It is clear here that the Democrats made it so that Blacks went back in time ..this was a great TV show and people liked it ...how is this making Blacks look ignorant ?.....when you look at "Desperate House Wives" that makes women look like whores ...Wake up Blacks ..you did have a place in TV and Movies and they took it away !
@patriciaannpat I agree to some extent, there are shows on tv that portrays people in a negative way. But you're right about wayyy to sensitive people.
As a result of the Jewish NAACP fellows, many well deserving black actors found themselves out of a job. Spencer Williams who played Andy, was a well respected black actor who prduced & directed many all black cast movies in the 30s & 40s.
The facts are that, it wasn't blacks who objected to the TV show. It was the NAACP. And if you know your history, the NAACP was run by leftist Jews who looked to befriend blacks as allies, so they concocted the notion that the show was demeaning to blacks. Many of the characters in the show, were respectable, doctors, judges, policemen, detectives, teachers and all various professionals. Only the main characters played the part of buffoons, no different from Laurel & Hardy or Kramden & Norton
@michiyoyoshiku Are you mad? This continues to be degrading all members of my ethnicity as it both protrays and supports the portrayal of all African Americans as ignorant feeble minded fools. Most disgusting of all is the fact that AAs were intelligent contributing members of society. Do yourselves a favor and watch The Great Debaters. THATS history. THIS is a travesty!
I used to listen to A&A on the radio with my grandpa. Love their humor. This episode makes me think of Sanford and Son and the interaction with Aunt Ester.
This show wasn't racist. If the characters were played by whites you would have another Honeymooners or L Love Lucy. Silly husbands, long suffering wives, mean mother-in-law, unlikely situations that they tell tall tales to get out of when it would be easier to tell the truth. Just like Ralph and Ed or Lucy and Ethel.
@MegaHeiress1 Amos n Andy wasn't racist. Ernestine Wade was an intelligent woman and she said they were always respectful of race. It was more making fun of harlem bums that happen to be black. do you think the beverly hillbillies was a racist show too?
What made A&A a problem for black folks was that it was the ONLY show on TV back then that featured black actors, and the most memorable characters were clowns and buffoons. With white buffoon characters (like Kramden and Norton), at least you had a show like "Playhouse 90" that featured serious white characters. Where was the "Playhouse 90" for black folks?
I've never seen this show before. But would it be accurate to say this could have been groundbreaking for a tv show having been on the air long before the Jeffersons?
I don't get why Amos & Andy was racist. It's not like ALL the black people in the show were ignorant stereotypes. Regular intelligent black people were seen all the time in contrast to the buffoon black people.
Yeah, Amos, Andy and Kingfish were idiots, but so were Ralph and Norton on the Honeymooners. I don't think they were representing their race, they were just funny buffoonish characters in a comedy show.
I've always wondered why this show is so often targeted as racist and unworthy of television. Have those critics looked at what's on now?! Jeeeeeeeeeeeez!!!
It is the roots of Amos and Andy that's problem. White people look past that, choosing to analyze the 1950's television program as the only source of reference. The television program is a sanitized version of the 1930's radio and stage performances.
@KRM2231964 I'm not looking past it, I'm saying the TV show as it evolved was not racist, it was a great ensemble cast of underground black actors who finally got to shine on the big stage. It shouldn't be lumped in with the minstrel shows of the radio version, just because it has the same characters and name.
@KRM2231964 As a matter of interest, do you think Gosden and Correll set out to make a racist radio show? From what I understand they were brought up in Harlem and based their characters on exaggerated versions of their neighbours. The racism comes from the fact that they're white. Do you consider Eddie Murphy a racist for portraying a comedy white man in one of his films? To me racism is a deliberate attack on another race or colour and, God knows, there's enough of that in the World.

