  • There is no better Figaro than Terfel since Sir Geraint Llewellyn Evans. Actually, the voices are remarkably similar in their suited musical fach. They went to the same music school as far as I am aware? How I long to ear more Mozart & Falstaff. Oh - some Schubert lieder... able to weave entire worlds of emotion trough its intimate musical interaction. Just unparalleled...

Sing Mozart and teach an entire new generation of singers trough is magnificent example...

  • Mozart che descrive i sentimenti popolari della rivoluzione: fantastico! :)

  • this guy is great! :D

  • Wow, his grace notes on the refrain at the end were something I'd never heard before. Me gustò!

  • @1066anglophile im glad you pointed that out because its such a great little touch he added

  • Of course Figaro is plebeian. According to "The Ascent of Man" series by Jacob Bronowski (who is the reason Britain does NOT do Polack jokes), the story behind the opera was revolutionary! It presented the idea that the life and love of a mere commoner is as worthy of our attention as that of a Count or any other aristocrat.

  • I love Bryn, his trade mark is being an incredible singer while singing out of the side of his mouth and going sharp on the last F. I'm sure every time he hears this recording thats all he thinks about is that last F, because he actually sings an F#

  • A thin Bryn - who would have guessed it. Lovely voice, superb actor.

  • 4 justin bieber fans i guess....

  • Este hombre es como el buen vino; siempre tuvo buena voz, pero ha mejorado con el tiempo!

  • love it!

  • Definitely the best Figaro around. He is not only one of the best baritones in the world, but also one of the best actors! Bravi, bravi!!

  • @1walkuere Finally one more person, that recognizes him as a baritone, because he is not a bass-baritone (as he consideres himself).

  • @BassoNero

    he is a low bartione

  • i hopelessly love this aria.)

  • Bravo, Bryn! A very likeable Figaro!

  • i hav to sing this and non piu andrai and im only 17. its hard lol

  • @amfm829 It is better to sing art song well, than opera bad.

  • @amfm829 If you can reach it, you're good, I'm 19, my voice is somewhat between a young bass and a bass baritone (let's say Leporello fits me like a glove, and I can manage Cinque, dieci, venti very decently) and Non più andrai is absolutely out of reach for me.

  • The best Figaro we may see in our lifetime. Bravo Terfel!

  • Wonderful! Although the Spanish subtitles were a bit peculiar, even if I do have a bit more Spanish than Italian.

  • G-d that was beautiful. He can sing to me anytime.

  • he is sooo great XD

  • What a fabulous voice and delivery; as an amateur baritone I am mesmerized by his performance.

    Bravo!

  • I love Bryn Terfel. It's so funny he does an elvis type lip sometimes =) IT only makes me love him more!

  • I'll alwsys remember this aria as the tune Winthorpe whitsles as he leaves his office before kissing Penelope Witherspoon's picture in Trading Places

  • haha yeh i saw that

  • 5 stars but his last high F was a bit sharp.

  • Beautiful! I luv Mozart and Terfel!!!

  • what a superb voice tyrfel's,excellent bass- bariton ,long live mozart

  • This is my father's favorite aria.

  • O M G!!!!!!!! And he's HOT too!!!!!

  • how do i get a recording of this?? !! I have a tape version off tv but really want a better quality version

  • Bryn Terfel's performance is flawless. I like this a great deal. Can anybody help me with how I can get either a cd or a dvd of this performance at the met. I have looked high and low and cant find anything. Please can somebody help, with such an amazing top class cast there must be a copy out there...I hope somebody can point me in the right direction. Thank you!

  • It just doesn't get any better than this! Everything Bryn touches to gold... ADORE the man!

  • I cant't find the english translation of this aria anywhere. Can someone tell me the jist of it?

  • This is the translation printed in Kurt Adler's Operatic Anthology vol V (bass). The translation is by a Ruth and Thomas Martin. The seemingly odd way I change between lines is meant to make it easier to follow the melody.

Since there is a 500 character limit on comments the translation follows in two parts:

  • Should my dear master want some diversion,

should my dear master want some diversion,

I'll play the music on my guitar,

I'll play the music on my guitar, yes,

    on my guitar, yes,

    on my guitar.

  • Thanks very much.

