I learned recently that Van Gough originally shut himself out from the world and painted amny... "dark" pictures"...
only when once he was lying on a bed in the hospital room(0:42), then a nurse offered to open the window for him. (first time someone showed kindness to him - i THINK) then he saw the beauty of the outside world, he saw the beautiful flowers (0:07), the big wide and open meadow (0:13) and started painting beautiful pictures.
The last of the Van gogh line was murdered in holland by a muslim fundamentalist not so long ago, what a nice world we live in..Theo van gogh, the grandson of vincents brother-rip Vincent and Theo
There has been talk about possibly digging Van Gogh up and trying to see if they can determine what type of metal disorder he had. There have been lots of opinions, from a form of VD, to poison from the paint.
Do you have a source for this information, please?
Van Gogh did ingest paints, chalks and other tools of artistry; it's likely he had some lead poisoning. However, his excessive consumption of absinthe, which also affected his perception of yellow-green colors, is probably far more to blame for his hallucinatory behavior (i.e. lopping off his ear lobe).
It's a known fact that a lesion on his brain from childhood caused temporal lobe epilepsy. Eyewitness accounts, Van Gogh's own writings, the fugue states that preceded the grand mal seizures all point to the major brain dysfunction as TLE.
Van Gogh also had bipolar disorder, a disease not uncommon among artists or his own family.
I am curious as to why anyone would spend the time and money to disinter an almost 118-year old corpse to prove what is already known and what does not really matter at this juncture anyway.
There are no known facts with regard to Van Gogh's health. There have been many theories as to his mental disorders. In addition to the theories you've laid out some suspect he had Hypergraphia, syphilis, absinthe poison, etc.
BTW: Additional possibilities experts have put forward are acute intermittent porphyria, temporal lobe epilepsy, schizophrenia, xanthopsia. Again, experts have spent a lot of time tryin to guess what Van Gogh suffered from.
I just love it! Vincent was a great artist. He suffered a lot because he didd´t belong to this world. He was a poor depressed man, but a genious! Only depressed people can understand this video...it "says"so much! Thank you for this tribute.
I agree with everything you say except 'Only depressed people can understand this video'! Don't be silly, a beautiful song and that beautiful art speaks to everyone, although some people will refuse to listen.
I have suffered with depression and have had a loved one to commit suicide from severe depression...This song is such a Beautiful song written for this artist who also suffered for his sanity....And what a great artist he was!!!!! thanks for the video ss....
as an ingnorant 21 year old my girl friend dragged me to see a Vincent exhibition in London, boring paintings i thought on my way. But whne i saw them i was inspired, his vivid, energetic paintings captured that christic force that brings life to every thing, that is with in everything from man to stone. The song is a beautiful ode to a man that Don greatly admires, loves, respects etc. a lovely song to a wonderful artist.
My Dad suffered from depression for years and years, and used to occasionally say "Starry starry night." Just like McLean, now I understand what he was trying to tell me. I wonder if Dad knew just how meaningful those words would become to the family who are left. We miss you so much, Dad. Please be at peace.
Nelle, your dad obviously knew of Van Gogh's painting because that is precisely what depression is like. As a psychiatric nurse, I've dealt with a lot of depressed patients and we have many many ways to treat the disorder. I am sorry your father passed before he could know peace in his soul on this earth, but I am certain he knows peace now. And I like to envision him meeting Vincent Van Gogh, shaking his hand and sitting down for a long talk. They surely have a lot to share.
Vincents career was the shortest but most intense in the History of art.He died by his own hand at 37 years of age, only four years after he discovered his style and eight years after he began painting.A great human being in the other hand.R.I.P
i spent most of my life listening to Vincent and McLeans others. I put two and two together recently when my 10 year old daughter studied Van Gough and is a very good painter. after doing research i listened to the song for the 1,000th time and it came to me. " thats the Vincet he sings about". It's as beautiful as Tery Jacks " Season in the Sun". another song that is sang from the heart.
You know, I'm shocked at how many people don't know that "Vincent" refers to Van Gogh until they either learn it from their kids or here at You Tube. Of course, it makes me wonder what I'VE missed, like what the heck is "Innagoddavida" about? Or Paul Simon's "Mother and Child Reunion", what's up with that?
Anybody? Anybody know?
See? Nobody knows. I'm glad you enjoy the music, I do as well.
innagoddavida, as i learned, was always supposed in be IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN but when sung either drunk or high became what we know now.. not nearly as inspiring :)
i have recently read about Van Goughs life and am amazed he was a tortured genius and this song is fitting beautiful words and beautiful imagery starry night alone inspire me to write i honestly recomend anyone to read about Van Goughs life it was something else

