  • they didn't film the feet? wtf?

  • Thumbs up if you watched this video MUTED with Jumpstyle music in the background! :D

  • True, though

  • loved how they used the bit out of riverdance - with the stamps etc..

  • Wow! Absolutely amazing!

  • amazing dancers, especially the guy. the girl isn't on time through the majority of the first dance though

  • Great dancers!!!!

  • Is the music Leahy, in first set?

  • Why must the hair always be so curly?

  • @lrvdnc I have been told that the curled hair pulls the body up straight.

  • @dickdona its because traditional irish girls are said to have curly hair and plus it make it look like you are jumping higher.

  • @lrvdnc it's a wig :P

  • i do irish step dancing!its amazing!

  • "Et bien j'en suis tomber sur le culs!!! ils sonts FORMIDABLE encore BRAVOS " MC

  • wow wow wow! people in canada are still good at irish dance too!!!

  • presume there from the usa ,,great learning our dance ,,they look excellent :)

  • I should clear this up for everyone...Kelly and Conor are both World Champion Irish dancers. Both have placed first at the reigionals multiple times and I believe also the North Americans. They also no longer compete, and Kelly has her TCRG. I highly doubt that they needed anyone's input on their crossing and turn out, or really anything else. Its also just a performance....so loosen up people!

  • CRAP

  • their feet arent turned out... he messed up at 1:35!!! they arent kicking their bums! i like them a lot though! not so enthusiastic! that is all!

  • her dress is soooo pretty!!!

  • her arms..when together they are supposed to be in a W. each person a prefect V

  • They have no crossover.... They must not be An Coimisiun dancers.

Good otherwise, but the videographer must not have much experience he hardly showed their feet!!

  • wow they're good... i think they got kind of tired towards the end though because their clicks weren't very high. the rest was really good though - great job! :)

  • u cnt c d feet

  • omg.. it looks funny, but kinda cool :)

  • OK..tip for filming dancers...always show the feet....always

  • @banjony +thumbs up(accidentally hit down)

  • yall are both amazing dancers but the boy can move his feet so much faster you can just tell but amazing job! and i LOVE the dress:D

  • the boy is obviously way more skilled than the girl damn he can move his feet!

  • @dubspins You couldn't do any better than the girl,so don't judge her.Their both talented people..

  • r u guys trying to do double clicks? bc that us not at all how u are suppose to do them. u actually have to jump in the air! got it?

  • very very good

  • It's nice to see that there are multiethnic/people of different races who do irish dance :) i'm half asian (i think they are too, judging by their appearance) and this really made me feel less alone.

  • why not, its a beautiful dance and theyre good at it :)

  • there awsome

  • These are two amazing young kids..... but, am I the only one that feels that they are concentrating on the young man's talent in this video?? He seems to almost be showboating...

  • I love the music in this!

  • do you know what song is playing at 5:25 in this video its my favorite reel!

  • Not bad good stamina but try finishing your steps and crossing your knees over and feet out a bit more. =)

  • Those are 2 of my dance teachers at Comerford! They are trully amazing at dancing and this is more traditional but when yopu see kelly and connor dancing in real life they look way better!

  • omg the bloke is well gudd

  • she is not crossing...:S i can't bear it.. and before a show have to clean your shoes.

  • Also, I'll publicly apologise for calling you 'ignorant'. Since you mellowed on your stance towards me, I think I also should. As a debater I want to make sure I show my opposition that I'm stalwartally defending my point, but also not come across too rudely.

  • I appreciate that, and I will apologize for calling you silly. :)

  • And, to show how modern Irish stepdance can go with great traditional music, watch?v=JLeCLRK8Ws8 .

Set-dance, slip jigs in hard shoes, with Donegal-style Paddy Glackin on fiddle..

You may not agree with me entirely on my views of tradition vs. innovation. However, I hope you agree with me that there is a presence of an older-style. This was what I attempted to explain when I made my very first post on this topic, when I said that there is an old style (Sean-nos) with no arm reqs.

  • Though, I do regret saying that Sean-nos is the real traditional dance. Technically it is, as it was the beginnings, the old-style. However, as long as anything that becomes accepted into tradition, it is tradition, in this case it's modern stepdance.

  • Just to be completely clear, anyone who takes Irish dance classes knows about traditional music. It's all we use in class, competitions, and the majority of performances. We know the traditional set dance tunes as well as the 'non-traditional' set dance tunes, which only means that the dance is not handed down as the music is.

  • Thanks. I get your points too.

  • I've seen that video... it's one of my favorites. :)

  • Her Hornpipe is just brilliant. I love it. Does anyone know the steps? I'd love to have them...

  • you could drive a truck through her knees, tho

  • That is just wat i was thinking!!

  • My legs hurt just looking at that floor

  • what is this song called?

