  • This is the first useful ExpertVillage video I've seen.

  • The sax samuraii

  • Yeah What Mouthpiece is that and what brand of reeds do u prefer

  • I like it...nice sound, good aproach

  • One of the few experts from expert village that can actually play! Some great phrasing there! Powerful sound and clean techniques!

  • wow your so good i wish i could sound like that!!!! this video is really going to help me, Thank you so much!!

  • Why do expertvillage videos always talk too much??

  • Excuse me, but what WAS that melody, it sounds familiar - really familiar. Gorgeous longing sort of melody.

  • @fr3lonbrun It's "misty"

  • @fr3lonbrun The first little bit was Misty I think, but I'm not sure what the second bit was.

  • @crazypianolady It's still misty, he's just playing the changes.

  • I think his saxophones are red...

  • Good stuff.

  • ok i play the tenor but when i play a high d is sounds all flat and rubbish does any one know what could be wrong?

  • @CourtneyDanielle94 check ur saxophone get it serviced there could be a leak just like what happened to mine, also check ur mouth peice if its positioned properly

  • @CourtneyDanielle94 Depends on the horn you have. Student horns will usually have cruddy sound in the higher register because the palm keys are sort of half-assed. They aren't made to a specific measurement for great intonation like professional horns.

  • @evergreach2346 I have to disagree. My Yamaha 23 never had a cruddy sound in the high register, it was always in well in tune. In fact, when I got the unlaq custom Z, I had more problems with my upper register going sharp. I had to do a lot of adjustment to my embouchure. Perhaps, it's his embouchure that is the problem.

  • You can play a total of 5-6 notes and solo hella good then playing 12-13 notes and playing crappy

  • who have u played with beside ur bff mitch kaplin

  • this guy knows nothing about playing the sax

  • like the sound a lot! could you say what kind of mouthpiece that is?

  • @NicChambers93 its a Dukoff

  • @boxing1000

i have a dukoff and there really good id recomend them

  • could u teach the notes 4 the jazz improvization and i could go from their because i play the tenor saxophone.

  • Sax is the easiest instrument Ive ever played. Skilled musicians play bassoon, oboe, and even clarinet

  • @relyt799 your an idiot.

  • @332546 and you are an idiot that can't read well.

  • @relyt799 how? based on my comments what evidence do you have that i cant read well?

  • relyt799 Only someone who doesn't play ANY instruments can say something like that.

  • Last time I checked, this is slightly more than "not playing any instruments":

-6 years Tenor Saxophone (first chair in school's jazz band ranked 2nd in state)

-4 years Clarinet (2 years in marching band)( 2 years recreationally)

    -4 years Bassoon(7-10grade)

    -6 years Guitar

    -2 years Oboe(11-12grade)

    -2 years Vibes and marimba

    -3 years piano

-5 years playing a drum set

    Now for my defense:

  • Reasons the Saxophone is an easy instrument to play:

-easy fingering as compared to a bassoon or a clarinet. (anyone that can sightread music and have 10 minutes with fingering chart can play almost instantaneously.

    - range of pitch (no explanation needed)

    - embouchure (also anyone who plays will agree that the embouchure needed to play a tenor sax is much easier to develop as compared to an oboe, bassoon, are clarinet.

I am not saying it is a bad instrument. Learn to read folks.

  • @relyt799

dude, clarinet fingerings and sax fingerings are REALLY close together.....and instrument difficulty ranges from person to person.... to me,clarinet is easy once you get the embouchure down, i played clarinet before and bassoon to ME is easy once you get the fingerings down.....

  • I actually find embouchure easier on clarinet. I don't have much experience with it other than messin around with my friend's clarinet once and my sound was easily better than his and most of the clarinet players' so I don't think saxophone is easiest to play by any means. I think dynamics are easier on saxophone thought. I wouldn't know about other instruments though. I hear that double reeds are the hardest to learn.

  • Given your experience, its puzzling to me that you note range of pitch as an 'easy' aspect of the horn. I assume you mean just the natural range, and you're not really referring to altissimo? You are right though, the sax is easy to pick up on a basic level compared to other winds, but it will take a lifetime to master, especially if you are concerned about tone production and good technique.