PART TWO: The word count is limited so I'm on part 2.

It is at net slash and then the little squiggle that is next to the number on your keyboard (use capitalization to get it, it's this: "~") and then palacepuppy (all one word) then a slash and then id17 period h t m l. (NO SPACES, damn this software) (it booted the four letters so I spaced 'em)
Don wrote 'Crossroads' in 1971. It's on several of his compilation albums. If you'd like I can send you the mp3 when I get back home from my trip and get back on my main computer.
YES! I WANT IT! I also want to understand the story about Crossroads, the "selling of the soul" that....Robert somebody?....did and all of that. I knew he wrote it, but it still feels odd. It's so Eric Clapton.
I just got Pink Floyd doing "Comfortably Numb" with Nine Inch Nails and David Bowie. What a combination but I love it. Nobody else can tolerate it. But it's not the MUSIC, not on this version, that I love. This version tells the story.
I watched this show thats in chinese and this song was discribed in it when a guy whose father sang this song to him when he was small and and when he died his girlfriend played this song on the Saxaphone
I agree that his drawings were significant and often amazing, but as you can see I'm going for the YouTube demographic. I have had more messages and mail telling me that people did not know who "Vincent" was in McLean's song or that they had never even heard the song (God I'm old) so I'm glad it captures a broader group. I noted a couple on your saved favorites that I want to mention, please check your messages. And thanks for watching my first and probably lame attempt at a slide show.
It most certainly isn't a lame slide show. His headstone at the end is a really touching way to finish the song. excellent work! I beleive Van Gogh is buried in France even though he is Dutch...
Those potential meaningful song writers have gone to watching youtubes, facebooks, playing Wii, video games instead...today we just can't enjoy and see starry nights no more. Extremely bad pollution smog around us. Let's save our planet, bring back the good old earth as seen in Vincent's eyes then.
And when no hope was left in sight on that starry starry night, you took your life as lovers often do. so true! i love this song. And i could watch the video for hours, Van Goghs work just sucks you right in! totally agree with the comment about capturing movement!! Bxx

I am trying to get in touch with you. Would you please message me via YouTube's message system? I wrote to you but fear it did not get through. Thank you.
He shot himself in the chest and died three days later. It was ruled a suicide. Though he was not mentally ill, he had temporal lobe epilepsy with "auras" that preceded the seizures and he believed himself to be insane. The terror drove him to end his life.
I never realized that Don McClean were refering to Vincent Van Go's Starry Nights till now. Vincent, Starry Night. Duh? Beautiful. I'm an artist too.....
"Bad appropriation"? What does that even mean? You think she stole the paintings and photographed them at home? Maybe they were in her parents' attic. Or maybe she found them off the internet like everyone else does, huh?
the reason he never sold anything was he wasnt much of a salesmen. alot of good artist are never known because of that. in his case it was his life postumously.
What a beautifully sad tribute to one of the greatest artists of all time. I love your paintings Vincent. RIP Vincent van Gogh.

how did he die ?
Aliddy 5 years ago
He shot himself in the chest and died three days later. It was ruled a suicide. Though he was not mentally ill, he had temporal lobe epilepsy with "auras" that preceded the seizures and he believed himself to be insane. The terror drove him to end his life.

Van Gogh and certain painters capture movement even when others don't notice any. Very flowing