  • B Minor by Leahy

  • Holy shizz....did I just see the Donny step there???I learnt that years ago!!Kewl!!!

  • Good Up On The Toes More

  • I love this song!!!!! It's so awesome!!!! The dancers are really good except the arm movements. I don't like them:( But they are still great...

  • The reason why they do their arms the way they do is because those are traditional Irish dance arms.

  • Actually if you really want to talk about real traditional irish dance, you're talking about sean-nos dance, which has no arm requirements. This Irish dance popularized by Riverdance is pretty much modernized.

  • you are silly ... arms down has always been a part of irish dance

  • I've never denied this form of Irish dance and I did not dismiss it or ignore it. However, over here it is your ignorance, an ignorance that there is an existence of Sean-nos dance.

Irish traditional music descended from the dance tradition. Like the music which came after, Sean-nos dance had regional styles. Modern Irish dance is almost (if not completely) devoid of regional qualities.

I'm taking it that you learn Irish dance, the kind you're championing. Do you learn about regional styles?

  • Comment removed

  • Therefore, I say that Sean-nos dance had no arm requirements, except for the modern Irish dacne that was developed from it, and popularized and generalized by none other than Riverdance.

  • just a tid-bit I found on wickipedia for ya .... "A more credible explanation attributes it to the dance masters of the eighteenth century, who doubled as teachers of decorum. Even in social ceili dances, which required hand holds, clapping, and such, dancers were required to rely on posture rather than the use of arms for balance. Such strict upper body control was considered essential to the poise becoming of a lady or gentleman." So, did Riverdance begin in the 18th century? ;)

  • I liked how you said Riverdance began in the 18th century. So what came before?

I've never once stated that I loathe modern Irish stepdance, or disregard it. I accept it as a form of Irish culture, and I do love to see those dancers do those really nice routines, they are lovely to watch. My only problem is that people are not accepting that there is a older form. Also, my preference is towards old-style, reasons being I play the music, which descended from that kind of dance,

  • and also I like to be different. I like being the old-fashioned type of person. I'm just 18, by the way.

I accept that it was the act of innovation and people doing things in a new way that heralded in modern stepdance. But that's good, because it has been accepted into tradition. Seamus Tansey, flute player remarked how some Kerry polkas weren't actually composed in Ireland, but Scotland. But they became part of the tradition, thus passing off as great traditional Irish folk music.

  • Unlike many ideas appearing in Irish folk traditions today, like what Tony MacMahon called "dreary rattling of universal bones on a desert highway without soul, without hope", where people would take music and dance and inject it with loads of modernized ideology, and try to pass it off as what can be go beside tradition, or be part of it, whatever. This is bad, because it clearly is modernization attempting to take over what is originally there: tradition, and replace something completely new.

  • This is bad on itself, modernisation of this type clearly clobbers head on with tradition (watch?v=RPhFh72VxZo . The dance in this Chime CNY2008 video definitely shows loads of Irish stepdance, but this one merely shows some funny new modern dance, put together with Irish dance!), but what makes it worse is that when people use Irish folk music and dance to make money out of it. So, my problem also lies with Riverdance.

  • Of course, today is the modern world, so Irish folk music is hard to be done in a 'not for money' sort of thing. Well, yeah. But when people keep viewing the bombardment of Riverdance and that sort and thinks: "Hey, this is Irish folk culture for centuries!", that to me is a problem. Tony MacMahon says such productions help show the world Ireland is a great, cultural and nice place. But in the process of this are negatives, not showing the world the very beginnings. The old-styles.

  • Old-style dancing, as you can see isn't that pretty or interesting when you first start off viewing it. I can understand when people do not take in old-style stuff quickly. However I personally feel it is still important to educate the layman on what actually IS the tradition. New is great, but must not trample over the old and traditional and leave for dead.

  • what do you mean by 'regional' styles??? Irish dance is a tradition that has been passed down for hundreds of years ... take, for instance, the 30 traditional ceili dances. they have been done the same way for centuries and have never changed.

  • "what do you mean by 'regional' styles???"

You seem not to be wary about regional styles. You either 1) Reject the idea of Sean-nos or 2) You are just completely unaware.

Regional styles came about because in those days travelling was time-consuming, expensive or not prevalent enough. People didn't travel far, and therefore regional styles concentrated within their areas. Different regions had different ways of doing things, like the music that descended from the dancing tradition.

  • Wikipedia gives an accurate, succinct description of Sean-nos dance and music. However I take it you don't believe in Wikipedia.

So, copy and paste the following to the Youtube URL: watch?v=XldZ-9cj6OE&

Two regional Sean-nos styles: Munster and Connemara.

If you don't think a youtube video uploader is good enough, go watch?v=LxEdv_3C-B4 . That is Sean-nos set dance. You're wrong if you think it was taken by some annonymous person. This video is from the RTÉ archives.