@gamewizard YES, THEY ARE BLACK MEN. GO A LITTLE DEEPER IN WHAT I SAID AND YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN. IM NOT TALKING ABOUT RACE. BLACK AND WHITE ARE LEGAL TERMS. BUT YES THEY ARE BLACK MEN
you people are so dumb, HOW ARE THESE WHITE MEN IN BLACK FACES. THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE WHITE MEN, IN BLACK ARMS AND BLACK HANDS, AND BLACK VOICES, AND BLACK MUSLCE, AND BLACK FAT, AND BLACK BODIES, AND BLACK HAIR. NO ONE CAN DO THIS BUT BLACKS, GO TO THE DR. NUTCASES AND GET YOUR HEAD EXAMINED, IF THESE LOOK LIKE WHITE MEN TO YOU. WHITE MEN,PROMOTED IT, BUT THESE ARE BLACK MEN. AND WOMEN
enough with the discussion of if these people were white or not. were any of you there ?? probably not, neither was i but my granddad was ! who lived in harlem, watched this how, and tells me all about his times. the original show was with black people and then it had white people with black faces. i think this was the last amos n andy with an ALL BLACK cast
well maybe you didn't know but Amos and Andy were blackface. The two characters were portrayed by white actors. Do some research and learn some history.
@tessia86 It's true the orginal Amos and Andy were white men playing the black characters and they created the TV Series. You have to be blind and deaf not to realize that the TV actors are Black and not white men in black face. The creators were seen in black face to promote the radio show.
@tessia86 The actors on the TV show were Black. The White creators of the orginal radio show appeared in blackface to promote the radio show. Do some research and learn some history
@tessia86 Honestly. If you can't see that the Kingfish is African American you need some serious help. If YOU are African American and can't see it you REALLY need help.
It's tragic that we can't celebrate classic American television because it is politically incorrect to laugh at the humor on this show. Comedy is based on timing. Tim Moore was a trained vaudevillian, vaudeville was an extremely difficult comedy circuit ... vaudvillian comedy veterns were tried and true comedians. This show was funny because of good comedic timing and the title characters contrasted against (basically) the entire cast who were normal and dignified.
There was no blackface on the TV shows -- all were black actors and actresses. One theatrical movie was made in 1930 with the white radio actors in blackface...it seemed like a good idea at the time. By the way, the star of "The Cleveland Show" is voiced by Mike Henry, a white actor.
@djkaneck1 : In the middle of their get-down neighborhood comedy, their unique class and dignity shone through. Most of my neigbors were like them, as people tended to imitate what they saw on t.v., but they were real and genuine in their sympathy and capacity for love--always cooking things and bringing it over for us to share. I had a huge, sweet baby-sitter who could walk across our wooden floor without making a sound, and called me "Honey-chil' " For real.
I wasnt even an entire month old when this show first aired...I am so lucky that they were still going strong as I reached an age that I could watch & remember them...wonderful memories of simpler days...
Some white people seriously confuse me. They say that they absolutely hate us, yet they love watching or listening anything that has to do with us. It's like how Strom Thurmond, the segregationist politician, had an illegitimate child with a teenage black girl. Can you say IRONIC. No wonder why they nv got rid of us.... they would no longer have anything to obsess over.
I'm glad that most of the people that have commented on the Amos n Andy Show have the good sense to know what a great show it was, with a terrific and VERY talented cast! I'm sorry also that the NAACP pressured the network to take it off the air. I always wondered why they didn't do the same thing with Sanford & Son (they ran a junk yard) or Good Times (they lived in the ghetto). Seems like a double standard! What do you think?
@409442 i defintly agree. when you Media today and meet the browns they have sterotypical black chracters on them. The NAACP didnt think about atleast we could see ourselves on TV and atleast these were working actors at the time on Network TV. When they took the show off many of the actors were seen again on TV working. Come on NAACP lets think things through sometimes.
I saw the woman who played the part of Sapphire interviewed once about this show, and she said, How dare people criticize our work. We were actors doing comedy, and we felt we did a good job, and it was not racist, it was just good clean well done comedy! These shows are really very funny, with great comedians and very talented actors playing these parts! No difference in the comedy Lucille Ball did in I Love Lucy!
always one of my favorites. i listined to this on radio when i was a child. im 78 yrs. old. this brings back great memories of when i was young. i feel it needs to be revived. it would make great entertainment for todays tv. im surprised Eddy Murphy or Bill Cosby wouldn't want to make a production of this. this is black history at it's finest. i would be a loyal fan for this.
I was a kid in MA and this was one of my favorite shows. I thought they were just so funny and I still do. They are great comic actors & it's a pity they are not in reruns. Thanks for posting this, brings back fond memories.
my mom loves this show if it makes her happy thats all that matters to me. Thank you for uploading these i put them on for her to watch daily it makes her so happy.
