wow I think I'm going to get one! Earlier I thought I'd buy Sony Bloggie CM5 but I later came across this one and it looks perfect for me :) Do you get it already?
@dogruns Yep, I bought it August 2009... watch part 3 of this sample video coverage of the TZ7 for some sample videos I shot myself. I also took it with me on vacation to Indonesia September last year, mainly to shoot video with it. We're still editing the video but when it's ready it will also be uploaded in parts to YouTube so all can see what gorgeous video this little camera shoots.
@Cade78 wow...I can't wait to see the new vids!!! I checked the part 3, it's impressive :D actually, now I'm hesitating between TZ7 and LX3...TZ7 makes better quality video while LX3 makes better quality photo....difficult to choose one!!!
The zoom looks good at 1:27. I tried to take a video of birds [feathered type] bathing in a puddle at full zoom with my Canon Ixus 70. The results were unrecognisable...all pixelated...Now I know why you can't use the zoom while taking a video. It's pointless. But this camera looks like it does the business. One to consider buying I think.
@TheDepotCat The Canon Ixus 70 only uses digital zoom when you zoom in during videos (all Canon's do this to this date, even the HD ones). That's why the quality get's so pixelated, the TZ7 can use the optical zoom while filming, which is the real deal. Before buying my TZ7 I was also a Canon user.... now you know why I switched sides :)
Nice quality from all what you showed in the test. Really liked the zoom at the end and speed of focus. Car at .54 looked like he was going against traffic. haha
Hi man, very nice vid. i have an problem, coz i recently bought the same camera (lumix dmc tz7) and the quality of my vids is not as good as in ur video. may be u do have some ideas for reason of this bad situation..

I just ordered my ZS3 after watching some of these YouTube clips. Amazing video! I've been tempted to get a HD camcorder, but this may do well as both and avoid having to lug around a full size camcorder. I got the 16GB card with it, so hopefully that will allow plenty of recording time. How long does the battery last?
Somebody tell me how to get rid or the blue lines that show up in the camera when you are recording video at night. the blue lines will show up on some street lights or when a police car has the emergancy lights on