  • You're talking about instruments like they are cars or some sort of property.

And yes, any idiot could pick up an instrument and start playing the notes in front of them. But what almost nobody can do nowadays is actually put the spiritual component in playing the music.

Just because you've spent your whole life reading from a sheet of paper and doing what you're told doesn't mean you are a musician. Playing an instrument means that you have to use it's sound to create some sort of emotion.

  • nah, if you're a classical musician, then chances are that all you do is play from sheet music. So you can still be a musician if you do that.

  • Classical musicians such as Bach used improv alot.

  • Yeah, but somewhere along the ways, classical musicians got this nonsense in their heads that you should ONLY play what's written and only in the exact what that the original performer/writer would have wanted it done.

  • Mmm Yeah haha.

  • You got the point!

  • Music is a thought, mothing more, nothing less. It's conveyed in a language in such a form that others can understand. Sheet music is a means of merely recording what you "said". Improvisation and reading from sheet is like the difference of public speaking with and without a script. I hope that no one was saying that I'm not a musician. In an orchestra setting you will mostly be reading whereas at my old schools jazz band, I was mostly improvising.

  • I don't want to argue about what makes someone a musician because honestly, any thing that can clap is a musician. the way I see it, with music being but a thought, is that a musician needs not to even play an instrument. (Instrumentalists do however).. Everyone is a musician just not everyone can contribute to the musical world because they haven't taken the time to study their language.

  • Interesting observation, but you obviously can't see what I'm talking about...

I don't know you, I've never heard or seen you play, so I'm not gonna argue anymore...

Now I'm gonna turn off this virtual world and go record some music.

  • Wow @relyt799: you are a stupid, music is a natural wonder, not a thought.....you obviously don't know what you're talking about

  • @BananaPriest Me? Surely you are mistaken, while on the subject, I am going to take a leap and say that YOU probably don't automatic acceptance to Berklee? Just saying.:)

  • @relyt799 hmmm I think you're half right. Music is a universal language that, yes anyone can understand. However, with improvisation you can have the music in front of your, and be improvising making variations off the melody that you're reading. Esp. with a tune that has a strong melody, such as "Autumn Leaves". Or you can have a Modal piece like "So What" have to come up with your own melody. I really don't believe it matters if you have the music in front of you or not. tho, i get the jest.

  • i can't believe people are on here arguing over bari saxes in marching bands. i mean really...does that matter?

  • this is my first day on grade 7 sax so to me this guy is kinda good

  • Agreed..

I am a professional who lives in NYC. He is pretty good. Maybe not the best. BUUUUUUTTTT........ He knows his stuff. Probs not the best teacher. Having said that it is mad that people try to learn the sax over u tube.. people who do will never be good. You need to have a proper teacher in my opinion.

  • @vandoren59 yeahh... i taught myself using a finger chart.. im 1st chair out of five. and ive been playing for 2 1/2 - 3months. seriosuly better off with just a finger chart rather than all this expert village crap. half the people dont even know their stuff... this guy is okay and has pretty good tone for such a crappy mic though

  • I played through the 6th grade it's kinda hard dont say You can out play me just saying but improv is easy if you put time into it

  • I absolutely love the tone you emit. I play on a S80 Selmer mouthpiece, however the horn I have is less than a beginner (Kolhler). Keep the posts coming. . .do you have any scale exercises to help me flow when improvising?

  • all the comments I read on the 1st page have nuthing to do with Jazz whats up wit dat. maybe we should talk about rap and moon walking. Jazz people gotta feel it learn it be it all it takes is 1000s of hrs and then you might get a gig

  • how much would a saxo for a beginer cost?

    thank you

  • new student models are round 300 to 500 i believe.

  • thaks my friend!

I actualy got a alto saxo just a few days ago...

    All the best!

  • Are You For Real???

  • are you stupid?

  • people are pretty confused in these days...

just let go everything and you'll see that...

  • he gets a great sound out of that sax

  • Wow!

  • yea ppl bitch too much bout the stupidest shit, who cares bout the strap n wat they think of it, ill hook a sax to some damn overalls n see wat tehy think

  • SAX BRA!

