  • how can you dislike? hater

  • shivers down my spine

  • I fucking love this song.

  • would be more perfect if was only he singing. :)

  • You all need to check out fiction's cover of this tune. Hands down the best cover.

  • This man has a beautiful, beautiful soul

  • Do you have any more videos from this show?

  • So opinions no arguing....does anyone agree with me that his band now ruins his old songs live? I saw them a few months ago and it just ruined boy with a coin. I understand experimenting is his thing right now with the new cd but seriously i saw this song on youtube like boy with a coin it had horns and drums...im sorry but i just feel like that completely ruins the old songs that are so much better man with his guitar sound.

  • @soma27 I actually do agree. I feel like Sam sometimes thinks he needs to keep things fresh and more professional by adding a full band. But I like my Iron and Wine with just Sam Beam and an acoustic guitar.

  • @soma27 BWIATC is not one of his 'old' songs. If you listen to it closely it has many of the elements that would become part of his later sound, including the greater amount of instrumentation and so on.

Iron and Wine still plays a lot of his newer material in the stripped-down style he was more known for originally at his smaller shows.

  • @soma27 thats how i felt at first when i saw them. but i dunno, i've heard the album versions so many times, it just seems cool to rewrite everything. it was like the first time i'd ever heard them. it still gave me chills either way.

  • I also feel this is a song from the perspective of an infant toward his or her mother. It is absolutely stunning!

  • Chills. so beautiful.

  • Like a poem

  • One person doesn't have musical taste.

  • @TheGirlfromtheboro more like 1 person doesn't like the taste of breast milk.

  • awesome

  • I listened to this song ten times last night. Each time, each line, I got shivers. I felt like I'd burst into tears at any moment.

  • Such a pure, beautiful song. I could listen to this for the rest of my life

On another note, his beard is so gnarly!

  • Such a beautiful song.

I'm guessing this song is written about a mother, from a child's perspective. Beautiful.

  • Wow...great...i feel without the body...

  • like this song!!

  • So some may Lambaste me for this comparison, but short haired Sam Beem and Bearded Neil Fallon from Clutch have a striking resemblance.

  • When Ryan from oc says GOODBYE to Marissa, Seth and Summer on first season. So sad!

  • tell that bitch to shut up, she's wrecking the song

  • @mattsanejorgen

    Go fuck yourself asshole.

  • @e4hookah Best comment ever. =P

  • @pseudogenesis Thank's. People like pretzelzetzel and mattsanejorgen make me sick. I also like your take on the mothers / son comment. This song always reminds me of passion and love between lovers we know and have known. Not our mothers. pretzelzetzel and mattsane are probably loveless and defiantly single lonely people.

  • @e4hookah No problem man. =P Although, what did pretze...pretzeletz... whatever his name do?

  • @e4hookah

Actually, he said in an interview way back that this song was written about his mother.

Obviously music is for the listener to interpret, but if you read the lyrics, it's definitely about a mother.

  • @SeaTeaBee

I reckon your probably right. However, I think of it as a love song between lovers. I've heard the story it was about his mother also. I choose to just love the song for what it is; beautiful for what it is, and yes; we all interpret it differently. Still though... most beautiful song ever.

  • @mattsanejorgen she's off pitch a lot, eh? she just can't seem to stay on tune when she's out of the studio. i can't imagine she's doing it on purpose, either. notes that don't exist don't sound very good tossed into an otherwise lovely song.

  • @pretzelzetzel

I'm fairy certain her pitch is intended to be a half step up from his - can't say I agree with the mis-pitch here, but thats just imo.

  • david foster wallace on banjo

  • fucking amazing. favorite artist, hands down.

  • @Fozmovy

Isn't everything a rip off in one way or another. Take your self for instance. Your a rip off of a real prick.

  • @e4hookah *high-five*

  • This song is so beautiful. My all time favorite song.

The song is about him making love to his wife. Not anything to do with his mother.

  • Thats the dumbest thing ive ever heard.

  • Did this banjo player lay the original banjo track on the original ep?