Kerrav0n- The still pictures look great. I think much better than Cannon. Battery life is great when shooting still, but does burn a little quick while in AVCHD mode
i just got zs3 in and i cant get it to take hd video worth a crap when i put it on the computer in mpeg mode or the other one neither of them look hd they look like crap quality! is there something im missing!
Seriously thinking of getting either this over the Canon SX200. The ability to zoom in HD video recording, AVCHD and better sound is edging it for me, as well as an ultra-wide lens.
My only concerns are the rumoured poor battery life and poorer still image quality than the Canon. Are my concerns justified?
Yeah I recognize Amsterdam anywhere, my spiritual home, away from my real home of London (and Jamaica).
I just got this camera. How did you get the video to upload in HD to here? I uploaded a video, the sound quality is great, but the picture is not clear at all. Thanks
Just bought the camera, but do not know how to download the video to my Mac. Tried Quick Play and it does not work. Downloading pictures is ok. Please help.
I've just finished with uploading bunch of videos, majority of them taken with tz-7 (HD, quality set to Low). Overall, I'm satisfied with camera. Only thing that bothers me is that sound of motor when zooming in/out (it can be heard only on silent movies with no much background nose). But I think I can live with that.
Im considering buying one of these, but I don't know which memory card to choose. I'd like a 16 Gb SD-card, but do I have to buy the expensive one with 20 mb/s or is 15 mb/s enough? 15 mb/s is more than enough for normal cameras but this camera films in High Definition..
Yea I was debating over the Ultra II (class 4) but went with the Patriot Iris series (class 6) because I was afraid my videos would lag using a card with a slower write speed. Have you compared class 4 and 6? Is there a big difference?
The TZ7 has an aperture of F3.3-4.9 and that's not a particularly great range for capturing low light photos or video. In low light conditions avoid using optical zoom so the aperture remains wide open at F3.3 and the most light possible is reaching the image sensor. Don't know if anyone makes a compact camera that can do HD video with a better aperture of say F2.8 at full wide angle.
I usually shoot in the iA mode which gives me great results in most conditions, the camera will then pick the best settings for you on the fly when you're filming (or taking photo's).
I got my TZ7 about a month ago and I love it, the optical image stabilization is really cool. Optical zoom is a bit slow in videos but it's not that bad, my only complaint is the videos are very dark, anyone else have this problem? In photo mode it's normal on the default exposure but when I record a video it looks like the exposure is set to -2, it kind of sucks for dark or low light indoor scenes.
How did you get this to be widescreen? I tried filming with my new panasonic tz7 and it didn't turn out nearly as good as this. somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong? my quality looks also much worse than this.
for all people on windows that cant play these avchd files download a codec program called COREAVC its a program that runs in the baclground when u open these files and allows them to play in windows media player btw here is the serial number for the coreavc professional demo thats goes around this makes it full software and free
Hey Man..i got a lumix zs3 couple of days ago..and i got 16 GB memory card, and i was at a concert and recording in HD..but i dunno why...there was this msg that pops up n stops the recording..it was like " recording cancelled due to the limitation of speed of the memory card "..now its pretty obvious, the problem is in the memory card...is there a specific brand i should buy that will work fine with my camera and makes me record HD vidz wiz no problems ?..thx bro
It has to do with the CLASS of the CArd. Make sure you are buying Class 6 ,NOT class 4 or 2. the write speed of the 6 is the only class that will capture HD Video.
Well, The one i have is class 6 and it is SDHC...and the brand name is Transcend....i really dont know why this happened, but does this depends on the motion speed of the objects or thats not necessary ?...
I also use the Transcend 16GB class 6 SDHC memory card and mine is working like a charm. Just got back from a month long vacation to Indonesia and my TZ7 went along filming all the beauty of this country. It has nothing to do with the speed of moving objects why your card is not working well, my guess is that your memory card is defective. You sure you got a genuine Transcend card? On eBay they sell fakes that are indeed slower that the real Transcend cards.
Yep, check if it's a genuine Transcend card on the site of Transcend. Go to "Service Center" and choose "Product Verification". If it's genuine I would return it for a new one... if it's a counterfeit I would ask my money back and buy from another seller.
Hey i really need some help, i have the exact same camera just got it few days ago except its the blue version and when i upload the pics and stuff to my lap top and i go to the file to drag the pics into my picture folder, it only shows the pictures and none of the videos i have made, iv looked through all of the files that go to my computer when uploading from my camera and i cant find the videos only the pictures, can you please tell me why and how to get them/ find them?
( this is my other account i forgot pass word for lazarus beard ) But anyways no i havnt aha i gusse that would help :P ill go do that thank you very much (:
Using a Mac, and attached to camera, iMovie opens and loads video files to the program file base.
Go to Apple, and view video of iMovie sample. It will give you a basic view of process.
I just made my first one on this site.
ArcSoft software comes with the camera. I've Used it before, but not for this camera. Some computers need major crunch of processors to make this process easier. My MacPro is a beast, and it works hard at it.
For HD make sure you upload your video in 1280x720 pixels. When it's uploaded you'll have to wait several minutes for the HD video to be processed, until that's done you will get a "normal" version of the video.
