Well, most of them are recruited to audition from Second City, the Groundlings, or Upright Citizens Brigade. Others get called in from their standup. What you're seeing is actually a sort of final callback. From what I have read/heard, Lorne Michaels and other producers will come to see people several times before calling them in for an audition. A few auditions later, a handful of people audition at the studio, so at this point he's already been pre-screened, screened, and called back.
People, it's an audition. He's showing potential for future material. And I must say, this part is excellent. From physical comedy all the way through spot-on impersonations. His Norm is decent enough to fill in for his excellent drunk.
Obviously, the SNL crew liked it. He got the part and became a memorable regular. He's also a stand-up legend.
Great stand-up comic, but not a good fit for SNL - it's a different style of comedy