  • Should he for instance, wish to go dancing, he'll face the music, I'll lead the band should he for instance, wish to go dancing, he'll face the music, I'll lead the band I'll lead the band, yes, just let him say so, I'll lead the band.
  • And then I'll take my cue without ado and slyly very, very, very, very, very slyly, using discretion, I shall uncover his secret plan. Subtly outwitting, innocent seeming, cleverly hitting, planning and scheming, I'll get the best of the hypocrite yet, I'll beat him yet!
  • Subtly outwitting, innocent seeming,

    cleverly hitting, planning and scheming,

teach him a lesson he'll never forget,

teach him a lesson he'll never forget,

teach him a lesson he'll never forget.

This time I shall upset his plan.

    [repeat first part]

Youtube counts to 500 in a different method than I do!

  • btw that is the artistic version the literal translation is somewhat different, but with the same basic idea.

  • That's not bad at all, I like it

  • I've seen Terfel in Figaro 3 days ago at the Met. He was stunning! This production was the most extraordinary thing I've ever experienced at the opera - and I'm not a fan of Nozze that I usually find too long.

  • Terfel has one of the best and most resonant instruments I have ever heard. To judge him based on a single genre/performance is naive. Many critics despised Pavarotti for the unique timbre of his voice. Terfel is definitely one of greatest current singers.

  • I always find it interesting when someone "knowledgeable" challenges why we think someone is a great singer, as though they "know" better. Antillas636 must think that the millions of people who have flocked to Terfel performances over the last decade (and purchased his CDs) are idiots. Even when I don't like a particular singer's sound or performance, I can definitely find it within my capabiliities to understand why people like that singer. Is that so hard?

  • Amen.

I find it interesting and somewhat pathetic. My favourite line is "This guy's so bad! I do it much better!"

  • All Antilla said was her own opinion. No need to insult other peole here. And how do you know that you are then "knowledgeable" about the issue? Things like this are subjective. Notice how she didn't criticize his singing, but the overall presentation - one is allowed to have perosnal opinion about such things.

  • I would like to clear things up;

    1) I never said that I could sing much better than Terfel.

    2) I never called anyone an idiot for buying his CDs.

3)Of course I am being subjective, IT IS MY OPINION!!! Noone can be objective when giving his or her own opinion.

4)Yes, it is very hard for my to understand why many people like Terfel. However I do not CONSIDER ANYONE AN IDIOT.

I THINK THERE ARE BETTER AND MORE TALENTED SINGERS THAN THIS MAN. ONE OF THEM IS HERMANN PREY FOR EXAMPLE!

  • very well said!

  • I like his interpretation. Just because a servant is gracious in public doesn't mean he doesn't hate his master. I love this behind the scenes look at how Figaro feels about his master.

  • thing is - bryn will have stage directions and character directions - from the DIRECTOR. anyone think of that?

and its true - at this stage in the opera figaro is 'plebian', thats what is great figaro's 'evolution' as a character

  • Horrible!! The worst Figaro ever, he is just so vulgar I cannot satnd him. For all of you who say that Terfle is great why don´t you take a look at Hermann Prey´s performance.

  • Figaro is not an aristocratic character like the Count ! You cannot blame Terfel for making him appear "plebeian", because that's what he is !

  • I meant to say that his acting and singing are vulgar. Of course i understand the difference between the Count of almaviva who is a noble and Figaro who is just a servant. One thing have nothing to do with the other, and I am going to keep saying that Terfel seems to me the worst Figaro I `ve ever heared.

  • "heared" ?????? Are you serious?

  • Nice of you to pick on that. She's from Argentina. Would you be able to say all she's expressed here in Spanish?

  • Like andrewoconnorblue said, it depends on the director, and I'll add also the set/costume designer. The way they decorated everything, it looks like Middle Ages, and not an 18th century noble household. I think that's where the vulgaryti is coming from. Also, Bryn's crazy facial expression of course. It's quite funny actually the way his eyes seem to be about to pop out when he's straining =)

  • not horrible terfel is a 'bravo'bariton singer

  • Fantastic!

  • bravo bravissimo!!

  • He's so great in this role

  • Great performer!I love this guy!I simply love him! That's what I want to see when I go to the opera house!

  • Bravo !!!! Perfect 10 !!!