I have used TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress for that. But for uploading to YouTube you don't have to convert them because YouTube accepts the MTS files that the TZ7 produces natively. Only if you want to edit the files in an editor that doesn't support AVCHD then you have to convert them to be able to edit them. Otherwise you can just upload the original files to YouTube directly.
This I have to see. I alway edit and convert to HD as Quicktime, then to iTunes to play, or QuickTime Pro stand alone where you can do quick edits if you want to quickly chop it smaller at any point.
hello I bought it recentlly and so far I'm really satisfied..
Concerning videos, It's not focusing what bothers me but instead sound of motor when zooming on/off. It can be heard very clear when taking some silent movies. How do you handle that? However I cannot hear that sound on your movie at all :) ! How did you achive it ??
every other place i've read about it says it's normal. perhaps there's another way of reducing it, say by zooming slowly, i dunno. seems i read somewhere of a way around it.
Is video quality any better in TZ7 then in TZ5? I have TZ5 and i usually record video on concerts. And TZ5 has a lot of problems with focus in videos. Sometimes you cant focus on the band and you have to zoom out and then zoom back in and so on. Also if you capture stage lights you will get some strange vertical stripes on the record wich is very annoying.
Where is the point in that? If you turn off focusing and zoom in or out then you would have out of focus picture. That would only only be good if you would turn off focusing and keep the same zoom the whole video.
I think the video quality has improved over the TZ5 because the TZ7 records in AVCHD format which is easier to the eyes and not as noisy as Motion JPEG. Also, they improved the autofocus a lot because the TZ7 has less focushunting then the TZ5. Even when it goes out of focus it will focus very fast again on the subject. Of course, the stereo mic on the TZ7 is a big improvement also. Unfortunately you still have the vertical stripes with bright light sources because of the small sensor.
I did a two year course at university in photography and full manual control had always been a must. What I overlooked was that in live photo shoots, as opposed to studio setups, point and shoot will usually get you your shot and make you popular, whereas when changing settings, manually, you might miss it. The frustrating disadvantage is you need to do work in Photoshop.
Buy both!
Reviews. Consistently the Canon has better colour, warm, slightly softer focus. Budget camcorders trump both.
What package did you use to edit and upload the videos to Youtube? The software that came with the camera (Photofun Studio) does not seem to let you join multiple vidoes into one file. Also, how do you allow the video to be viewed in HD on Youtube?
I never use the suppied software with cameras because in most cases it's crap. With this video I first converted the MTS files to high quality WMV (without loss of quality) and edited those files in Adobe Premiere CS3. I also uploaded the edited video to YouTube in WMV format.
I now use Adobe Premiere CS4 that can handle MTS files natively so no more converting. Also, you can upload MTS files directly to YouTube now, just upload them in HD (1280x720) and they also will be HD on YouTube.
Do you get MTS only when the camera is set to AVCHD?? I'm assuming the Motion JPEG mode isn't HD. From what I've uploaded. I'm trying to figure this all out before I leave to Europe in a few days...your help will be much appreciated.
Yes, you only get MTS files when you record in AVCHD mode. The Motion JPEG mode can also record in HD (different resolutions possible) only this takes up much more space then AVCHD and the sound is of less quality.
Yep it is. I first wanted to buy a Creative Vado HD for shooting HD video but I'm glad I went for the TZ7 instead. It wasn't that much more expensive as a Vado HD but has so much more quality and options, like expandable memory, auto-focus, zooming while taking video, stereo sound, etc. I also needed a new photocamera so this was the logical buy and well worth the money.
It takes 8GB for one hour of video in the AVCHD Lite format at the highest (17mbps) setting. You do the math for 5 minutes :)
It's not possible to pause video, but really, why would you want this? Having each shot saved as a separate file is far more easier to edit afterwards.
wow this is pretty amazing. I am trying to decide whether to get this one, or the canon sx200.The canon seems to have better spec.. yet the lumix is wayy more expensive.. why is this? is the lumix a great camera?
Well, the canon has the obnoxious flash problem since it pops up every time you turn it on. The canon image quality is not as good. The ZS3 is wider angle and has twice the resolution on its 3" screen plus the AVCHD video storage format. Yes, the ZS3 is better. If you just shoot pictures you can get the ZS1 for $150 less but it has 848x480 video recording instead of HD.
your so biased!I have now purchased the canon. AS i think its better...im a photography student&the Canon is for more advanced users with its manual modes&other features. The only benefits to the lumix are the clearer lcd screen and the zoom whilst videoing,it has less megapixels&no manual modes, wayy more expensive.& I think the canon is a more attractive camera. They are both great cameras...bt i think the canon is for more advance users, whereas this lumix is for more amateur photographers.
It's proven in several reviews where they tested both cameras that the image quality of the TZ7 is superior to that of the SX200 (thanks to the better Leica lens). I don't know about you but for me this is what counts in the end. You're right about having more manual controls on the SX200. The TZ7 is just a great point-and-shoot camera with an excellent Intelligent Auto mode. As you are a photography student you made the right choice choosing the SX200 for it's manual controls.
Just a question about the sound quality -- is there any improvement over the old TZ3? I still own that one and it's served me well in video mode, but I always considered the sound quality to be absolutely atrocious (even some Nokia phones record better sound on their videos!)
For example, how would the TZ7 fare at a rock concert in terms of sound? Or a conversation between 2 people in a quiet room? The TZ3 had horrendous hiss even in quiet surroundings. It was one of its biggest downfalls.
