wish i knew what kind of bass Paycheck is playing.

  • @MrBlueroads I am sure it is a fender !

  • Who's the best. Jones or Haggard? After listening to this one, gotta say George. At least until I listen to Merle again. But George's voice is pure, Haggards has a little ragged edge. But man does George sing the daylights outta this one.

  • ♥ amazing..

  • isnt that a real young Johnny Paycheck singing harmony at 56 seconds in?

  • @jasonerling Yeah sure is. Wonder what kind of bass he plays right here

  • @jasonerling Yes it is.

  • Amazing how his voice has never changed after all these years..

  • @jayhackworth he is my favorite country singer too but if you love country you have to admit that Hank Sr. is the king. the first to get country into your everyday record store.

  • Oh hell yes. George Jones is the best.

  • Only George could wear a hot pink suit and get away with it. He's the man!

  • 10 stars wouldn't be enough...

  • i always thought Johnny paycheck sang a little like G J in his later recordiings . must have rubbed off on him I guess , as he is singing backup here.. and would later do an Album together in 1980 - Double Trouble.

  • what can I say, he's the best of the best.......

  • Thank God for Texas country!!

  • The voice, the flat-top crew cut and the sincere emotion; pure Country and pure America!

  • what would we do without george jones. I hope get to shake his hand one day and tell him that he is KING OF COUNTRY MUISIC. and he allways wil be.sorry i just cant listen to todays pop country its gone to HELL.

  • one of the great performances of all-time-

  • Hey, that's Johnny Paycheck on bass and harmony vox.

  • Helllo ...!

  • ive watched this video 25 times now in the last 2 weeks. I think it is my top three country songs ive heard or seen. His voice is amazing. i love that lock jaw he gets. thnks for posting.

  • love you George......this is what I remember about you..the hair and that beautiful pink suit. My husband had the same hair do. Love you too, Johnny...R.I.P.

  • Someone once asked Sinatra to name the best singer in the world, His response: "After me, George Jones"

  • @5thcorps Sinatra was wrong! Should be: After George Jones.. Me!

Got to see him in Asheville 2 years ago....still a GREAT show and a great voice!

  • This is the "REAL" stuff. No one does the music justice like George!!

  • paycheck singing harmony, im thinking pete drake on the steel

  • Man! thats nice video well done makeminecountry2.,

  • God that man can sing!

  • That's Johnny Paycheck playing bass and singing backup.

  • his facial expressions are priceless, he really seems like hes trying to maintain his composure over all these terrible things that are happening.

  • does anyone know where I can find a recording of this song? was it released? i saw there's a Louisiana Hayride live recording record but i don't think it's the same version. This version is the best, i need it desperately. Thanks!

  • i wonder where george is at these days...i hope he is havin a good life. im gonna be sooo depressed on the day that i find out that he passes away!! =[ he is my fav country singer and the music business wouldnt have been like it is today with out him!

  • This one of George's best songs ever. He makes you feel every hurt he is singing about. A great interpreter of Leon Payne's classic.

  • jones' voice is so gorgeous and hauntingly sad -

and then all that technicolor and stunning outfits to behold.

this post is a true treasure.

  • look at this young george,,its to cool, george is my fave, been listening to him all my life, i havent heard this on in a looooog time

  • I love REAL Country Music like this, but when I see this video it makes me sad, because I realize that GREATS like George Jones don't have much longer to grace us with this wonderful music. Paycheck is already gone, Jones will be 80 soon. We only have a few legends left, Ray Price, Charley Pride, Merle Haggard, Willie, Little Jimmy and just a few others. When those guys are all gone Country Music dies with them.

  • YELL HEAH!!!

  • Damm......... Johnny Paycheck singin' with George! :-)

  • Is it me or does Johnny look like Kevin Bacon here?

  • That guy playing the Rickenbacker cracks me up. George is the best ever and will never be equaled. If I had a time machine, you'd see me on the front row 'cause this is live, NOT lipsynched. Gives me goosebumps it's so good.

    Thanks for posting!

  • The bass player is none other than Johnny Paycheck . We sent a lot of people to Nashville from the Dayton Ohio area. Wayne Hobbs, on steel guitar. Dave Salyer playing lead, Frank Myers, song writer of several songs and lead guitar player, just so many. I played with them. Opened up for George years ago in Indiana. He and I were alone backstage and he looked at me smiled and start sing the Race Is On. awesome. The Adams brothers came from this area and played for Johnny and George.

  • Great singer and a terrific song of sorrow

  • They don't write 'em like that anymore. Country music doesn't get much better than George & The Jones Boys. A sad sluggin', tear jerker from the old "Possum". The real deal.....

  • this is an old gem. one of my favs

  • Me i'm 14 years old and a big fan of george jones to bad i missed him back in 2005 five when he came to my town but i didnt even know who he was back then but now i know who he is THE BEST COUNTRY SINGER IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Johnny Paycheck was also known as Donny Young back then.

  • Johnny Paycheck singin with ole George.....now THAT'S COUNTRY MUSIC!

  • That's George Jooooones!

  • Was that Eb from Green Acres eatin a samwich @ 0:11 ?

  • that's the great Del Reeves!

  • IS that Johnny Paycheck on Bass and harmony? I believe it is.

  • We love you George.