  • Also, that was taken at the 1967 Fleadh Ceoil.

    1967!

During a time when folk dance and music was still faithful to its traditional roots.

Please go and search about Sean-nos dance (and traditional music if you really want to be thorough; the music is at the heart and soul with the dance together. Also music has more regional style divisions). Unless you reject the whole idea of Sean-nos, which makes you worse off than an Asian (Singaporean) who extensively reads about Irish dance and music!

  • One more thing I need to address:

Though I much prefer the traditional forms I'm championing, I've never said I hated form of modern Irish dance, the Irish stepdance. (you see? I read much.) I never even said that its bad, or its NOT folk dance. I just said it's the modern form, which people think is the original, traditional form of folk dance, due to how Riverdance put into everybody's minds the ideas of traditional folk dance.

  • I'm not arguing that there were different regions that had their own specific styles. However, the first video, their arms are down, even if not completely rigid. The second video, that is a ceili dance. The ceilis don't have your arms down most of the time. There's a lot of catching and swinging partners, etc. You haven't really proven your point.

  • Of course you are not arguing that there were regional-specific styles (lightly-paraphrased). Earlier you asked me, what I meant by 'regional' styles which obviously you weren't aware of, hitherto now.

The tid-bit you quoted wasn't found in Wikipedia. The text was from another website, but that's good. I agree with whatever its said, but I reiterate that this form of dance was the result of descendency from the original old-style dancing.

  • By the way I know it wasn't from Wikipedia as I searched your quoted text on google but it didn't turn up as text on Wikipedia. But, it doesn't matter.

The text you quoted talked about dace masters doubling as teachers of decorum. Yes, I'll accept that this was part of how old-style dance which descended into the new styles we know of today. In a link I'll send to you via private message, it'll explain a little better. Not to comprehensively, but gives a great overview.

  • Based on your comments regarding the two videos, you ahve acknowledged the presence of Sean-nos. I can now proceed with better ease.

I have proven my point that in old-style dancing there were no requirements. watch?v=qmE6izsoR4g .

Even in the links I gave earlier, it shows they have their arms at their side, but not rigid like you said. Are they obeying any rules on arm rigidity? Even if their arms are at the side, technically the answer is no, because its not a total adherence.

  • Also, please: I don't want/need/have to quarrel with you. Proof is all on the internet.

  • its a pity that you dont see much of their feet

  • wow this is great!! amazing!

  • ah the gud old ur ma. thats how u can tell wether sum1 is irish

    xxxxxx

  • Actually, the first thing's a treble reel, one of the oldest dances, combined with a ceili, another traditional dance. Its modernized, but it is also true dancing. And this is what Irish dance is becoming (minus the arm moves) and this is a dance out. Lighten up! Its good!

  • Who died and made you pope?

    -jcr

  • THIS SONG! My goodness! This is the first reel I ever danced to! Which CD is this from? I'd love to have it again.

  • It's called Leahy... 1. B Minor.

  • I love Leahy! and that song :)

  • great perfomance

  • omg!!! what a poor comment !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • half of these steps are from Heartland-Riverdance!

  • These kids are really good!!! There is HOPE for America!!!

  • your comment is annoying

  • ur ma is annoying

  • lol

    go playing outside

  • okay

  • WAT IS THIS REEL CALLED???????????

  • it is called B Minor, from the cd A tour of Music 1998. It's by Leahy.

  • Pity that they dont show much of there feet at the start but ther good dancers =)

  • I wish we could see her feet :(

  • Very nice,

  • Thoroughly enjoyable!

  • I wonder if she gets more exhausted from the smiling than the dancing xD

    All in all, great performance.

  • very nice

  • Anybody know the name of the first song in this clip? I took Irish step-dancing years ago and I have been looking for this song for a long time! We used to practice our reels to this song all the time. Thanks!

  • This is Leahy

  • For the most part this is really good.. :) nice job to the dancers .

  • ARGGG I hate when people film Irish dancers from the waist up!!! Hello?? nothing is going on there! Show the feet :-)

  • wow this was reeeeally impressive

  • I wish I were half that coordinated.

  • Yes, at first they cut out the feet. But, I must say most of the Irish dances on You Tube are montages. I appreciated, after the feet were shown, that the whole dance was taped.

  • Why in blazes would you say that? This is a performance, it's supposed to be fun. And I used to smile all the time in competitions, and I was never marked down for it.

  • Yeahh Init Samee Xx

Smiling Helps My Dance Teachers Tell Me To Smilee Xx

  • You Do Smile In Irish Dancing Xx

  • You always smile its part of the performance! who told YOU not to?

  • not accurate. you can smile. especially in a performance, where you SHOULD smile. And i smile in competition and do quite well, actually.

  • uck!

ther arms wen they came in were terrible!

they were good the rest of the time

  • Who the heck tapes Irish dancers and cuts out their feet?