The sound quality of the stereo mic is great! It's a big improvement over the mono mic of the TZ3 (or any camera for that matter). Just take a look at the Pink videos that were shot with a TZ7 circulating on YouTube and Vimeo. There are more then enough videos here to hear what the sound quality is like but believe me, it's comparable with the sound quality of a camcorder which is very good of course.
I didn't film the birds neither did I zoom in at them. Read the description, it's there for a reason :) But by the looks of the video it is shot from hand. The OIS is doing it's job fine, just read any review of the camera. I also can confirm this because I had the camera in my possesion for a short time to test it. Look at the other videos that I made.
That's great news then as most of my video'ing consists of short clips for skateboarding compilations. So would never be doing a single continous 15min clip. Thankyou for your help.
You can continuously record up to 15 min per clip. Then you have to restart the recording again for another 15 min and so on. So if you have a 16GB SD card you can record till it's full (meaning you'll have 2 hours of video in the end using the highest quality setting).
I take back what I said before. This video does not "lag" at all. I waited until the video loaded completely in HD, played it and it looked fantastic. I am definitely going to get this camera.
The European TZ7 does have the 15 minute recording limit per clip (you can continuously record up to 15 minutes, after that you have to press the record button again). For most people this won't be a problem but I'm going to use this camera as a carcam as well and my trips are usually longer then 15 mintues :). That's why I'm going to import my TZ7 from the US or Japan where the cameras don't have this recording limit built in.
No idea, I must mention that there are limits on the video length even on non EU models. - You can only record HD for 8 and a half minutes, VGA for 22 minutes and QVGA for an hour. I think it's based on the file's maximum size.
Aside from that I have only good things to say about the camera, all pictures and videos I've taken have been absolutely fantastic.
I'm sorry to mention but that is total BS. If you capture in the AVCHD format you can capture until the card is full. Even though my camera has the 15 minute recording limit per clip it let's me record up to the full 15 minutes, not 8 and a half minutes. I don't know about the Motion JPEG format, maybe you're talking about that? Looking at the different resolutions you're talking about you must be since AVCHD only supports 1280x720 pixels in this case.
On the "motion JPEG" setting, there are limits as I described. It appears if you set the recording mode to AVCHD Lite you can record to card limit. I'm unaware if they are the same definition however, as they don't have a "HD" setting, only "SH" "H" and "L".
It appears I was mistaken, though I don't appreciate my opinion being described as "total BS".
I'm afraid that doesn't work, I flashed my European TZ7 with the American 1.1 firmware and the 15 minute restriction is still there. The videos are also still 50p instead of 60p in case you might be wondering.
I have the quicktime installed and still it wont show on the PC. I hook my camera to the PC and when i go to the PC to access the video files they cant be seen.
I just bought a TZ7 in Taiwan, but not the Taiwan's model, it was a model imported from Japan I've the limit of 15mins per footage but I think it was not a model for Japan market but for HK and some country in Middle East because in the available language I've just traditional chinese, english and 2 arabic languages, and it was sold with an outlet power cable for HK. That limitation is not really a problem for me, for less of the cost of a taiwanese TZ7 I've a TZ7 and a 16Gb Transcend SDHC card.
Hey, why doesn't move the HD video smooth ? something todo with 50 or 60 Hz diferences between Europe and Canada ? The boat moves jerkily, by fits and starts.
My computer is fast i7 965 nVidea graphics 285 card.
this is currently the best compact camera with video and zoom recording capabilities, but i am not impressed by the slight dull greyish colors of panasonic photos in general. Nikon and canon picture quality still the best in the market. Other than that this is the PERFECT point and shoot ZOOM camera.
Glad to see video improving in predominantly still cameras. Will hold off until I see some proven video from a retail unit; just can't judge by these early uploads. Looks too choppy here to make a decision.
Video being choppy can have two reasons: your computer may be too slow for playing YouTube HD videos or it is because of the YouTube player itself. The original files are very smooth.
Also since the TZ7 is already for sale in Japan since early March (and it has been just released in Germany) you can find enough videos on YouTube now that were taken with a retail TZ7. Have you also watched part 2 of this video, it's also shot with a retail Japanese TZ7.
You didn't read the description didn't you? First, video was shot with a pre-production model. If you look at other (Japanese) videos that were taken with a retail model you notice that most of the focussing problems are gone. Second, I did not shoot this. In the future, please read the descriptions of videos before asking questions, most of the times they contain useful information about the video you're watching.
I read the description. In it you said the video was PROBABLY done by a pre-production unit. So "probably" open the POSSIBILITY that it was indeed done with a retail unit.
So , the question still remain..... When you zoom in why did the camera go out of focus? hehehehehehehehe :-0
man this makes me want to sell my tz5 really bad, this one has 10 times better audio capture capabilities, the extra 3 megapixels and the 12x zoom vs the 10 isnt worth twice the price, but the difference in the audio capture does
I love this cam too..it's fun, cos in EU they put a kind of restriction to it which resulted in limited recording time(15 minutes!!)..it's probably hundreds of MB, but still, sometimes you may need more.
So buy it in US.
BTW, the clips are cool. Looking forward to summer to get TZ7:)
I'm also thinking of buying it from the US because of this recording restriction. I will also use the TZ7 as a carcam (watch my other videos) and it would be very annoying to push the record button again every 15 minutes!

