This battle and Indonesia's independence struggle is completely unheard of in the west. We like to think we were the good guys rescuing Asia from the bad Japanese... ha, The Japanese governor of Surabaya was ordered to hand over his troop's weapons to the Dutch & British. he gave them to the people of Surabaya instead.
Is Indonesia all those islands? Or is it just Javanese that won independence? What about Irian and Aceh and other parts of Indonesia? Are they controlled from Jakarta by wealthy Indonesian Chinese? Would life have been better for the majority of Indonesians with Japanese or Dutch in charge, rather than the current system?
@starpip1 At least all of Indonesians have same rights and duties before law (not like in colonial period). In spite of development still not spread evenly in all regions. Indonesia decentralized authority to all provinces and some special provinces. The gov't still has to improve law enforcement and supervision.

My great grand parents were one of the member of Chinese group that fund the rebel to fight against Japanese and Dutch, but their name were later scrapped when Suharto comes into power as they were trying to erase any track of Chinese contribution in Indonesia.

Only Java and Sumatra, The rest of the islands came under direct control of Java, except New Guinea, which in 1963 was owned by Java. According to the negotiations, these areas should have their own government, which the Netherlands had agreed with Moluccans, but Sukarno madea nation of it and the people lost their self-government. It's only the Java nationalist and parts of Sumatra who won the independence, the rest is conquered bij Java, by politics or by military intervention.
@starpip1 Chinese indonesians do not have the same rights as the native indonesians,basically they conduct alot of under the table dealings to get particular things they want,business deals,kick-backs ect...Suharto 15 years ago stripped all the chinese indos of everything and there was an uprising by the natives around 1999 in which around a 100 chinese indo's were killed.

First of all, the British were only in Indonesia to arrest and deport the Japanese, and rescue their prisoners of war. Secondly, When Mallaby drove out of his headquarters to confront the huge mob, he was carrying a white flag and he appealed for calm and promised to leave once the Allies had done their job. He was then shot twice in the chest and murdered.

battle of surabaya 11/10/1945 was a trigger for national resistance against NICA and friends in all over indonesia...for almost 5 years indonesian had fought in "revolusi fisik", hundred of thousands people perished (or may be a million ?), infra structure destroyed,millions lost their property etc...shit was pretty fucked up back then..so after all of those fuckin' sacrifice that our fore fathers done...is it worth it being indonesian ? i mean with chronic corruption nowadays..

My argument all along has been with British motivations which were hugely varied and disputed vigorously among themselves (and with the Dutch) at the time ie Sept 1945 onwards, in the armies, the command ie Supreme Commander South East Asia, Mountbatten, and within the British Government.
Yes, we lost this battle, but it was what is called in military term as "glorious defeat". By killing 2 British generals and showing fierce resistance and unwillingness to surrender, we gained political supports from many other countries and thus bargaining power in the talks and negotiations that came afterward. That was the significance of this lost battle, in that it helped us won the war for upholding our independence. Happy Heroes Day!

One of the most celebrated defeats in British history is that of Boudicca in AD60 when she led a rebellion to get the Romans out of Britain by burning down London and Camulodunum, the capital of Roman Britain - gettit? All the way to the top. Read Van der Post.One of the main purposes of the British was to release the Dutch & other European internees, mostly civilian & mostly women & children. When many of them were murdered as the British were trying to rescue them they turned their attention to the "militias" - who had another agenda.

No Generals died in this battle. There was no such thing as a Brigadier-General at that time. That title was abolished in the British Army in 1922. They were Brigadiers - ref 3:20 Brigadier Mallaby & 3:23 Brigadier Loder-Symonds. Loder-Symonds died in an aircraft accident & not in battle.
The historical context of this battle is far more important than which individuals died. What was going on beforehand and why the British forces were in Indonesia in the first place.
General Mallaby died a few days before the battle took place. His car was burned due to handgrenade explotion thrown by Indonesian militias..
General Loder died when his aircraft shot by Indonesian militia's ex Japanese anti aircraft canon during the battle. He was monitoring the battle from the air when his aircraft was shot.

