Who's the best. Jones or Haggard? After listening to this one, gotta say George. At least until I listen to Merle again. But George's voice is pure, Haggards has a little ragged edge. But man does George sing the daylights outta this one.
@jayhackworth he is my favorite country singer too but if you love country you have to admit that Hank Sr. is the king. the first to get country into your everyday record store.
i always thought Johnny paycheck sang a little like G J in his later recordiings . must have rubbed off on him I guess , as he is singing backup here.. and would later do an Album together in 1980 - Double Trouble.
what would we do without george jones. I hope get to shake his hand one day and tell him that he is KING OF COUNTRY MUISIC. and he allways wil be.sorry i just cant listen to todays pop country its gone to HELL.
ive watched this video 25 times now in the last 2 weeks. I think it is my top three country songs ive heard or seen. His voice is amazing. i love that lock jaw he gets. thnks for posting.
love you George......this is what I remember about you..the hair and that beautiful pink suit. My husband had the same hair do. Love you too, Johnny...R.I.P.
does anyone know where I can find a recording of this song? was it released? i saw there's a Louisiana Hayride live recording record but i don't think it's the same version. This version is the best, i need it desperately. Thanks!
i wonder where george is at these days...i hope he is havin a good life. im gonna be sooo depressed on the day that i find out that he passes away!! =[ he is my fav country singer and the music business wouldnt have been like it is today with out him!
I love REAL Country Music like this, but when I see this video it makes me sad, because I realize that GREATS like George Jones don't have much longer to grace us with this wonderful music. Paycheck is already gone, Jones will be 80 soon. We only have a few legends left, Ray Price, Charley Pride, Merle Haggard, Willie, Little Jimmy and just a few others. When those guys are all gone Country Music dies with them.
That guy playing the Rickenbacker cracks me up. George is the best ever and will never be equaled. If I had a time machine, you'd see me on the front row 'cause this is live, NOT lipsynched. Gives me goosebumps it's so good.
The bass player is none other than Johnny Paycheck . We sent a lot of people to Nashville from the Dayton Ohio area. Wayne Hobbs, on steel guitar. Dave Salyer playing lead, Frank Myers, song writer of several songs and lead guitar player, just so many. I played with them. Opened up for George years ago in Indiana. He and I were alone backstage and he looked at me smiled and start sing the Race Is On. awesome. The Adams brothers came from this area and played for Johnny and George.
They don't write 'em like that anymore. Country music doesn't get much better than George & The Jones Boys. A sad sluggin', tear jerker from the old "Possum". The real deal.....
Me i'm 14 years old and a big fan of george jones to bad i missed him back in 2005 five when he came to my town but i didnt even know who he was back then but now i know who he is THE BEST COUNTRY SINGER IN THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember back in 1974 my dad took me to see George Jones in wheeling west virginia, I was so thrilled as a 10 year old to see him sing and who I believe to be the best country singer of all time. Now at 44 years old I still never grow tired of hearing the possum sing. Thanks for all the memories Mr George Jones
You were one of the lucky ones. I lived in WV near Wheeling during the early 70's and on one occasion, Tammy had to do the show by herself. Years later, as an entertainer myself, I had the honor of opening for George. I love this man so much.
Look how far Jones is from the microphone... goes to show you how powerful his voice is! He can really blast out a tune. What an awesome talent. In my opinion when we lose George Jones, a HUGE part of REAL Country music dies with him. I hope he sticks around for a while!
yes and written by master texas songwriter leon payne, the best country music at the moment is texas country music and thanks to justin trevino and folks like him for keeping country music like it should be with twin fiddles and loud crying steel guitars.
@dgtxdutch yup Beaumont Texas my dad painted Georges fence when he was a kid on summer break. It was so long goin around the ranch by time he'd gotten around the thing it was time to whitewash it again. Grandad was a friend of george's and thought it keep his step son out of trouble. Sorry i never got to know grandma as an adult she died at 53. Some said it was smoking that caused the cancer someone else blamed the bacon fat. Mabey it was a broken hear. t 53 is too young to die of old age
I also wanted to comment on the power of Jones voice- look how far he is from that Microphone! Not to many folks have ever been able to belt a tune like that and make it come out as smooth and perfect as the ol' Possum!
Right up there with "There's No Justice" and "Where Grass Won't Grow" as the best record from his Musicor period. God bless George Jones! He remains country music's absolute master.
y can't country music be like this anymore!! now we have people like keith urban, rascall flatts and big & rich ruining country music. George Jones is amazing!! I listen to George Jones, Hank Williams Sr, Lefty Frizzell, Merle Haggard, Randy Travis, George Strait Alan Jackson and a lot more. and i'm only 15 years old!!
Great song and so well performed. Not sure about that suit though George, it's a bit of a fashion faux pas! Thanks for posting this vintage bit of U.S. quality!
Anyone know where this video came from? Looks like "Love Bug" is from the same footage- I'd love to see this in its entirety! Fan-freakin'-tastic. Thanks for the post!