Kerrav0n- The still pictures look great. I think much better than Cannon. Battery life is great when shooting still, but does burn a little quick while in AVCHD mode

pwrlifter69 2 years ago
Seriously thinking of getting either this over the Canon SX200. The ability to zoom in HD video recording, AVCHD and better sound is edging it for me, as well as an ultra-wide lens.
My only concerns are the rumoured poor battery life and poorer still image quality than the Canon. Are my concerns justified?
Yeah I recognize Amsterdam anywhere, my spiritual home, away from my real home of London (and Jamaica).

From reviews I've seen, the quality of stills sucks compared to similarly priced competitors--noisy. So, this cool video and zoom better be good.

Class 6 card is recommended for recording HD video
Mattsana 2 years ago
@Mattsana

Don't know if anyone makes a compact camera that can do HD video with a better aperture of say F2.8 at full wide angle.
rabidfuzzybunny 2 years ago
what should the settings be for the best HD video shots from this camera?
clitage 2 years ago
I usually shoot in the iA mode which gives me great results in most conditions, the camera will then pick the best settings for you on the fly when you're filming (or taking photo's).
Cade78 2 years ago
I got my TZ7 about a month ago and I love it, the optical image stabilization is really cool. Optical zoom is a bit slow in videos but it's not that bad, my only complaint is the videos are very dark, anyone else have this problem? In photo mode it's normal on the default exposure but when I record a video it looks like the exposure is set to -2, it kind of sucks for dark or low light indoor scenes.