What a classic tv series i knew in the 50s. I have this on dvd box set. i love this series.they get a bad rAP no pun here. its sad. great taent maybe stereotype but superb acting Tim Moore we all love ya god rest your soul.this tv film historian concures ive seen far worse.TOMK
what a great tv series, a classic it gets a bad RAP no pun intended. i recall it well in the 50s on local tv.I have the dev set on it. ive seen so much more worse. Tim Moore alone was the star , the cast superb. it had its steotypes but look at what comedy cane later. god rest your soul Kingfish. TOMK Tv film historian
I used to think the opening music for this show was angels singing. of course I was only maybe 3 then. I love this show and always will. they really need to bring it back on t.v. cause it's better than anything on now.
I enjoyed this as a kid but always wondered why it was called Amos and Andy when the show always seemed to feature the Kingfish and Andy most and seldom involved Amos. I loved when Safire and her mother hassled Kingfish.
Amos n Andy were originally on radio and later made 2-3 feature films, all with more of Amos. Freeman Gosdyn & Charles Correll played the parts. They spent a year looking for the right cast & they hit the mark with each character. When the NAACP flipped out that it insulted blacks, it was off the air. Cast members said they were paid very well & loved the stories. "It was fun." I have every episode on disc & they are priceless. Most thinking blacks don't have a prob. w/it & wud like to C them.
most "thinking blacks"? lol that has to be the most underhanded racist comment even if you are black yourself. this show is so obviously racist regardless of how the actors got paid and how much fun they had. nobody obviously wanted to rock the boat if in fact they got paid so well. so you truly think this is not insulting to blacks?
I just watched another episode and I can see why I loved this show so much more than the honeymooners (which had similar plot line - smart woman, well intentioned men but always gong off into hairbrained schemed and ideas. But in this show, it's true everyone is dressed very nice, I may have to watch a few more to find the sterotypes but to me it's 100% better Honeymooners, and FUNNY. I was 3 I had no concept of race or stereotypes or even blackface.
I am glad I found this. I was about 3 when it aired, and I never felt the racism or stereotypes, I just thought it was funny, and I thought it was very similar in plot lines to the honeymooners which I HATED.
Yes even at 3 years old I had my preferences. I'll have to watch a few more to see what was so bad about it, but at 3 years old it was just funny, and I remember some characters I really liked. Always hated the Honeymooners, I thought they were a bad rip off. nancy
I left out the word not. I meant you would not had those shows without this show. This has all the elements of a sitcom and would work with any race of actors. They never refer to their race. Instead of focusing on their skin color maybe one should realize that is their personalities.
I'm not black either, but funny is funny. I agree that, especially at the time these shows aired, they engendered racist sentiment, especially since back then we still had Jim Crow laws and many whites didn't hide their bias. But you can't deny that these shows were funny. I remember Amos N' Andy fairly clearly--so you can figure out my age sort of. I doubt that racial stereotyping is a good thing. However, in a better world we could and should be able to see the humor in all things.
Actually I am Black - obvious from my previous comment and the amount of thumbs down I got from last comment - and I actually do find even the most blatant stereotyping from this time period to be funny. I do suspect that my reason for laughing my be quite different from yours, however. & from your comment there is one thing I must note - this type of comedy did not really engender racist sentiments - they actually reflected & reconfirmed the racist feelings.
True...obviously racism won't originate BECAUSE of shows such as these or those that were even MORE racist. Personally, nothing is "over the line" for me. I laugh at jokes that poke fun at my heritage as well. I'm always amazed at how seriously we take ourselves. But that doesn't mean that I tolerate actual racism or bigotry. One would hope that simply watching Amos N' Andy, or even laughing at a racial or religious joke would not create more ignorance and hate.
Well, actually people who can't see the humor in Amos N' Andy or in someone like Eddie Rochester Anderson on the Jack Benny show have no sense of humor. I even laugh at Al Jolson in black face. My grandparents even laughed at the comedy of this period and of course preferred it to the more raw and explicit type of comedy that is en vogue today.