  • I remember back in 1974 my dad took me to see George Jones in wheeling west virginia, I was so thrilled as a 10 year old to see him sing and who I believe to be the best country singer of all time. Now at 44 years old I still never grow tired of hearing the possum sing. Thanks for all the memories Mr George Jones

  • You were one of the lucky ones. I lived in WV near Wheeling during the early 70's and on one occasion, Tammy had to do the show by herself. Years later, as an entertainer myself, I had the honor of opening for George. I love this man so much.

  • Look how far Jones is from the microphone... goes to show you how powerful his voice is! He can really blast out a tune. What an awesome talent. In my opinion when we lose George Jones, a HUGE part of REAL Country music dies with him. I hope he sticks around for a while!

  • so nice

  • I love this so much. Thank you for posting it.

  • nashville you say? This is straight HARD CORE Texas music! And we are STILL proud of it!

  • yes and written by master texas songwriter leon payne, the best country music at the moment is texas country music and thanks to justin trevino and folks like him for keeping country music like it should be with twin fiddles and loud crying steel guitars.

  • @makeminecountry2 Panola County, Texas

  • @makeminecountry2 I totally agree and thanks for your help in keeping it country!

  • Lord knows we need TX again. All the talent ... it's just missing now ...

  • there are some real good people in Texas today making country music.yes,

i can count them on more then just my fingers.George Jones is still one of the best.

  • @dgtxdutch yup Beaumont Texas my dad painted Georges fence when he was a kid on summer break. It was so long goin around the ranch by time he'd gotten around the thing it was time to whitewash it again. Grandad was a friend of george's and thought it keep his step son out of trouble. Sorry i never got to know grandma as an adult she died at 53. Some said it was smoking that caused the cancer someone else blamed the bacon fat. Mabey it was a broken hear. t 53 is too young to die of old age

  • And the bass player is none other than Johnny Paycheck.

  • George Jones is the heart and soul of any music. Nobody will ever fill his shoes!!!!!!!!

  • Wow...i never saw young George before. I'm used to all the hair and the glasses.

  • @stonemnky well get a haircut and some contact lenes and you'll be fine

  • Ha ha...that's clever...I'll do that.

  • thanks for the upload. great video and song.

  • @makeminecountry2

hahahahaha good call. that was a good'un :)

  • @makeminecountry2 That's funny! Really good comment. 10 points! :- )

  • besause the radio thinks we do not what to hear the legends anymore. thank GOD for the inter net we can hear what we love.

  • I also wanted to comment on the power of Jones voice- look how far he is from that Microphone! Not to many folks have ever been able to belt a tune like that and make it come out as smooth and perfect as the ol' Possum!

  • Great tune by george.

  • can anyone recommend a good old johnny paycheck album? thanks

  • Right up there with "There's No Justice" and "Where Grass Won't Grow" as the best record from his Musicor period. God bless George Jones! He remains country music's absolute master.

  • Oh how I love this song good ole country music nothing better thanl you I enjoyed very much Ilove george

  • I bow to our lord and saviour George Jones, and shall do so until they pry his album and whiskey bottle from my cold, dead hands.

  • Two of the biggest hellraisers ever. But boy they could put across a song.

  • Sometimes I wish you could give more than five stars.

  • @dragknuckle Yup. You said it.

  • y can't country music be like this anymore!! now we have people like keith urban, rascall flatts and big & rich ruining country music. George Jones is amazing!! I listen to George Jones, Hank Williams Sr, Lefty Frizzell, Merle Haggard, Randy Travis, George Strait Alan Jackson and a lot more. and i'm only 15 years old!!

  • You're only 15? You have very good taste my young friend. with people like you, this kind of country will never die!!!

  • A small secret on Johnny Paycheck.......In the studio he prefered playing his sears silvertone twin p/u guitar.

  • Who is the second guitar? Looks familiar.. great video by the way.. Andy Grifith show?

  • You should check out his playing on Love Bug!!

  • Johnny Paycheck.

  • this is so awesome

  • very handsome and sexy , btw , extraordinary singer , yumm :P

  • "That's George Jones!" LOL

Great song and so well performed. Not sure about that suit though George, it's a bit of a fashion faux pas! Thanks for posting this vintage bit of U.S. quality!

  • A very early Donny Young or i should say Johnny Paycheck!! Wow anybody that loves country music what a treat!!!

  • and a little pay check to .

  • Anyone know where this video came from? Looks like "Love Bug" is from the same footage- I'd love to see this in its entirety! Fan-freakin'-tastic. Thanks for the post!

  • New Country Music is a joke, this is the real Country music, and in a 100 years they will still be listening to this over the crap of the 90's and 2000's, Lord knows what stuff we have to look forward to after that.

  • This is down right nice !

  • That's George Jones!

  • My God! this is so beautifull!! And this music gets better by the day!

  • I love George, greatest singer to ever live, but he sounds like he had a few to drink in this version of this song. listen in the beginning, sounds like he slurred 'kitchen' to me. and I have a different recording of this song and it sounds a little different.. but I guess its no secret he did a lot of shows a little intoxicated..

  • Your rite. But i think living the life made his songs have more impact. Hes the Man...

  • this is a treasure I just discovered and I thought that was Johnny but wasn't sure till I read yall's comments. This song lets George have a hay day with his voice.

  • it doesnt get any better than this love u george

  • Thanks for sharing.....What a singer,What a Song.

Johnny Paycheck might have been a heck raiser,

but he was very talented also... I like it when he sings with Jones And Price.

    Chorus

    D, A, E7

    D, A, D

    A, E7, A