But i couldn't give a shit. The man knows exactly what he's talking about, and he's a great player to boot.

  • well actually most jazz musicians did marching band in high school dude.

  • You guys have no idea what you're talking about, when you get to a certain level and practice as much as he probably does your neck will start aching bad! Oh and by the way Barri is a bad ass man's instrument! Now go and practice kiddies

  • I agree. Those last comments about the harness just show how stupid kids are nowadays. I'd like to see them practice 8 hours a day everyday with a regular strap - especially if they are as skinny as this guy is. But why would they practice so much anyway in their world of instant gratification? We should hang them by their strap.

  • NICE VIDEO

    I LEARNED SOMETHING COOL

  • haha that strap....haaa...tenors dont even weigh that much...i marched a whole show without using my neck strap....now i can see using it on a barry....nice vid though i have learned something new

  • What tenor sax you got? I use a Selmer 54 Paris model Bb series II Tenor Saxophone and it's heavy, i have to use a neckstrap, but i only use the normal one.

  • LOL! Play a C# (non - overtone) without a next strap... I love to see that

  • nice tone

  • i learned more in just this one video than in all of that alto fags videos combined

be has the right idea of improv

and hes an awesome player(nice altissimo) but why is he wearing a sax bra with a tenor

inless you have back problems done wear a bra

i play my beri with a tenor strap and im inebut if you have to march a beri wear the bra(as long as its leopard print)

  • who marches with a bari???...pleez join a traditional style band...

  • marching bari sax is gay(so is bass clarinet)

i was saying that this fag is a bitch cause he is using a neck strap that should only be used for a bari sax (cause for jazz and shit you stand with the bari and it a heavy sax tenor isn't

  • who marches bari? tht would be everyone tht is worth anything. only garbage bands dont march them.

  • lol...you must dont listen to traditional style marching bands?...lol...HBCUmarching bands and GREat college maching bands dont include BARI SAX

  • umm, college bands? those are pathetic, for actually marching band, i.e. high school BOA bands, all of them will have baritone saxes

  • yeah..loook it up...dekalb county GA,..has the best marching bands across the country it host several battle of the bands compititions and jamborees...bari sax is a concert instrument not meant for traditional style marching......look it up..ignorant

  • Far from ignorant, Dekalb has no one, Real schools, Avon, L.D. Bell, Carmel, Broken Arrow, and the like, use the bari. So therefore, you my friend, are the ignorant one.

  • ok are these corp style bands or traditional cuz traditional bands dont use bari.....in the movie drumline was there a bari anywhere in sight.."not at all"...marine core bands dont even use bari...so please kno your history...it is a concert instrument not used for marching

  • i actually do know my history, and traditional style bands dont even use three valve bugles or trumpets, yet somehow those instruments are staples of the marching field. care to explain that one?

  • UM YES..traditional style bands do use 3 valve instruments as well as trumpets..they are one of largest sections in any traditional style band.....BARI sax is a new era instrument that is not included much like a contra bass clarinett,,,,please dude u r completely lost at wat a band is and to say college bands are nuthin compared to high school.u r a complete waste

  • wrong, three vavle instruments were NOT allowed until 1983 up until then only single valve rotary bugles were allowed. and a complete waste? clearly you have no idea who i am. i have a DCI championship with Phantom Regiment, so think i may have SOME idea as to what i am talking about.

  • lawl. DCI is amazing. What year were you a champ? 96 or last year?

  • no offense but Hollywood lies...in BOA, theres a bari in just about every band...when u do march with a bari, u have to use a harness...yes it is mostly concert band instrument but it can be used in marching bands...

  • Well considering i've marched bari, I know for a fact you don't have to use a harness, because if you're holding the horn the RIGHT way, a neck strap is enough.

  • ok...i see how u could do that without much damage in the long run but u don't want all the weight on ur neck while ur marching all the time...a harness is def recomended...

  • I agree I am going to march with it next year!

  • super tone. dave your a great player ,fab,,

  • yay free lessons

  • You're an asshat. You probably don't even play.