  • seriously! without the feet it is just a bouncing head!

  • wow they are reeeeeealy good

  • Oh I know them! I believe that's Conner and Kelly Nagan. They go to Comerford school. I see them at like every feis I go to.

  • What are the names of the tunes played on this video?

    Great job!

  • i just know the first one is "call to dance" by leahy

  • I'm not sure what the name of the tune is, but the second song is by the group Beoga.

  • this is my favorite irish step video!!!!!

  • they are both great dancers! and i think she might have been doing the whole not quite crossing thing on purpose to get heal clicks in-between =]

either way they were both absolutely fabulous!

  • Agreed, I think the whole not crossing much thing from the girl was a stylistic thing, which, while ID does require crossing was a very cool effect!

  • They go to the Comerford School of Irish Dance in Seattle.

  • This is awesome. I want my Irish lasses to learn to do it as well.

  • the arnt from canada.. i dont think i do believe they go to the same school the Gathard sisters do which is in Washington

  • does anyone know the second song?

  • That is from the group Beoga from their album, A Lovely Madness.

  • This is amazing! Love it! I'm very, very impressed.

  • why do the girls all wear the curly wigs?

  • It's a tradition way back from Ireland that we carry on when we dance. As much as Irish dancing has been modernized, we still try to incorporate the old ways and the culture.

  • The curls help to emphasize the bounce in the dancing. Some people don't wear wigs - they just curl their hair instead. :)

  • Beautiful dancing, shame about the sound-it was very clear so couldnt hear the taps too well-I wish I could dance as well as that ;)

  • does anyone know who made the dress?

  • i want to say it looks alot like a dancing in celtic dress.

  • i think it is a DIC dress, their dresses are beautiful!

  • What song is this? It is terrific, and they danced amazingly!

  • It's B Minor by Leahy. Leahy is a great group made up of 8 siblings. They are from Lakefield, Canada, and play some AWESOME Irish tunes!

  • I love the dress, It is soo pretty, im geting my open dress some time soon, thankfully, Really good, were was this my I ask?

  • Wow, I knew they were good, but not THAT good ! Amazing, world championships ? Woooh.. Really amazing :)

I prefer the part 2 of the video :) (with the Beoga song)

  • they're quite good! the crossing could be better but just listen to the speed of that song!!!!! it's SOOOOO FAST!!!!!!!

  • My lanta, I cannot believe people are criticizing their turnout. These two are definitely in the top percent of dancers in the world. They are incredible. And yet to sum up their performance in a simple "oh, bad turnout," is so cheap.

    Anyway, they rock.

  • as far i as i can tell the girls turnout is awesome just crossing at tyms isnt quite thea but that cud b the dance

  • I simply cannot believe the new ADCRG's here on this video. I am sure they are the authority when it comes to turnout. Did anyone notice the stage they were daning on? Not exactly the best! When I do performances, I do not dance my best on a stage like that. It was a great performance, and I am sure would have been even better on a more suitable stage. People like erinttt just need to shhh.

  • Kelly has won her Regionals multiple times and is a world medal holder. Same with Connor! When you're doing a dance out you have to take some of the energy that you normally put into things like over cross and turn it into performance energy. Believe me, Kelly needs no help crossing. She has some of the most beautiful turnout and cross I've ever seen. Maybe she was dancing with a 102 fever that day, or coming off injury, or just felt she could perform better if she didn't dance competition style

  • They are fantastic.. from Seattle and they do dance for Comerford.. They are really nice to everyone.Kelly was a starter for my daughters first few dances when she was a beginner and she is very sweet! Conor just placed 8th in the world this last weekend in Ireland!

  • Everyone is an expert...KN has consistently been a top placer at NANs and worlds so I don't think her turnout and crossover are too much of a drama. When you're dancing for fun to music like this it's more about performance and energy than crossover and turnout.

Great performance and what a fun experience for them.

  • her turnout is fine-she just has a few places where she needs to cross more, close her knees.

  • wow r they chinese???

  • They are both really great dancers. His turn out is excellent, but hers needs improvement. That's not to say she is inferior, she just needs to cross over more.

  • He is an amazing dancer... the girl has bad turnout

  • I think she's a beautiful dancer, they both are and look like they both really enjoy it as well, that's what it's all about! Plus the guys rhythm is amazing!

  • Great dancing! Pity the videographer didn't know how to film it.

  • I love the white/red dress ! It's really beautiful.

    Nice vid !

  • I believe those are the Nagans'. Yes,they are Tony Comerford's students. I have seen them at a couple feisanna.

    Becca ♥

  • I really liked this vid!!! good dancing!!

the girl just needs to improve on crossover!!

  • i love her dress

  • I believe they are from the Tony Comerford School.

  • Any idea what dance school these two are from?... Was this event held in China?

  • that first dress is soooooooo pretty!