Not only is the screen smaller on the ZS1/TZ6 (that also has a smaller resolution), the ZS1/TZ6 doesn't record video in HD like the ZS3/TZ7.

Hey Man..i got a lumix zs3 couple of days ago..and i got 16 GB memory card, and i was at a concert and recording in HD..but i dunno why...there was this msg that pops up n stops the recording..it was like " recording cancelled due to the limitation of speed of the memory card "..now its pretty obvious, the problem is in the memory card...is there a specific brand i should buy that will work fine with my camera and makes me record HD vidz wiz no problems ?..thx bro
leatherface1973 2 years ago
It has to do with the CLASS of the CArd. Make sure you are buying Class 6 ,NOT class 4 or 2. the write speed of the 6 is the only class that will capture HD Video.
kkaluger 2 years ago
its the memory card, if your ganna buy one buy a class 6 sdhc card those handles hd and speeds
Xplict911 2 years ago
Well, The one i have is class 6 and it is SDHC...and the brand name is Transcend....i really dont know why this happened, but does this depends on the motion speed of the objects or thats not necessary ?...
leatherface1973 2 years ago
I also use the Transcend 16GB class 6 SDHC memory card and mine is working like a charm. Just got back from a month long vacation to Indonesia and my TZ7 went along filming all the beauty of this country. It has nothing to do with the speed of moving objects why your card is not working well, my guess is that your memory card is defective. You sure you got a genuine Transcend card? On eBay they sell fakes that are indeed slower that the real Transcend cards.
Cade78 2 years ago
Well..i bought mine from Amazon, but i dunno if it is fake or not !!.. is there a way to find out if its fake or not ?
leatherface1973 2 years ago
Yep, check if it's a genuine Transcend card on the site of Transcend. Go to "Service Center" and choose "Product Verification". If it's genuine I would return it for a new one... if it's a counterfeit I would ask my money back and buy from another seller.

This is normal for the digital files of Avchd.

How can you get the avchd video on youtube? i don´t get hd i get hq
buduiza 2 years ago
For HD make sure you upload your video in 1280x720 pixels. When it's uploaded you'll have to wait several minutes for the HD video to be processed, until that's done you will get a "normal" version of the video.
Cade78 2 years ago
Do you know some good program to convert the videos to avi?
buduiza 2 years ago
I have used TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress for that. But for uploading to YouTube you don't have to convert them because YouTube accepts the MTS files that the TZ7 produces natively. Only if you want to edit the files in an editor that doesn't support AVCHD then you have to convert them to be able to edit them. Otherwise you can just upload the original files to YouTube directly.
Cade78 2 years ago
Oh my god thank you!
buduiza 2 years ago
wow, that sounds bazaar.
This I have to see. I alway edit and convert to HD as Quicktime, then to iTunes to play, or QuickTime Pro stand alone where you can do quick edits if you want to quickly chop it smaller at any point.

BADBOY64000 2 years ago
i don't know about the quality but on the TZ7 you can turn off focusing so it doesn't change when you zoom in and out.
davidkinsella 2 years ago
Where is the point in that? If you turn off focusing and zoom in or out then you would have out of focus picture. That would only only be good if you would turn off focusing and keep the same zoom the whole video.
BADBOY64000 2 years ago
No, it doesn't go out of focus when you zoom in and out, it's fixed focus, it's only useless if you want to shoot up close video as well as distance.
davidkinsella 2 years ago
I think the video quality has improved over the TZ5 because the TZ7 records in AVCHD format which is easier to the eyes and not as noisy as Motion JPEG. Also, they improved the autofocus a lot because the TZ7 has less focushunting then the TZ5. Even when it goes out of focus it will focus very fast again on the subject. Of course, the stereo mic on the TZ7 is a big improvement also. Unfortunately you still have the vertical stripes with bright light sources because of the small sensor.