The only comedy that I can't watch during this period Stepin Fetchit. Now that is painful to watch.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that they have no sense of humor necessarily. I just think that they are so busy advertising their right-mindedness to the rest of the world that they are afraid that if they lighten up and admit that something objectionable can also be funny, that someone might be watching LOL. Again...we take ourselves too seriously.
@Mxyzptlk562 :"this type of comedy did not really engender racist sentiments - they actually reflected & reconfirmed the racist feelings"......I couldnt DISagree more......These characters engendered an infinantly more "endearing" sentiment than anything else!
HarlemMa07- You are incorrect. All the actors were as you see them....black. Blackface went out with vaudville. These actors were hand picked, enjoyed their characters and their craft. Pros every one.
Additionally, who was dumber on TV back then, than Gleason's Kramden, or Carney's "Ed Norton?" WEre these racial stereotypes that we should be offended by and bann forever from our memory?
Kingfish and Andy and others were comedic "types," of course, that's what comedy is and always has been based on, from the ancient Greeks to Commedia Dell Arte, to Jolson, to Kramer. (Seinfeld).
Stock characters have always been the backbone of comedy.
This discussion is nuts. These people are actors, comedic actors. Tim Moore was a veteran comedic actor for 40 years on and off Broadway.
But many of the characters depicted on Amos and Andy were NOT comedic but dignified, working-class people of Harlem, something about which the show was initially praised by many black actors of the time. Take the woman who answers the phone. A negative stereotype?
It wasn't until the militant and angry blacks took over that... well, you know...
i grew up watching these shows. i loved these people. the shows depicting white people do not represent me any more than i thought these shows represented black people. it was just a great show that some people succeeded in getting taken away from us..... it would be great to have programs like this again...... what a great loss to all tv viewers.
If they brought all of these back on the air, people would start watching them all the time just like they did back then. I'm a white Southerner and I never thought bad of any of the actors in this show and I watched it for years. Actually this show IMPROVED relations between blacks and whites because whites enjoyed the show so much. It was a really STUPID decision to take this off the air.
I, too, am a female Southerner and watched these in the'50's on tv and it was my only window to blacks. And, I too, never thought negatively towards the actors.,Gee, I thought they were as funny as "I Love Lucy" ~ much funnier than "I Married Joan" or "My Little Margie". It's all windows to other worlds ~~~> tap dancers, singers, dramas, muscials, etc. Sure there were some bad decisions made, but STOP trying to re-write history.,., THAT is the most shameful of all!
I watched this show as a young boy. I loved it because it was funny, pure and simple. FUNNY. It made me laugh. I did not see color, just funny actors.
Looking at the shows here on Youtube...I don't see what the big deal about wanting these shows taking off the air. They are actors & I didn't find anything offensive about this show at all nor do I find anything offensive about the Beverly Hibillies, Petticoat Jucntion or Green Acres. I'm a black female & believe what the NAACP should be rallying against are the mysognist rap videos that are out now a days!
Good point. Also, could the characters from the movie Dumb & Dumber, even be made using any other race or even by females without some sort of protest happening?
dear i know how old you mus t be around but i do know that in your day there was great great shows vs todays sir i wish there bring the good old shows back
Great show. In the NY area during the mid to late 50's, they showed it in the mornings (watched during the summer) along with Topper and My Little Margie. To me, it was one of the all time great TV shows. Tim Moore, who played Kingfish, was an old time vaudeville performer. Great talent. Not just him; everyone was good.
This show is racist because the actors are white painted with, what they called back then "black face," which is just black paint covering up their their faces, also the show revolves around african american lives and many of the things these people do are considered typical things african americans do.

As a result of the Jewish NAACP fellows, many well deserving black actors found themselves out of a job. Spencer Williams who played Andy, was a well respected black actor who prduced & directed many all black cast movies in the 30s & 40s.
MrCommonsense743 6 months ago
The facts are that, it wasn't blacks who objected to the TV show. It was the NAACP. And if you know your history, the NAACP was run by leftist Jews who looked to befriend blacks as allies, so they concocted the notion that the show was demeaning to blacks. Many of the characters in the show, were respectable, doctors, judges, policemen, detectives, teachers and all various professionals. Only the main characters played the part of buffoons, no different from Laurel & Hardy or Kramden & Norton

The show was FUNNY. End of story. Nobody had any fun made that wasn't being done in any white sitcom of the day.
