  • God I loved Cabaret Voltaire "Nag nag nag" and the 12" of "Sensoria" is aural sex: "do do do right always works..go to church" aaah memories, fantastic music:)

  • oh, my.. remembering when i got my 1st keyboard in 93 (was born in 81)... a CCE with 12 voices which i could learn to play my 1st chords... watching this now and Paul with his "Micro Preset" i just can think: So good I never underestimate my CCE. Wish i had a time machine... 80s = musical heaven period.

  • i have one of those bontempi "electric chord organs" sitting in my closet right now. It's pretty gnar.

  • Seminal 80s synthpop pioneers HEAVEN 17 are marking the 30th anniversary of their debut album, PENTHOUSE AND PAVEMENT, by releasing a 2 disc DVD set featuring a full live concert, filmed in Sheffield in March 2010, and the acclaimed BBC2 documentary charting the band's career. Plus the first 200 fans who pre-order the DVD set at the band's website will receive a copy signed by the band.

  • Hey! What about 'Who's Next?' Proof that Townshend was waaaaaay ahead of his time.....

  • Suicide?

  • @cromlek Suicide was NY.. still sweet though!

  • Rational Youth was a Canadian band, but you should definitely check out Coboloid Race from them

  • @TrainmasterCurt

Rational Youth were fantastic and should've been bigger definitely. "Coboloid Race" is one of my favourite synth tunes ever. Love its energetic cold minimal synth atmosphere a lot. Thanx a lot for the mention, TrainmasterCurt matey! Thumbs up!

  • what about the Screamers?

  • i know they were American, but no mention of Suicide's influence? yet? still watching...

  • @ldybby

On one side (British) you had Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle whereas on the other (American) you had Suicide and Chrome.

  • @TheMercyBeat Chrome is better than Suicide

  • @ldybby They were an influence for sure but this is calld "Synth Britania"

  • @TheFashionbugs i guess my point is/was, nothing happens in a bubble. giving a mention to international influences wouldn't necessarily be breaking with the theme here.

  • finally someone mentioned Throbbing Gristle!! and they BUILT THEIR OWN SYNTHS!

  • Thanks soo much for putting this up, loved it when I saw it on t.v so great to find it here.......but why won't this part (3) finish, tried twice now but it gives up when I can tantalisingly hear Atmosphere!!!

  • Cabaret Voltaire, OMD, and Human League were amonth the few that led the way in electronic music, however Cabaret was way ahead ... right up there with Kraftwerk.

  • What is the name of the song that plays in 2:05?

  • It is OMD's "Messages" from 1980!

Check it on their selftitled debut from the same year and three 'best of' compilations they've released officially so far. ;-)

  • LOVE Metamatic!

  • DAMN!!! Does anyone know the name of the song/artist starting at 0:25 seconds?? I've been looking for that for YEARS!

  • Cabaret Voltaire - Nag Nag Nag

  • Hey Thanks!!

  • @antigen4

    your welcome!

  • Wow, Sheffield is just like Pittsburgh, only with good music!

  • Yeah, but the trade-off is that PIttsburgh has a great football team!! LOL

  • lol

  • I'm having real problems with choppiness. The videos will play for about 10-15 seconds then stop and that little circle comes on the screen and then it'll play for another 10-15 seconds and so on... To watch a 3 minute video takes 10 minutes. Geez

  • dude sounds like youve either got a real slow connection or youve been smashed by spyware

  • Mine just stops at 8:06... the whole video is buffered, plus I'm on a mac so it's unlikely to be spyware.

  • @stephenp1968 You have to let it load before watching. Pause it when it's at the beginning of the video, go away get a cup of coffee and come back and watch the loaded video.

  • 03:55 from omd , mmm, unfortunately yes i can believe....sorry for another comment , the last i promise, though my fingers itch, any excuse to stop writing what i'm meant to be writing

  • and human league, i know they did some classic pop but sometimes in amongst all the commercial elements you here something special, a chord rogression married just so with the right patch or what ever they call it on a synth, if you are a human league officionado can you recommend some of their more obscure work, especially instrumentals, unsure of the song title but its got the chorus, "this is the sound..." thats all i know of song, what is it, thats kind of thing i'm after to listen to, plz?

  • disagree if you like with me, but i do not see OMD as pioneers or an important entity in the whole synth pop evolution, maybe Depeche Mode or similar wernt prepared to do the documentary, only OMD wanted to partake in it so shows makers bigged OMD up. if you dont agree just go watch their awful poppy music videos. also the lead singer dances like a dad at a wedding and for that alone i can not give them the "i'm not worthy"bit, but they did get off arse and do music & for that , well done fellas

  • An you think David Gahan was a cool dancer then?

  • @bryngOneOn Yeah. There is a bit of dad dancing going on there.

  • this series is chronological , so each town and time is featured. OMD is Sheff.

  • Tsk, tsk.

    OMD are from Liverpool.

    Other than that:

Sheffield (Cabaret Voltaire, The Human League, Heaven 17)

    Manchester (Joy Division, New Order)

    Leeds (Soft Cell)

London (Throbbing Gristle, Ultravox, Visage, Gary Numan, Pet Shop Boys)

    Basildon (Depeche Mode, Yazoo)

    +

    Dusseldorf (Kraftwerk).

  • Stopped playing in Firefox but worked fine in Chrome.

  • dammit you need 2 get it sorted

  • no problem playing here either..cool doc check the kraut one too by the bbeeebb

  • why is all the camera work so sketchy?

  • grateful as I am it stuck on 8.05 for me too - menyc fark off you troll

  • @jimmynitcher same :( i think hes gonna say more than one note lol

  • played fine for me.

  • Definately faulty video playback. Having just tested it through Safari it sticks at the exact same spot and refuses to play any further. Trying to click further on the timeline the video just stops completely

  • is there a problem on playback with this, it gets stuck at 8.05 and wont go any further?

  • Just click on the timeline a few seconds on, seemed to work for me.

  • no, it doesnt play beyond 8.05. at all.

and menyc, i was just trying to be helpful by reporting a fault.

  • It seems to be your problem. But your bigger issue is being ungrateful. Entitlement is a disease.

  • Cool documentary , especially for Numan but I love the Cabs as well

  • grate documentary ... nany thnx to BBC ... and the uploader