The Canon I referred to being the again very desirable Canon PowerShot SX200 IS *
OnceAPunAThyme 2 years ago
I did a two year course at university in photography and full manual control had always been a must. What I overlooked was that in live photo shoots, as opposed to studio setups, point and shoot will usually get you your shot and make you popular, whereas when changing settings, manually, you might miss it. The frustrating disadvantage is you need to do work in Photoshop.
Buy both!
Reviews. Consistently the Canon has better colour, warm, slightly softer focus. Budget camcorders trump both.
OnceAPunAThyme 2 years ago
You're wrong, the TZ7/ZS3 records at 1280x720 pixels which is HD. Don't know where you got the 840x5xx from?
Cade78 2 years ago
He's probably thinking of the TZ3 (maybe he confused the TZ3 with the ZS3.) The maximum recording resolution on the TZ3 is 848 x 480.
I have the TZ5 which has the 1280x720 recording just like the TZ7 except the TZ7 has the option for recording H.264.

What package did you use to edit and upload the videos to Youtube? The software that came with the camera (Photofun Studio) does not seem to let you join multiple vidoes into one file. Also, how do you allow the video to be viewed in HD on Youtube?
reegsville 2 years ago
I never use the suppied software with cameras because in most cases it's crap. With this video I first converted the MTS files to high quality WMV (without loss of quality) and edited those files in Adobe Premiere CS3. I also uploaded the edited video to YouTube in WMV format.
I now use Adobe Premiere CS4 that can handle MTS files natively so no more converting. Also, you can upload MTS files directly to YouTube now, just upload them in HD (1280x720) and they also will be HD on YouTube.
Cade78 2 years ago
Do you get MTS only when the camera is set to AVCHD?? I'm assuming the Motion JPEG mode isn't HD. From what I've uploaded. I'm trying to figure this all out before I leave to Europe in a few days...your help will be much appreciated.
clitage 2 years ago
Yes, you only get MTS files when you record in AVCHD mode. The Motion JPEG mode can also record in HD (different resolutions possible) only this takes up much more space then AVCHD and the sound is of less quality.
Cade78 2 years ago
wow that camera is seriously good at video
joshjones927 2 years ago
Cade78 2 years ago

I have questions regarding videos. How many memory takes for instance 5minutes movie in AVCHD video format and stereo sound?
Is it posible to pause movie, if yes, how long can pause lasts until it switches off?
Thanks in advance for answers!
FrankieZG 2 years ago
It takes 8GB for one hour of video in the AVCHD Lite format at the highest (17mbps) setting. You do the math for 5 minutes :)
It's not possible to pause video, but really, why would you want this? Having each shot saved as a separate file is far more easier to edit afterwards.
Cade78 2 years ago
If 60mins recording time takes up 8GB as Cade78 states then the following calculations are true.
60mins = 8,192.00mb
10mins = 1,365.33mb
05mins = 682.65mb
01mins = 136.53mb

FrankieZG 2 years ago
wow this is pretty amazing. I am trying to decide whether to get this one, or the canon sx200.The canon seems to have better spec.. yet the lumix is wayy more expensive.. why is this? is the lumix a great camera?
Hen9207 2 years ago
Well, the canon has the obnoxious flash problem since it pops up every time you turn it on. The canon image quality is not as good. The ZS3 is wider angle and has twice the resolution on its 3" screen plus the AVCHD video storage format. Yes, the ZS3 is better. If you just shoot pictures you can get the ZS1 for $150 less but it has 848x480 video recording instead of HD.
2cpus4me 2 years ago
your so biased!I have now purchased the canon.
Hen9207 2 years ago

It was one of its biggest downfalls.
ecxpac 2 years ago
The sound quality of the stereo mic is great! It's a big improvement over the mono mic of the TZ3 (or any camera for that matter). Just take a look at the Pink videos that were shot with a TZ7 circulating on YouTube and Vimeo. There are more then enough videos here to hear what the sound quality is like but believe me, it's comparable with the sound quality of a camcorder which is very good of course.