And frankly, they all had nicer furniture and a better standard living than The Honeymooners.
And Kingfish didn't mangle the language any worse than Archie Bunker.
It was FUNNY! When I was 7 and when I was 57. Still funny.
OrganCat 7 months ago
This show wasn't racist. If the characters were played by whites you would have another Honeymooners or L Love Lucy. Silly husbands, long suffering wives, mean mother-in-law, unlikely situations that they tell tall tales to get out of when it would be easier to tell the truth. Just like Ralph and Ed or Lucy and Ethel.

9bahai9 11 months ago
It is the roots of Amos and Andy that's problem. White people look past that, choosing to analyze the 1950's television program as the only source of reference. The television program is a sanitized version of the 1930's radio and stage performances.
KRM2231964 11 months ago
@KRM2231964 I'm not looking past it, I'm saying the TV show as it evolved was not racist, it was a great ensemble cast of underground black actors who finally got to shine on the big stage. It shouldn't be lumped in with the minstrel shows of the radio version, just because it has the same characters and name.
terracottapie 10 months ago
@KRM2231964 As a matter of interest, do you think Gosden and Correll set out to make a racist radio show? From what I understand they were brought up in Harlem and based their characters on exaggerated versions of their neighbours. The racism comes from the fact that they're white. Do you consider Eddie Murphy a racist for portraying a comedy white man in one of his films? To me racism is a deliberate attack on another race or colour and, God knows, there's enough of that in the World.

999JPETZ 1 year ago
There was no blackface on the TV shows -- all were black actors and actresses. One theatrical movie was made in 1930 with the white radio actors in blackface...it seemed like a good idea at the time. By the way, the star of "The Cleveland Show" is voiced by Mike Henry, a white actor.

I'm not black either, but funny is funny. I agree that, especially at the time these shows aired, they engendered racist sentiment, especially since back then we still had Jim Crow laws and many whites didn't hide their bias. But you can't deny that these shows were funny. I remember Amos N' Andy fairly clearly--so you can figure out my age sort of. I doubt that racial stereotyping is a good thing. However, in a better world we could and should be able to see the humor in all things.
rickcee 2 years ago
Actually I am Black - obvious from my previous comment and the amount of thumbs down I got from last comment - and I actually do find even the most blatant stereotyping from this time period to be funny. I do suspect that my reason for laughing my be quite different from yours, however. & from your comment there is one thing I must note - this type of comedy did not really engender racist sentiments - they actually reflected & reconfirmed the racist feelings.
Mxyzptlk562 2 years ago
True...obviously racism won't originate BECAUSE of shows such as these or those that were even MORE racist. Personally, nothing is "over the line" for me. I laugh at jokes that poke fun at my heritage as well. I'm always amazed at how seriously we take ourselves. But that doesn't mean that I tolerate actual racism or bigotry. One would hope that simply watching Amos N' Andy, or even laughing at a racial or religious joke would not create more ignorance and hate.
rickcee 2 years ago
Well, actually people who can't see the humor in Amos N' Andy or in someone like Eddie Rochester Anderson on the Jack Benny show have no sense of humor. I even laugh at Al Jolson in black face. My grandparents even laughed at the comedy of this period and of course preferred it to the more raw and explicit type of comedy that is en vogue today.
The only comedy that I can't watch during this period Stepin Fetchit. Now that is painful to watch.
Mxyzptlk562 2 years ago 2
I wouldn't go so far as to say that they have no sense of humor necessarily. I just think that they are so busy advertising their right-mindedness to the rest of the world that they are afraid that if they lighten up and admit that something objectionable can also be funny, that someone might be watching LOL. Again...we take ourselves too seriously.

But if they're black-- OH, NO! RACIST!
LazlosPlane 2 years ago 6
This discussion is nuts. These people are actors, comedic actors. Tim Moore was a veteran comedic actor for 40 years on and off Broadway.
But many of the characters depicted on Amos and Andy were NOT comedic but dignified, working-class people of Harlem, something about which the show was initially praised by many black actors of the time. Take the woman who answers the phone. A negative stereotype?
It wasn't until the militant and angry blacks took over that... well, you know...

I used to rush home from school in the late 50's to watch it on channel 3 out of Hartford CT at 4:00 PM.