  • no...the first two albums were done on a 4 track, where sam beam played everything.

  • I'm sorry, but this is the most sad song I have ever heard. I love it........

  • @e4hookah hmmm... strange how different people can see a song. this song has extremely good and happy energy... its all about love and making love and being with the one you really want to be with it could turn my shittiest day, my best.... will agree on the loving it part though... good stuff.

  • have you ever fought or been apart from the one you love.

if so, try some beer and whiskey and listen to this song.

    signed,

the blues man ( aka ) love sad songs and this is a sad song. however, i see the positivity in it to.

Ever had the blues? Sam Beam is a blues man my friend, and let there be no mistake about that issue...

  • This version is the best. The banjo takes my pain away.

  • man....i hadn't seen it...i think you're right

  • i...don't really think so, not in the context of the rest of the song...

i think it's about the narrator making love to his wife after they've had children together - that time when she's ripe, fertile, probably still lactating and breastfeeding. (i have a hard time believing this one doesn't lean heavily on the side of autobiographical.)

  • @xtina1982 im almost positive i read somewhere in an interview of his that this song is about his mother.

  • hmmm...interesting. i'll see if i can dig it up. i could be wrong. :)

  • I fell ... special

  • I have known this song for years and it always touches me in that same spot I

  • What a beautiful, brilliantly written song.

  • This song is what really got me into this band. I highly suggest getting the Sea and The Rhythm EP on vinyl.

  • yea i cried..*hangs head* beautiful song

  • I can listen to you forever.

  • I've always loved this song... and this is an amazing recording. thanks for sharing.

  • He's an amazing Songwriter who puts a lot of feelings an emotions in his songs

    just wonderful :)

  • Are you in a good mood right now?

    Use the thumbs up/down :)

  • This earth is full of beautiful things.

And this song reminds me of them.

  • kind of wish it was just sam singing.

  • second that. if i can ever hear this solo acoustic, i will consider my life complete.

  • If Sam Beam uses a capo, I can too, hahaha..

Such a beautiful song. He's really great.

  • what a gift.....he's so beautiful

  • i heard this song in my bellydance class and i fell in love with it! i knew it was iron and wine because sam's voice is so distinct and beautiful...i absolutely LOVE this song, this might be the song i dance to in my wedding <3

  • belly dance class?

  • Comment removed

  • If it was really in her bellydance class, i think it was a turkish house remix of it then.

  • So lovely

  • the essence of my soul leaves body and gets carried away by this tune. i feel lie better person full of peace, love, and tranquility. this is the 749th time i have heard song on youtube in a row. I just can't get enough. i feel like im am in heaven. Thank u sam beam for introducing me to GOD! my heart and soul have been reborn and i can now die.

    regards paul

  • regardspaul, you took the words out of my mouth. sam beam has a strange ability. this song, the trapeze swinger, and a few others make me feel that way.

  • i found the lyrics to the song before i'd ever heard the song, and had to go take a walk to compose myself. it's...so tender and so sincere and so full of love, it just makes me ache.

whoever inspired this is an extremely lucky woman.

  • @xtina1982 this song is about his mother

  • @precambria I seriously doubt that. That would make it incestuous. =P

  • a masterpiece...

    such beauty on this earth...

  • I just can't believe how beautiful this is.

  • sheer beauty

  • what's there to say when it's all been said?

    thank you for this.

  • So beautiful. Absolutely amazing! What a priviledge to see.

  • this is one of the most beautiful songs by Sam Beam, and this video just encompasses the tenderness of the song. Thank you! this is so killer!

  • I can't get enough of this video... reminds me of seeing him back in the 'old days' when it was just him and his guitar....

    he's amazing

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written!

Thank you for posting this gem! wow. Sam is a blessing to our generation...

  • one of my favorite clips on youtube. Brilliant song!

  • I draw so much inspiration from this man.

Thank you, Sam Beam. Thank you.

  • this is a really, really nice live recording.

  • i wish i could grow a beard. that would be rad.

  • No one can grow a beard as majestic and magical as a Sam Beam full potential mane.

  • zum verlieben schön