Heisehui 2 years ago
I didn't film the birds neither did I zoom in at them. Read the description, it's there for a reason :) But by the looks of the video it is shot from hand. The OIS is doing it's job fine, just read any review of the camera. I also can confirm this because I had the camera in my possesion for a short time to test it. Look at the other videos that I made.

That's great news then as most of my video'ing consists of short clips for skateboarding compilations. So would never be doing a single continous 15min clip. Thankyou for your help.
rwd19t 2 years ago
When people say there is a 15min HD limit is that one single continous 15min limit or multiple short clips amounting to 15min?
rwd19t 2 years ago
You can continuously record up to 15 min per clip. Then you have to restart the recording again for another 15 min and so on. So if you have a 16GB SD card you can record till it's full (meaning you'll have 2 hours of video in the end using the highest quality setting).

I'm considdering buying this camera, I just have one question.
Is there an arbitrary time limit to video capture or is it to card capacity? I know the TZ5 was only able to record movies to a max of 15mins.
Ideally I want to be able to stick in a 16GB SDHC card and fill it up in one go.
Cheers.
LanyardB 2 years ago
The European TZ7 does have the 15 minute recording limit per clip (you can continuously record up to 15 minutes, after that you have to press the record button again). For most people this won't be a problem but I'm going to use this camera as a carcam as well and my trips are usually longer then 15 mintues :). That's why I'm going to import my TZ7 from the US or Japan where the cameras don't have this recording limit built in.
Cade78 2 years ago
Ah I see, thanks for the response. Any idea if this limit applies to hong kong as well? I may purchase mine from there.
LanyardB 2 years ago
No, the Hong Kong units (as well as every other unit in the world) don't have this limit, only the European ones (because of a stupid EU tax).
Cade78 2 years ago
If I do a firmware update with an american firmware, is the limit of 15 minutes canceled?
brazz43 2 years ago
No idea, I must mention that there are limits on the video length even on non EU models. - You can only record HD for 8 and a half minutes, VGA for 22 minutes and QVGA for an hour. I think it's based on the file's maximum size.
Aside from that I have only good things to say about the camera, all pictures and videos I've taken have been absolutely fantastic.
LanyardB 2 years ago
Hi, my video footage wont show on my PC. it has something to do with the extention name. does anyone know how to sort this out?
JaseGtown 2 years ago
The .MOV files are incompatable with many programs, they are, however, playable through "quicktime".
LanyardB 2 years ago
I'm sorry to mention but that is total BS. If you capture in the AVCHD format you can capture until the card is full. Even though my camera has the 15 minute recording limit per clip it let's me record up to the full 15 minutes, not 8 and a half minutes. I don't know about the Motion JPEG format, maybe you're talking about that? Looking at the different resolutions you're talking about you must be since AVCHD only supports 1280x720 pixels in this case.
Cade78 2 years ago
On the "motion JPEG" setting, there are limits as I described. It appears if you set the recording mode to AVCHD Lite you can record to card limit. I'm unaware if they are the same definition however, as they don't have a "HD" setting, only "SH" "H" and "L".
It appears I was mistaken, though I don't appreciate my opinion being described as "total BS".
LanyardB 2 years ago
I'm afraid that doesn't work, I flashed my European TZ7 with the American 1.1 firmware and the 15 minute restriction is still there. The videos are also still 50p instead of 60p in case you might be wondering.

Glad to see video improving in predominantly still cameras. Will hold off until I see some proven video from a retail unit; just can't judge by these early uploads. Looks too choppy here to make a decision.
unzarjones 2 years ago

The first two clips were recorded in the Netherlands (where I also live), the other two clips were recorded in Japan I believe.