Indonesian people has no need to argue with the American or anybody, since Indonesian people had their own proof. Indonesia had successfully build a huge Buddhist temple while in the same time, American only had some naked Indians wandering around. Indonesian build their own culture, while Americans we know today is only Brits colony. They're only some piece of useless and unwanted people thrown out from England and landed somewhere. @starpip1 At least all of Indonesians have same rights and duties before law (not like in colonial period). In spite of development still not spread evenly in all regions. Indonesia decentralized authority to all provinces and some special provinces. The gov't still has to improve law enforcement and supervision.

My great grand parents were one of the member of Chinese group that fund the rebel to fight against Japanese and Dutch, but their name were later scrapped when Suharto comes into power as they were trying to erase any track of Chinese contribution in Indonesia.

First of all, the British were only in Indonesia to arrest and deport the Japanese, and rescue their prisoners of war. Secondly, When Mallaby drove out of his headquarters to confront the huge mob, he was carrying a white flag and he appealed for calm and promised to leave once the Allies had done their job. He was then shot twice in the chest and murdered.

battle of surabaya 11/10/1945 was a trigger for national resistance against NICA and friends in all over indonesia...for almost 5 years indonesian had fought in "revolusi fisik", hundred of thousands people perished (or may be a million ?), infra structure destroyed,millions lost their property etc...shit was pretty fucked up back then..so after all of those fuckin' sacrifice that our fore fathers done...is it worth it being indonesian ? i mean with chronic corruption nowadays..

My argument all along has been with British motivations which were hugely varied and disputed vigorously among themselves (and with the Dutch) at the time ie Sept 1945 onwards, in the armies, the command ie Supreme Commander South East Asia, Mountbatten, and within the British Government.

Yes, we lost this battle, but it was what is called in military term as "glorious defeat". By killing 2 British generals and showing fierce resistance and unwillingness to surrender, we gained political supports from many other countries and thus bargaining power in the talks and negotiations that came afterward. That was the significance of this lost battle, in that it helped us won the war for upholding our independence. Happy Heroes Day!

One of the most celebrated defeats in British history is that of Boudicca in AD60 when she led a rebellion to get the Romans out of Britain by burning down London and Camulodunum, the capital of Roman Britain - gettit? @lunarouge99 What you need to realise is that there was fierce disagreement among the British & other Anglo people involved as to whether to support the Dutch returning or not. All the way to the top. Read Van der Post.One of the main purposes of the British was to release the Dutch & other European internees, mostly civilian & mostly women & children. When many of them were murdered as the British were trying to rescue them they turned their attention to the "militias" - who had another agenda.

In that case, politically, the British Empire had set agreement with the Dutch to however crush down the Indonesian Independence Movement, because it can be destabilize the region. As an Indonesian, I have to admit that we did not won the battle of Surabaya, but we did make the British realized that we were willing to sacrifice anything for our Independence, and the world opinion dramatically changed then. Don`t you know that this battle also made Australian supported Indonesian Independence? And finally most of the world support our fight for independence, although none sent us weapon. The most important we became independent finally...that`s all.

No Generals died in this battle. There was no such thing as a Brigadier-General at that time. That title was abolished in the British Army in 1922. They were Brigadiers - ref 3:20 Brigadier Mallaby & 3:23 Brigadier Loder-Symonds. Loder-Symonds died in an aircraft accident & not in battle.
The historical context of this battle is far more important than which individuals died. What was going on beforehand and why the British forces were in Indonesia in the first place.

General Mallaby died a few days before the battle took place. His car was burned due to handgrenade explotion thrown by Indonesian militias..
General Loder died when his aircraft shot by Indonesian militia's ex Japanese anti aircraft canon during the battle. He was monitoring the battle from the air when his aircraft was shot.

Of the 12 Mosquitoes employed nearly all were hit by small arms fire.One Mosquito crashed while taking off from the Surabaya airfield with Brigadier Loder- Symonds.. who was going up to observe artillery fire..The brigadier and the pilot were killed. This crash was not due to Indon.. action and Surabaya radio last night hailed it as showing that " God is on our side."

Yes, Brigadier Mallaby (not General) was killed at short range by Indonesian "militia". Not controversial. It was reported in The Times (UK) on 1.11.45 & in Sydney Morning Herald on 2.11.45.
No delay there in reporting it.
